A potential tropical storm has its eyes on Puerto Rico this week, prompting the National Hurricane Center to issue a tropical storm warning for the island territory.The unnamed storm has not officially been deemed a tropical storm, but is topping low-end tropical storm winds of 40 MPH. A number of other Caribbean islands, including the US Virgin Islands, are under tropical storm warnings.Because the storm lacks a well-defined center, it is not considered a tropical storm officially. But the National Hurricane Center expects the disturbance it has named “Potential Tropical Cyclone No. 9” to better organize in the next day.After it passes the Caribbean islands, it will begin approaching the East Coast of the US. A video of a Missoula, Montana Pita Pit employee spitting in a customer's food during what appears to be an argument has gone viral, prompting the restaurant to issue an apology. The video was posted early Saturday morning, and has since been shared more than 5,000 times. The video, which lasts 30 seconds, appears to be during the middle of an argument over the store's hours. In the video, one of the customers apparently dared the employee to spit in the food. Once the employee spit in the food, a customer jumped over the counter briefly. The owner of the Missoula Pita Pit location issued a statement on its Facebook account. "There is no excuse whatsoever for the type of behavior shown by an employee that I can assure you is no longer working for us," the statement read. "This is an owner run store. We work here forty plus hours per week, but we are not in during all hours of operation. This employee’s behavior does not represent who we are as a family or a business. A new study out of Boston University has found depression in adults and teenagers has more than tripled since the pandemic started.According to researchers, symptoms of depression among Americans has increased from 8.5 percent pre-pandemic to 27.8 percent. It is a precipitous rise in an illness that can create a loss of enthusiasm, feelings of hopelessness, changes in diet, and changes in sleep patterns.“I feel like everyone is understanding what it’s like this year,” said Shane Weeks, a 26-year-old from Maine, who says he has been battling depression since he was 10. “Even people I feel like who have never faced depression or anxiety before are facing it now.”According to the American Psychiatric Association, symptoms of depression must last at least two weeks and must represent a change in one’s previous level of functioning for an official diagnosis.“I buy stuff so it’ll come in the mail, just so I have something to look forward to, said Weeks.“It’s just a total feeling of zero energy. [There is] hopelessness, utter hopelessness, and I don’t want to feel this way.”The study’s author, Catherine Ettman, says for many who are dealing with depression, understanding that others feel similarly can be empowering and comforting since symptoms of depression can feel isolating.“For those who may be feeling depressed during this time you are not alone,” she said. “I think this [study’s findings] calls for a doubling down in our social investment in supporting people through difficult economic times.”Researchers at BU found income can be a predictor of pandemic-induced depression. They found those with lower incomes were twice as likely to develop depressive symptoms, while those with less than ,000 in their savings were one and a half times more likely to experience symptoms of depression.“It’s just so hard not to be pessimistic because there’s rarely any good news,” said Weeks.For Weeks, that doubling down in mental health assistance is significant. He says in normal times he would find solace in international travel, as he’s been able to visit six continents in the last decade. However, now, he says he is left to his own devices.“You’re either going to wake up and it’s going to be the same exact thing that you experienced yesterday, or it feels like it’s going to be something even worse,” he said.Researchers from the study say the rise in depression from COVID-19 has been higher than that experienced after 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. 2481

A Marine lance corporal who marched at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia last year has been kicked out of the service after he spent nearly a month jail.According to the Jacksonville Daily News in Jacksonville, North Carolina, Vasillios Pistolis, 19, was discharged from duty and kicked out of the Marine Corps on July 11. Pistolis was court-martialed on June 18 for an investigation into violations of Articles 92 and 107 of the Uniform of Military Justice.Among the violations covered in those articles are making "false statements," "failure to obey orders or regulations" and "dereliction of duty."Pistolis was sentenced to 28 days in confinement in the brig, a forfeiture of some of his paycheck and a reduction of rank.ProPublica and Frontline reported in June that Pistolis marched at the "Unite The Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. At that rally, one counter-protester was killed when James Alex Fields drove his car into a crowd.ProPublica and Frontline's report also alleged that Pistolis was a member of a known white supremacist and neo-Nazi group.   1156
