RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Cal Fire San Diego responded quickly to a house fire in Ramona that spread to nearby brush. According to firefighters, the fire started inside a structure on the 16000 block of Salida Del Sol. Prisons across the country have suddenly become ground zero for the coronavirus.In California’s oldest jail, San Quentin State Prison near San Francisco, the number of cases has ballooned from less than 100 to more than 1,000 in two weeks.Attorneys in the area say the outbreak came from a transfer of inmates from the California Institute for Men to San Quentin.In the closed system that is a prison, it can make social distancing a challenge as there is only so much space to house inmates, particularly at a distance.Prison reform advocates say to solve the problem correctional facilities nationwide have turned to solitary confinement."The reports that I’m getting back now is not ‘Hey they put me in solitary for COVID-19.’ It’s, ‘They’re keeping me in solitary because of COVID-19,’” said Johnny Perez.Perez was formerly incarcerated at Riker’s Island in New York City for an armed robbery he committed when he was 21. He served 13 years for the crime, 3 of which were spent in solitary confinement, he says.“[It gave me] thoughts of suicide, volatility in my emotions,” said Perez. “I still need to sleep with the door open at night.”Perez says the experience in solitary can be similar for most people he knows, and thinks it is a dangerous way to combat COVID-19.“[The corrections system] treating you like an animal for the rest of your life says more about our system than it does about our individuals,” he said. “It is creating and lowering this standard of what it means to be put in solitary that is so low that it reverses all the work that we’ve done so far.”Perez is the director of the U.S. Prisons Program for the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, a group that works closely with the ACLU to form Unlock the Box, a national advocacy group fighting to end solitary confinement. Unlock the Box estimates the number of people currently in solitary confinement in U.S. prisons is 300,000; a large jump from the 60,000 it says was in solitary confinement in February.“There is a perpetuation and it is a really terrible cycle,” said Jessica Sandoval, campaign strategist for Unlock the Box. “[Inmates] are not going to report that they feel bad if that’s what the prison is going to do anyway so it’s pretty dangerous.”In an emailed response the Federal Bureau of Prisons did not respond to questions about solitary confinement in response to COVID-19, but it did say other measures it was taking to reduce the spread of the virus in the prison system through universal distribution of PPE, limited visits to those incarcerated, and no inmate transfers between facilities.Sandoval says medical isolation is a better practice, which does not strip inmates of many of their privileges. She also advocates early release for inmates nearing the end of their sentences or in the process of seeking parole."I think there needs to be a reckoning among corrections leaders and governors to say we’re going to do what’s right,” said Sandoval. (KGTV) - A Ramona couple walking their yellow Labrador puppy say they were attacked by two pit bulls Tuesday night, suffering serious injuries.Michael Dougherty was walking with his wife, Dee, in the Kmart parking lot in the 1800 block of Main Street training their puppy, Rueger. Dougherty said it's easier in the parking lot, as there is more light, compared to their rural neighborhood.As they walked toward the Taco Shop, around 7:15 p.m., Dougherty said from the corner of his eye, he saw two pit bulls charging.RELATED: Dog and owner mauled by pit bull during walk in OceansideThey attacked Rueger and his wife, who went down trying to rescue the dog. Dougherty is recovering from a back injury and walks with a cane. He used it as a weapon."I just started beating the dog, beating the dog, until it [the cane] snapped. This fell down alongside the dog and my wife and she grabbed this and was jamming it into the dog's mouth. When this broke I started punching the dog in the head."Eventually they were able to separate all three dogs. No one escaped uninjured. Researchers in Thailand have been trekking though the countryside to catch bats in their caves in an effort to trace the murky origins of the coronavirus.Initial research has already pointed to bats as the source of the virus that has afflicted more than 20.5 million people and caused the deaths of over 748,000 worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University data. The closest match to the coronavirus has been found in horseshoe bats in Yunnan in southern China.Thailand has 19 species of horseshoe bats but researchers said they have not yet been tested for the new coronavirus.Thai researchers hiked up a hill in Sai Yok National Park in the western province of Kanchanaburi to set up nets to trap some 200 bats from three different caves.The team from the Thai Red Cross Emerging Infectious Diseases-Health Science Center took saliva, blood and stool samples from the bats before releasing them. They worked through the night and into the next day, taking samples not only from horseshoe bats but also from other bat species they caught in order to better understand pathogens carried by the animals.The team was headed by Supaporn Wacharapluesadee, the center’s deputy chief, who has studied bats and diseases associated with them for more than 20 years. He was part of the group that helped Thailand confirm the first COVID-19 case outside China in January.She believes it is likely they will find in Thailand’s bats the same virus that causes COVID-19.“The pandemic is borderless,” she said. “The disease can travel with bats. Researchers are working to find out who is buried in the 604 unmarked graves that were found on Clemson University's campus.In a press release, university officials said crews were surveying the Woodland Cemetery, located near Memorial Stadium in Clemson, South Carolina, when the unmarked graves were found.Using ground-penetrating radar, crews initially found 200 unmarked graves, but as the project went on, crews found 404 more graves."The number of graves coupled with the locations suggests the possibility that some may pre-date the period when the land was part of Calhoun's Fort Hill Plantation from 1830 to 1865," university officials stated in the press release. "Many of the graves are thought to be those of enslaved people who worked at the plantation and later as sharecroppers and Black laborers, including convicted individuals involved in the construction of Clemson College from 1890 to 1915."According to Greenville News, University Historian Paul Anderson and a research assistant will comb through census data and archives to find out who is buried there and when they were placed there.Former Clemson trustee Jim Bostic told the Greenville News that a large memorial would be put in place to honor those in the unmarked graves. 1258
