SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A small wildfire broke out Sunday morning near Vallejo (vuh-LAY'-ho) with flames coming dangerously close to homes and forcing a college to evacuate at the northeast end of San Francisco Bay.A live broadcast on KGO-TV shows the fire on both sides of Interstate 80 and homeowners using hoses on a hillside to try and fight it.The fire forced the freeway to close and the California State University Maritime Academy to issue an evacuation order. The wildfire halted traffic at the Carquinez Bridge toll booth as the freeway became shrouded in thick smoke.Vallejo is 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) south of Geyserville where a massive wildfire forced 180,000 people to flee their communities. 714

SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- Students at some private schools in San Diego returned for on-campus learning Tuesday. The Academy of Our Lady of Peace in Normal Heights is one of them. The 138 year-old Catholic, all-girls high school is the oldest in San Diego.Solana Musicant is excited to start her senior year."I think this is kind of the new normal, I think getting used to it now is really good," said Musicant.Head of School Dr. Lauren Lek said they began preparing for this day as soon as the school year ended."It's about layer upon layer of safety," said Lek.Those layers include face mask requirements, social distancing, and temperature checks upon entry."From our plexiglass desk to 6 feet physical distancing to make at all times to only eating outdoors to even our UV lights that are on in our buildings to help make sure all bacteria and viruses are cleaned out before the air comes into the classrooms," said Lek.Lek says the changes cost more than half a million dollars. The twenty-thousand dollar a year tuition and donations paid for the upgrades. It's an investment Musicant appreciates."I learn better in person, having a teacher there than I do virtually."Lek says 15% of the roughly seven-hundred plus students chose to continue learning virtually from home. 1275

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV) -- With sudden layoffs and overcrowded grocery stores, the coronavirus is making it even more difficult for families to feed themselves. But many are stepping up to distribute food for free.Three hundred sixty-five cars lined up with their trunks popped wide open, ready for bags of free food to be plopped in. Following their new drive-up food bank protocols, volunteers at the Community Through Hope (CTH) warehouse in Chula Vista made no direct contact with the families in line. "We were able to provide so much nutrition in his very safe environment and get it out quickly," Rosey Vasquez, Executive Director of CTH, said. RELATED: South Park restaurant transforms into grocer amid coronavirus closuresSo quickly, they ran out of food in an hour and a half. It was the same story at the Brother Benno Foundation in Oceanside. Their Feeding San Diego distribution was supposed to last all day. But their warehouse cleared up after 150 cars rolled in, in just two hours. Meanwhile, in the Gaslamp District in Downtown San Diego, the kitchen staff at Metl Bar and Restaurant are hard at work. They are not getting nearly as many orders with just take-home and deliveries. But the owners, Jenna and Randy Elskamp, did not want to lay off their staff. Their idea was to have them continue to make hot meals for newly unemployed restaurant workers. RELATED: Grocery stores with hours for seniors amid coronavirus pandemic"We know so many of our friends are not prepared for this, do not have financial means to take care of themselves, and they're all very stressed out," Jenna Elskamp said. "And so giving back to our industry was where we want to help."They have a couple of sponsors now. But the Elskamps have no idea if they could survive this in the long run. But as veterans in the restaurant industry, they said they know the hardships. That is why they set up a section of their website to offer free meals for anyone in the industry struggling to feed themselves."I feel like we are all on a sinking ship right now," Jenna said. "Instead of being the rats who are trying to climb up to the very top of the ship to save themselves, we want to be there at the bottom, trying to help everyone survive. Because we either make it out of this together or we don't. We're just trying to do our part."RELATED: Feeding San Diego adding more pickup locationsStaff at San Diego's many food distribution centers said there is a limited supply. So to have a better chance of getting the food bags, arrive at the warehouses early. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)- With record-breaking heat this summer and many people working from home, San Diegans may have seen a spike in their energy bill. OhmConnect is a free service helping residents earn cash and save energy.“We’ve seen people’s energy bills increase typically from 10 to 15 percent,” says Curtis Tongue, Co-Founder of OhmConnect. With more energy use, the county has been no stranger to rolling blackouts. OhmConnect is hoping to change that.“Instead of powering up some additional power plant, after the sun sets, alternatively, you can just get people to save energy,” says Tongue. The free service pays users every week to save money.“We will send you a text message and ask you to power down for about an hour, and if you do, you get paid.”A new incentive program for users already has some people cashing in from a prize pool. Last week a woman in Northern California won 0,000. A woman in San Diego was rewarded ,000. A ,000 prize was also given to a resident who lives in San Diego county.Users must meet the energy-saving goal for an OhmHour to be placed in the prize pool. 1108

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -The extended patio seating in the Gaslamp Quarter is here to stay for now, according to the Gaslamp Quarter Association. Thanks to a special events permit, as long as social distancing is required, restaurants will overflow into the streets with patio dining Thursday through Saturday each weekend through the end of the year.Manager at The Field Phil Nestor was thrilled to see how busy it was Saturday, saying the patios made a "100%, a million times over," difference to recuperating after being shut down during the pandemic. He said people feel more comfortable sitting outside, and diners said they enjoyed the atmosphere."I think it's actually a pretty good idea, it reminds me of my time in Europe so I think it's pretty cool," Luis Morales said.Fifth Avenue shut down between G and L Streets Thursday through Saturday to make way for the patios, and was slow to start."I think the first day everyone was finding their feet I guess, they were seeing how many tables they could put in their area," Nestor said.By Saturday nearly a dozen restaurants expanded into the streets.Morales said they enjoyed themselves, "we came out to get together with the boys and just finally get a sense of normalcy."Right now normalcy comes with hand sanitizing stations at each table and masks while you're waiting to be seated."I always take my precautions," one diner said. The man said he came down from Los Angeles to celebrate his birthday and felt safer in San Diego compared to up north where Orange County reduced their mask policy to "strongly recommended."Last weekend images of crowds not social distancing, or wearing masks in the Gaslamp Quarter garnered harsh words from County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher. He said earlier this week targeted enforcement would ensure this doesn't happen again.Nestor said the weight falls on restaurants to enforce the county's policies, "we're responsible for our patio and the surrounding areas and making sure people are in the line wearing masks and they're social distancing.""You can't just run into the street and tell someone to do something but you're doing your best and I think most people whether they're drunk or not, I think taking responsibility for themselves too which is a good thing to see," he said.He and other businesses are hopeful as long as the patio dining is successful and they keep everyone healthy this could become a more permanent fixture."I hope it becomes a permanent thing, a lot of the restaurants do," Nestor said, hopeful business will continue to climb, helping them recover from the pandemic. 2592
