(KGTV) - President Trump addressed questions Tuesday about a possible closure of the U.S.-Mexico border, saying “I’m totally prepared to do it.” Speaking at a White House news conference, Trump called on Congress to make a deal and the Mexican government to stop immigrants from entering Mexico. Trump suggested Mexico had stepped up its efforts to keep Central American migrants from moving north in the past two days. The president also demanded change in what he described as "the worst, dumbest immigration system in the world."“We need to get rid of chain migration, we need to get rid of catch and release, and visa lottery, and we have to do something about asylum, and to be honest with you, we have to get rid of judges,” said Trump. Closing the border would have a severe impact to the U.S. economy, especially in border cities like San Diego. The flow of goods, including avocados and cars, would be disrupted, along with manufacturing supply lines. The Council of Economic Advisers was conducting studies on the potential impact of a border closure and "working with the president to give him those options," said White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders. WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. officials estimate that 20 million Americans have been infected with the coronavirus since it first arrived in the United States, with millions never knowing they had it.Thursday's estimate is roughly 10 times the 2.3 million cases that have been confirmed in the U.S.“Our best estimate right now is that for every case that we’ve reported, there were actually 10 other infections,” said the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Robert Redfield, during a phone briefing with reporters Thursday. Redfield said that estimate comes from analyzing blood samples from across the country for the presence of antibodies to the virus.Twenty million infections means that only about 6% of the nation’s 331 million people have had the virus, leaving the vast majority of the population still susceptible.“This is still serious,” Redfield said. “But I’m asking people to recognize that we’re in a different situation today than we were in March or April,” with more cases today in younger people who are not as likely to develop serious illness or die from infection, he said.The news comes as the Trump administration works to tamp down nationwide concern about the COVID-19 pandemic at a time when about a dozen states are seeing worrisome increases in cases.Also on Thursday, the CDC announced that it was broadening its list of people who are at a higher risk of getting seriously ill from the coronavirus. WASHINGTON, D.C. — A home test for COVID-19 will soon be on U.S. store shelves.The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday issued an emergency use authorization for the first kit that consumers can buy without a prescription to test themselves entirely at home.Regulators granted use for a similar home test last month, but it requires a doctor’s prescription.The new test kit from Australian company Ellume allows users to swab themselves and get the results at home in about 20 minutes.The test detects fragments of proteins of the coronavirus from a nasal swab sample from anyone 2 years old and up. It connect to a digital app to help users interpret the results.Similar to other antigen tests, the FDA says a small percentage of positive and negative results from this test may be false. Therefore, for patients without symptoms, positive results should be treated as presumptively positive until confirmed by another test as soon as possible.Individuals with positive results should self-isolate and seek additional care from their health care provider.
