Instead, if you’re still planning to see family, it’s more likely that this is the year you find yourself staying at a hotel or vacation rental.Here’s why you should take advantage of this one silver lining in what most people agree has been a crummy year for traveling and seeing family.You’ll have better quality timeTwenty percent of respondents in SWNS Media Group’s 2019 survey said getting on each other’s nerves was a top concern when it comes to staying with family during the holidays. Another 20% cited family drama. More time together means more opportunities to get annoyed and allow tense topics to creep up: the election, the pandemic, the economy, healthcare … and the list goes on.According to the Centers for Disease Control COVID-19 guidelines, gatherings that last longer pose more risk than shorter gatherings. So instead of a long weekend with family, this year you might meet up for a few hours to have Thanksgiving dinner at a park, or to go on a neighborhood walk to view the Christmas lights.Just a few hours together before heading back to your hotel allows you to focus on easier conversation topics without causing a ruckus. That’s enough time to discuss the latest happenings in Zoom school or to chat about your newfound hobbies, without getting into areas that are more likely to ruffle feathers.You’ll sleep more comfortablyStaying with family as an adult can be uncomfortable — literally. Maybe you and your kids are shoved in a basement. A loose piece of plywood from the futon is jamming into your back. Your kids are in sleeping bags on the floor in the hallway, blocking your path to the bathroom (which you’re sharing with your sibling and their own family).This year, go for the hotel or vacation rental. You’ll have a real bed. The kids might get their own room, and you won’t have to share a bathroom with anyone outside of your household.You’ll also get to live on your own schedule. So turn on the TV in the morning without worrying about your host’s dog barking at it. Or stay out as long as you want, without grandma worrying that you’re out too late (even though you’re a full-grown adult).You have a good excuse not to host guestsIf you’re usually the host, you already know it’s a lot of work. But this year, you’ve got a built-in excuse to avoid those extra loads of laundry and dishes. No making sure you have enough vegan, gluten-free and keto food options in your pantry to accommodate all of your guests.Instead, you have an opportunity to see family members in your city without them living inside your house. This year, you might recommend the family meet up for apple-picking (the CDC lists visiting orchards where people use hand sanitizer before picking apples as only a moderate-risk activity).Even if you’re still serving as the host in some capacity — perhaps offering up your backyard for an outdoor feast — you’re off the hook for one of the worst aspects of being a host: ensuring everyone has a bed to sleep in for the night. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Monday released a new proposal that includes .2 trillion in spending, and sends direct payment of ,200 to most Americans.The proposal still costs more than the White House has said it would like, but is down from the .4 trillion stimulus plan House Democrats passed back in May.In addition to another set of ,200 direct payments to millions of Americans, House Democrats propose using 5 million for education, more funding for the struggling airline industry, and 6 million for local governments. The set of proposals would also include a 0 per week unemployment supplement, which expired at the end of July.“This .2 trillion Heroes Act provides the absolutely needed resources to protect lives, livelihoods and the life of our democracy over the coming months,” Pelosi said in a letter to House Democrats. “It includes new funding needed to avert catastrophe for schools, small businesses, restaurants, performance spaces, airline workers and others.”Last week, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin confirmed that he and Pelosi agreed to relaunch negotiations on a stimulus plan.Earlier this month, Senate Republicans attempted to pass a “slimmed down” stimulus bill with a cost of 0 billion. "This is the first century where we haven’t admitted a new state yet," Strauss told Scripps National Political Editor Joe St. George."That flag used to always change and get more and more stars on it," Strauss added.As shadow-senator, Strauss has no vote in committee or on the floor of the United States Senate. The possibility of another state joining the Union is intensifying as the prospect for a Democratic sweep on Election night increases. WHY ODDS ARE INCREASINGDemocrats are expected to maintain control of the House of Representatives and the chamber has already passed a bill admitting D.C. into the union.Democratic Nominee Joe Biden has also backed the idea. Meanwhile, if Democrats take back the Senate and change the filibuster rule, the possibility of D.C. becoming a state is even more likely. That's because Democrats would only need 51 votes in favor of statehood. Currently 60 votes are needed and unlikely even if Democrats win big on election night. DEMOCRATS' POLITICAL MOTIVE Of course Democrats have a political motive in making the District of Columbia a state beyond the belief that "no taxation without representation" is unjust. D.C. is an overwhelmingly Democratic city with only 4% voting for President Trump in 2016. In all likelihood, two Democratic Senators would be elected, giving Democrats a major political advantage for decades to come. "This is not about the voice of the people of the District of Columbia, this is a raw powerplay," Senator Steve Daines, R-Montana, said in a recent interview with Scripps. Daines says if D.C. truly wants representation, Virginia or Maryland could annex parts of the city where people live. Strauss couldn't disagree more. "We want to join the union. What could be more patriotic than that?" Strauss said. If you receive a call from an unfamiliar number informing you that you've missed jury duty and could be sent to jail if you don't pay a fine, be wary. The call could be a hoax.The scam has claimed a number of victims in the Baltimore area.At least one caller identified himself as a Lieutenant Steven Harris with the Baltimore County Sheriff's office. “They claimed that I had failed to show up, obey a summons in a criminal case, and that the judge had issued a bench warrant for my arrest. And they wanted me to come in right away and straighten it out or they would have to come get me,” said Professor Rena Steinzor who teaches at the University of Maryland Carey Law School.The caller gave the address of the Towson courthouse and instructed her to meet him there with money in hand.“He wanted ,868 in fines for my failure to appear and said I would get the money right back,” said Steinzor.When she explained she couldn't get down to her bank in Capitol Hill and back before the courthouse closed, he told her to purchase a MoneyPak from a CVS or office supply store. The form of payment was a red flag that alerted Steinzor to the fraud.“I think it's stupid to target somebody who's familiar with the criminal justice system and knows that you don't go to CVS and put money on a card if you have to pay a fine in court,” Steinzor said.A co-worker then called the Sheriff's Office who told her it was a trick.Steinzor didn't pay but there are many potential victims. The scheme stretches into areas around the state.Harford, Howard, Cecil, and Frederick counties have all reported similar scams recently. In Frederick County the caller gave the name of a police officer who is actively on the force. They convinced a victim to stay on the phone. The scammer didn't have an accent, they provided real addresses, and they threatened the victim with arrest.“I think the threat that they're going to come and get you is very disconcerting. I mean, I will tell you, I made it all the way to my car,” said Steinzor.The Baltimore County Sheriff said the fraudsster was after the code on the MoneyPak. He would've asked for the code and never appeared at the courthouse.They also said the person in question may be from another country. When police went to investigate, the number Steinzor provided was disconnected.Steinzor wanted to share her story because the scam can be very believable. When she initially called the number, the voicemail made it seem like it was the Sheriff's Office. They also knew where she worked.If you get one of these calls and you're not sure, police advise you to hang up and call the agency's official number on their website to verify.You could be fined or face jail time for failing to appear for jury service, however, courts do not call people to notify them about a bench warrant, nor do they instruct them to bring a “bond voucher” with them to the court.For more information on the scam, click here.  2992
