LOS ANGELES (CNS) - The Westfield Century City mall was evacuated Friday as police, firefighters and a bomb squad responded to a report of a manwith a gun and a fire inside a bookstore.Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to the facility in the 10000 block of Santa Monica Boulevard at about 12:45 p.m., according to department spokesman Sgt. Barry Montgomery.When they arrived, people were streaming from the mall and they set about trying to locate the suspect, Montgomery said.A security guard informed officers he hadn't heard any gunshots or located any victims, according to the sergeant.``While proceeding with their search, officers were directed to a suspicious package located inside the Amazon store,'' he said. ``In an abundance of caution (an) LAPD bomb squad and (the) Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene.''At about 2 p.m., smoke was seen coming from the roof of the Amazon store. Fire sprinklers were activated inside the store, according to news reports.No injuries or shots fired had been reported as of 3 p.m., police said. People in parts of the mall were evacuated, but those in other areas of the large facility were advised to shelter in place while officers conducted a search, LAPD Officer Tony Im said.Paul Almond, a Century City attorney, told City News Service he was having lunch at Toscanova in the mall when the restaurant manager said police had ordered him to evacuate the restaurant. (CNS) - Long Beach Mayor Robert Garcia announced Monday that his stepfather died due to complications from COVID-19, one day after the family held a memorial service for the mayor's mother."We are incredibly saddened to share that my stepfather, Greg O'Donnell, has passed away due to complications from COVID-19," Garcia said in a statement. "It's a heartbreaking loss for our entire family, especially for my brother Jake."O'Donnell, who died Sunday at 58, "was a kind and good-hearted man, an amazing father and grandfather, and the best husband our mom could have ever hoped for. He worked hard for his family and started his own successful small business as a contractor with his brothers," Garcia said.Garcia's mother, Gaby O'Donnell, a longtime health care worker, died late last month due to complications from the coronavirus at the age of 61. LONDON (AP) — Britain, the United States and Canada are accusing Russia of trying to steal information from researchers seeking a COVID-19 vaccine.The three nations alleged Thursday that hacking group APT29, also known as Cozy Bear and believed to be part of the Russian intelligence service, is attacking academic and pharmaceutical coronavirus research institutions involved in vaccine development.They say the persistent and ongoing attacks are seen as an effort to steal intellectual property, rather than to disrupt research.Britain’s National Cybersecurity Centre made the announcement, coordinated with authorities in the U.S. and Canada.The NCSC says APT29 uses a variety of tools and techniques to predominantly target governmental, diplomatic, think-tank, healthcare and energy targets for intelligence gain.“Throughout 2020, APT29 has targeted various organizations involved in COVID-19 vaccine development in Canada, the United States and the United Kingdom, highly likely with the intention of stealing information and intellectual property relating to the development and testing of COVID-19 vaccines,” wrote the NCSC.It’s also unclear whether Russian President Vladimir Putin knew about the vaccine hacking, but officials believe such intelligence would be highly prized. 1294
