SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A man who was convicted of robbing a Chula Vista bank and fleeing the scene on a Lime scooter was sentenced on Monday to nearly five years in prison.Mario Daniel Haro, a 32-year-old United States citizen who lived in Rosarito, Mexico, was sentenced to 57 months in prison and must pay restitution for robbing the Chase Bank at 2121 Olympic Parkway in October 2019.In February, Haro admitted to entering the bank, telling a bank teller he had a gun, and handing the teller a threatening note, reading “I have a GUN! Give me all money. NO INK Packages."The teller complied with Haro's demands, officials said, and gave him about ,000. Haro then fled the scene on a Lime electric scooter.“Unfortunately this defendant failed to take advantage of his second chance and committed an additional violent crime,” said U.S. Attorney Robert Brewer. “As this case demonstrates, individuals who reoffend will be investigated, arrested and convicted and usually the sentence will be longer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A man fell to his death from state Route 125 in the Bonita area Tuesday morning after a crash in which his car struck and killed a deer on the freeway.Friends told 10News the victim was Martin Lapisch, 44, a Chula Vista resident who is survived by his wife, Linda, and 15-month-old son Kenneth. He was a German immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2003, friends said.“He was a new dad with big dreams, whose life was cut short after a terrible, early morning accident," said a close friend of the victim. “He was a loving father, husband, brother and an awesome friend. He always helped people in need and never asked anything in return," said Lapisch's friend Peter Kritzko.Friends and family gathered together after the incident at Lapisch's home and spoke with 10News but asked not to be identified at this time.California Highway Patrol Sgt. Steve Jio said they received reports just before 4:45 a.m. of a car that hit a deer and then stalled on northbound SR-125 just before the transition to state Route 54.Jio said responding officers and fire crews arrived to find the car in the No. 2 lane abandoned with the dead deer in front of it. 1207

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local musician is facing a painful COVID-19 toll, losing three family members and five friends to the virus.David Whitman's first loss to COVID-19 came in late April with the passing of Jeanne Fisher, his great-aunt."Went downhill fairly quickly and passed away at a nursing home in the Chicago area," said Whitman.In early June, his grandmother Beverly Whitman, 92, became sick at a nursing home in Wisconsin. She died June 13."I know the morphine they gave her. She really needed it. It was not an easy way to go," said Whitman.A few days before she passed, she was able to share a room with her husband of 69 years, Robert Whitman, 93, also diagnosed with coronavirus. He died three days after her death."His condition deteriorated pretty quickly I think after my grandmother passed away," said Whitman.Whitman's emotions are still raw."It's really tough not to be with family, not being able to get together to mourn," said Whitman.Whitman, a professional musician, is also grieving the death of five friends from the world of music. A few days ago, he released a recording of his award-winning song "I Have A Friend," which was inspired by his grandmother.
