BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin said Friday that accelerating the transformation of economic growth mode was an important strategic task for China's social and economic development.Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), made the remarks at the four-day 10th session of the Standing Committee of 11th CPPCC National Committee, which closed Friday morning. He called for more efforts to expand domestic demand and re-adjust income distribution to foster a pattern of economic growth jointly driven by domestic demand, investment and exports.Greater efforts must also be paid to re-adjusting industrial patterns, enhancing China's innovation capacity, boosting urbanization, saving energy, and reducing emissions, he said.During the session, Standing Committee members held discussions over the drawing of China's next five-year plan for social and economic development, and offered advice to senior officials from more than 30 central ministries or commissions.Jia urged all CPPCC members to contribute to the making of the five-year plan with valuable proposals on key issues. He also called on CPPCC members and organizations at all levels to conduct surveys so as to offer solutions to major problems of the ongoing health-care reform at a lecture held by the CPPCC Standing Committee.
URUMQI, June 14 (Xinhua) -- China is diversifying its methods of importing energy from neighbor countries in central Asia as a train carrying 45 tonnes of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from Kazakhstan reached the country's inland port of Alataw Pass on Monday in the northwest Xinjiang region. It also marked the first time China imported energy from central Asia using railroads, rather than pipelines, since the founding of new China back in 1949."Central Asia is rich in oil and gas. China's state-owned oil giant CNPC has made large investments in recent years to purchase and explore resources in the region," said Gao Hongbo, general manager of a privately-run logistics and financial services company based in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region."Oil and gas could be transported through pipelines but the liquefied gas, obtained as a by-product from the refining of petroleum, could not be effectively transported due to the product's nature, causing huge waste," Gao said.Gao said the only option is to import the liquefied gas using railways, given current circumstances. But China's railways use the standard gauge (distance between rails at 1,435 mm), which is different from its Central-Asian neighbors' broad rail gauge (distance above 1,435 mm), and special lines need first to be built for the mass importing of LPG.Gao said his company has so far spent 300 million yuan (44 million U.S. dollars) in building nine broad-gauge rails and six standard gauge rails in Alataw Pass. These lines are expected to import 50,000 tonnes of LPG this year. The company plans a total of 21 lines to be built, and the annual capacity of these lines is expected to reach 200,000 tonnes of LPG during the next three years. These lines, when completed, will also be used to import 500,000 tonnes of oil each year and 2.5 million tonnes of commodities and mineral resources from central Asia.
TOKYO, July 23 (Xinhua) -- New Japanese Ambassador to China Uichiro Niwa on Friday called for deepening of Sino-Japanese mutually beneficial strategic relations."In recent years the leaders of the two countries have created a conducive environment for the development of bilateral ties. I am very glad to see that," Niwa told Chinese press in Tokyo.Upon his assignment to China, the Japanese ambassador said China and Japan, as close neighbors, should deal with each other for the upcoming 1,000 or 2,000 years rather than 10 or 20 years. In the long run, both countries share a lot of common interests, and a stable, friendly relationship is the ultimate goal. The former president of Itochu Corp. said that he aimed to boost communication, strengthen economic cooperation, and build on the mutual trust between the leaders of the two countries.Niwa also said in the age of multipolarization, no one can conduct diplomacy with knowledge of China alone. So the relations with South Korea, and the United States are also important.Niwa was appointed by Prime Minister Naoto Kan in June to the key diplomatic post, making him the first ambassador to China from outside the government sector since the two countries normalized ties in 1972. He will leave for Beijing on July 31.
