LAS VEGAS, the United States, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- One of the most revolutionary changes for consumers that may come out of this year's International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will not be the electronic devices themselves, but the way they are charged.Instead of using traditional cords to power mobile phones, kitchen appliances, and even vehicles, exhibits showcasing wireless power technologies offer a glimpse into the future of how individuals can charge their devices without a plug or cord.Fulton Innovation, who develops and licenses its eCoupled intelligent wireless technology, demonstrated how the technology could be applied across a variety of usage cases at home and at work.At CES, the company announced that it is releasing its next generation wireless power solutions that incorporate near-field resonant magnetic induction, allowing devices to charge without actually touching a charging surface.Additionally, it will allow power to transfer through metal surfaces, a property which had previously been unsafe to use as a surface conductor for power.While the products with integrated eCoupled capabilities currently in the marketplace focus predominantly on smartphone charging surfaces, in part due to the low-power demands of these devices, the company said there will be more applications using this technology expected to come to market in the near future.A large part of the added production scale on the consumer level is due to the standardization of the industry.In 2010, the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced the finalization of the "Qi" standard, enabling interoperability for wireless charging between a power-providing device and electronics receiving power.Currently, the Qi standard is only applicable for the wireless transmission of power up to five watts, and the WPC is undertaking steps to expand this standard to deliver up to 120 watts of power.This standardization enables technology designers like Fulton Innovations to create underlying IP designs and technologies that work across a number of OEMs.The WPC currently has over 100 member companies, including Fulton Innovation, Nokia, Samsung, Haier, and Huawei Technologies.Fulton Innovation also expects to add its eCoupled technology to cars, giving automobile manufacturers the ability to install integrated charging platforms for mobile devices without additional wires or cords.Chinese auto makers Geely, Chery, Chang'an, and Dongfeng were the first to showcase cars at a major auto show featuring Qi standard charging stations during the April 2011 Shanghai Auto Show.The WPC estimates that there will be approximately five auto manufacturers who will release cars with Qi-enabled charging capabilities either late this year or early next year.

HONG KONG, Oct. 13 (Xinhua) -- Computer and electronic device maker Lenovo, listed in both Hong Kong and New York, has replaced Dell to become the world's second largest personal computer company, Lenovo said Thursday.Lenovo made the remarks in a statement, citing figures released by International Data Corporation (IDC), a global provider of business intelligence for the consumer technology market.Following five quarters as the fastest-growing PC maker among the world's top vendors, the preliminary IDC data reported that Lenovo has achieved record market share of around 13.7 percent and record quarterly shipment volume of some 12.6 million units.Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said his company had surpassed two competitors to capture the No. 2 spot in worldwide PCs in just two quarters and it was the highest rank that Lenovo has achieved in worldwide PC sales.Given current competitive environment, the new achievement positioned Lenovo as a strong challenger to ultimately become the global market leader, Yang said in the statement."We are growing in the enterprise and the consumer space. WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which contains the car-sized Curiosity rover, has been delayed by a day to Nov. 26, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Monday.The delay will "allow time for the team to remove and replace a flight termination system battery," NASA said in a statement.The launch is now scheduled for 10:02 a.m. (1502 GMT) on Saturday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The launch window remains open for one hour and 43 minutes.Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any previous Mars rover. Its 10 science instruments include two for ingesting and analyzing samples of powdered rock delivered by the rover's robotic arm.Scheduled to land on the Mars in August 2012, the one-ton rover will examine Gale Crater during a nearly two-year prime mission. Curiosity will land near the base of a layered mountain three miles (five kilometers) high inside the crater. The rover will investigate whether environmental conditions ever have been favorable for development of microbial life and preserved evidence of those conditions.

BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- Trade volume between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2010 was 36 times what it was in 1991, the year in which formal relations between the two sides were established, according to new statistics.The volume is expected to reach 500 billion U.S. dollars in 2015, according to figures revealed Friday at the China-ASEAN Beijing Economic Forum, an event taking place in China's capital from Dec. 16 to 18 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the China-ASEAN relations.Ma Mingqiang, secretary-general of ASEAN-China Center, said China-ASEAN trade volume totaled 267 billion U.S. dollars in the first three quarters of 2011 and is expected to hit the annual target of 350 billion dollars this year.He said the two parties have become closely linked in the past two decades, as China is now ASEAN's largest trade partner while ASEAN ranks the third among China's trade partners.With the comprehensive implementation of the China-ASEAN Free Trade Agreement in 2010, China has made 90 percent of commodities traded between China and ASEAN countries free of tariffs.China and ASEAN have enjoyed rapid social and economic growth since they established bilateral cooperation, said Surin Pitsuwan, ASEAN secretary-general.ASEAN can provide human resources, natural resources and raw materials for China's industrial development, and it in turn wants to win more investment from China, said Pitsuwan.He said the cooperation not only is a win-win solution for both sides, but will also make a positive contribution to the world.Guo Jinlong, mayor of Beijing, said the city saw a 21.5 percent year-on-year increase in trade volume with ASEAN in 2010, and will further strengthen its cooperation with the countries.ASEAN groups Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

BEIJING, Nov. 26 (Xinhua) -- In response to the government's call to build a greener economy, China's transport authorities have taken a slew of measures to promote energy saving and emission reductions in the sector.Under the sector's funding policy unveiled earlier this year, 122 emission-cutting projects in the industry have received financial support totalling 250 million yuan (39.3 million U.S. dollars). Encouraged by the special funds, another 8.06 billion yuan in investment went to the projects, according to He Jianzhong, spokesman for the Ministry of Transport (MOT).The projects were estimated to be able to save 315,000 metric tons of coal equivalent, replace 224,000 metric tons of fuel oil and reduce carbon dioxide emission by 1.14 million metric tons, He said.Meanwhile, the MOT has launched nationwide programs to promote low-carbon traffic. It has carried out 80 pilot projects on emission control and designated 10 cities as pilot areas to study and promote green transport system, including Tianjin, Shenzhen, Xiamen, Guiyang, Baoding and Wuhan.He said the ministry will continue to intensify efforts to regulate emissions in the sector to meet the industry's control target during the 12th Five-Year Plan period (2011-2015).In efforts to build a more environmental-friendly society, the government pledged that it will reduce the intensity of carbon dioxide emissions per unit of economic output in 2020 by 40 to 45 percent compared with the level of 2005.
