Italian authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of death of 26 teenage girls whose bodies were recovered in the Mediterranean Sea on Sunday.The girls, aged 14-18, are believed to have been migrants from Niger and Nigeria who had embarked on the treacherous route to Europe from Libya over the weekend.Lorena Ciccotti, Salerno's head of police, told CNN that autopsies would be carried out on Tuesday and that coroners would be investigating whether the girls had been tortured or sexually abused.Their bodies were found close to a flimsy rubber dinghy that had all but sunk when rescuers arrived, Ciccotti said. Aid workers had described a grim scene: survivors hanging onto the remains of the vessel as the girls' bodies floated nearby.Their rescue was one of four separate rescue operations carried out in the Mediterranean over the weekend. In total, 400 people were brought aboard the Spanish vessel Cantabria before disembarking at the Italian port town of Salerno.Among them were 90 women and 52 minors, including a week-old-baby, authorities said.Libya is a well-known jumping-off point for migrants seeking refuge on European shores. Many from sub-Saharan Africa, are fleeing war and persecution; others from impoverished nations in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia have made the treacherous journey in search of better economic opportunities.The North African country is a hotbed for human traffickers, whose network of smuggling operations have gone widely unchecked due to Libya's lack of effective central governance.On Monday, Italian police arrested two men, an Egyptian and a Libyan accused with human smuggling. INDIANTOWN, Fla. — Heartbreaking new details are coming to light about the deadly shooting of a mother in front of her six children on Tuesday.According to Martin County, Florida, Sheriff William Snyder, Maribel Rosado Morales, 32, was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Donald Williams, 27, inside a home.The sheriff said six children, ranging in age from 9 to 17, were inside the home at the time of the shooting."We think most of the children in the home saw it," Snyder said at a news conference on Tuesday.On Wednesday, WPTV spoke to Morales' fiancé and brother, both of who did not want to be identified. They confirmed that all six children are Morales' and she was keeping them home from school because of the COVID-19 pandemic."She was a strong person. She was a loving person," said Morales' brother.Morales' fiancé said he was on the phone with her when the shooting happened, and he could hear the children yelling that their mother had been shot.The fiancé said that after Morales was hit, she barricaded herself inside a closet for her safety and so her children wouldn't see."I was on the phone with her. I said, 'baby, call the police,'" Morales' fiancé said. "Why? She didn’t do nothing. Why? She didn’t deserve it. I wasn’t there to save her. I wasn’t there."Sheriff Snyder said at least one of the children was doing virtual learning during the first day of school in Martin County when the gunfire rang out."[The teacher] did hear some high tone conversation, noticed some kind of confrontation, muted it, and then watched the [child] put her hands up to her ears," Sheriff Snyder said.On Wednesday, Morales' family members said the child on the class call at the time is 9 years old and has Down syndrome.Williams was taken into custody not long after the shooting while trying to board a public transportation bus.“I have hatred. In Houston, Texas, everything is bigger, including the city’s problem with PPE litter.Many of the masks, gloves, and bottles of hand sanitizer being used to protect people during the pandemic aren’t being disposed of properly and some are worried it’s becoming a health hazard.Now, city leaders are taking matters into their own hands while trying to take PPE litter off the street“I know that they say everything is bigger in Texas but we definitely don’t want to be known for a big litter problem,” said Martha Castex-Tatum, Houston’s Vice Mayor Pro-Tem, who is helping launch the city’s new anti-PPE littering campaign.“It’s not only unsightly but it’s also a health issue,” she said. “If the PPE is contaminated, we don’t want other people touching it.”Castex-Tatum says stopping litter before it starts could save money in the long run.“It’s always expensive to pick up litter,” she said. “For instance, this PPE litter ends up in our drains. The city of Houston, we spend million a year cleaning out our drains.”Down the drains and into waterways, where the health impacts could be significant.“Unlike sewage systems, storm water is untreated and it flows directly into our lakes and our rivers and our oceans. There’s no intermediate treatment,” said Rachel Meidl, LP.D., CHMM, a fellow in energy and environment at Rice Univeristy.
