SAN DIEGO (CNS) - SeaWorld San Diego announced Friday that it reached a milestone in the construction of its ``dive'' roller coaster by installing the ride's highest section of track 153 feet above ground. The ``topping-out'' ceremony included a crane placing an American flag at the ride's highest section. The ride, slated to open next summer, is being built adjacent to the Journey to Atlantis attraction, on what had previously been a parking lot. Construction on the ride, advertised as the tallest, fastest and longest such coaster in the state, began in August. The park originally announced the ride in January with the name ``Mako'' after the endangered shark species, which is considered the fastest shark in the world. Park officials announced its new name, Emperor, last month, saying it would reflect the ability of emperor penguins to dive to depths of 1,800 feet in the waters of their native Antarctica. After the 153-foot climb, Emperor will plunge back down 143 feet while reaching speeds of more than 60 mph, according to SeaWorld. The ride will include nearly 2,500 feet of track, ``floorless'' cars that will hold 18 riders in three six-person rows and penguin conservation and awareness elements through a partnership with Penguins International. The ride is being built by Swiss roller coaster manufacturer Bolliger & Mabillard Consulting Engineers. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Friday identified a 44-year-old man who was found fatally wounded inside a vehicle in the Encanto area of San Diego.The man was identified as Gilbert Lee Johnson, of San Diego, the San Diego Police Department reported.Officers found Johnson about 7:40 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Varney and Theodore drives, said Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.After police received multiple calls of gunshots heard in the area, officers reported finding him slumped over in the vehicle suffering from at least one apparent gunshot wound. Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, said San Diego police Lt. Matt Dobbs."It appears the victim was in the area talking to an acquaintance when another vehicle pulled up near the victim. The suspect got out of his vehicle and fired several rounds at the victim," Dobbs said. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials confirmed 279 new COVID-19 cases and one additional death Sunday, increasing the region's totals to 46,610 cases and 776 fatalities.The one death was a woman in her late 70s who had an underlying medical condition.One new community outbreak in a business was confirmed as of Saturday. From Sept. 20 to Sept. 26, 18 community outbreaks were confirmed. The number of community outbreaks remains above the trigger of seven or more in seven days.The county reported 8,550 tests as of Saturday and the percentage of new laboratory-confirmed cases was 3%.The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 3.3%. The target is less than 8%. The seven-day daily average of tests was 8,483.San Diego State University reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,072 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Saturday.Of the students living on campus, 385 have tested positive and students living off campus totaled 666 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 "visitors," people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive.The number of confirmed cases was 1,030, with 42 probable cases.The information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official. As more private labs are administering tests, there is a possibility that not all cases are being reported to Student Health Services.Of the total number of cases in the county, 3,497 -- or 7.5% -- have required hospitalization and 816 -- or 1.8% of all cases -- had to be admitted to an intensive care unit.Under state monitoring metrics, San Diego County is currently in the second tier, or the red tier. The county's state-calculated, adjusted case rate is 6.9 per 100,000 residents. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego City Councilman Chris Cate will unveil 190 new parking spaces in the congested Convoy District in Kearny Mesa Tuesday before the City Council reviews that neighborhood's community plan."If you've been to the Convoy District, you know that finding a parking space can be extremely challenging," Cate said."My office has unwaveringly supported the small businesses in this hub for Asian cuisine and culture. To ensure this community project came to fruition, we spent countless days working side-by-side with business owners to ensure they were included in this process. Angled parking is the tip of the iceberg for the entire Kearny Mesa Community Plan process."Kearny Mesa was founded in 1937. Over the past eight decades, the commercially and industrially dense neighborhood has transformed into an iconic San Diego community, featuring the Convoy District, which recently formed a "Pan Asian Cultural District."Cate, in June of 2016, began the process of implementing angled parking in the Convoy District at the community's request. Two years later during his State of the District address, he announced the installation of 200 angled parking spaces would immediately begin.A total of 190 angled parking spaces have been added in the neighborhood, including 45 on Dagget Street, 80 on Vickers Street and 65 on Opportunity Road.The existing community plan for Kearny Mesa has not been updated since 1992. For the past two years, the San Diego's Planning Department has led the Kearny Mesa Community Plan update to determine how Kearny Mesa will develop in the future. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Opening statements are scheduled Monday in the murder trial of a man accused in the 2015 shooting death of a customer during a robbery at a Clairemont-area gas station convenience store, as well as a shootout with police two days after the killing.Ahmed Hassan Mumin, 34, is charged with murder, robbery, burglary, and being a felon in possession of a firearm in connection with the April 16, 2015, death of 48-year-old Eric Schade. Mumin also faces a special circumstance allegation that the killing happened during the course of a robbery, meaning he faces life imprisonment without the possibility of parole if convicted.He's also charged with two counts of attempted murder on a peace officer for opening fire on two arresting officers in an April 18 shootout at a City Heights apartment.At his preliminary hearing, surveillance footage was shown allegedly depicting Mumin inside an Arco am/pm at around 3:45 a.m., pointing a gun at the clerk and demanding cash. The store clerk testified that the robber was wearing a dark beanie and a bandana covering his face.The clerk testified that he put the cash drawer on the counter. But Schade -- a neighborhood regular -- took a swipe at the robber's gun as if to push it out of his face, and Mumin took a step back and shot the victim once in the chest, prosecutors alleged.The footage shows the shooter rifling through the cash drawer, then fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.Two days later, officers tracked Mumin to an apartment complex on Winona Avenue in City Heights. Police officers testified that Mumin hid behind a set of doors in a community room. As a detective tried one of the doors, the defendant opened fire from behind another door, prompting the detectives to return fire, according to testimony.Mumin was shot in the abdomen by police and hospitalized.Co-defendant Adan Ibrahim -- allegedly the getaway driver -- was previously charged with murder, though that count was dismissed earlier this year by San Diego County Superior Court Judge Kenneth K. So through application of the state's new felony murder rule. He still faces trial on robbery charges.Ibrahim's girlfriend, Kristine Mariano, was also in the getaway car during the robbery, according to prosecutors. She pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact earlier this year and awaits sentencing. 2365
