Jessica Davis has been teaching in the Sweetwater Union High School District for almost five years. She's just one of more than 220 layoffs in the district's effort to balance the budget that's been crippling for years."I really poured my heart and soul into my career," said Davis. "I don't know that she should continue in any capacity," said Davis. (KGTV) - A growing number of San Diego County high school students are being recruited to act as drug mules for Mexican cartels, the U.S. Attorney for San Diego said Tuesday.The most recent charges were filed against Philip Junior Webb, a former student at Castle Park High School in Chula Vista. Federal prosecutors accuse Webb of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances and bringing in unlawful aliens, including a Mexican national and Chinese national, for financial gain.“We are seeing a very troubling trend and we want to warn parents and high schoolers,” said U.S. Attorney Sherri Walker Hobson.According to court documents, Webb was a high school senior who recruited other students to smuggle methamphetamine and Fentanyl into the United States on multiple occasions.On each occasion, the juveniles had drugs strapped on their bodies as they attempted to enter the United States, investigators said.“This is a dangerous trend because this is no longer a situation where it’s the guy with the tattoos on the corner parking lot recruiting people to do drug deals. This is someone who is one of the students. He’s one of the students. He could be your lab partner. He could be the guy next door. He could be the girl next door in the school locker area,” said Walker Hobson.Webb is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.In an unrelated incident, another high school student was charged with conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine at San Ysidro High School.  Agents said they found five kilograms of methamphetamine in the student’s back seat. 1595

CINCINNATI — Cross-country runner Justin Gallegos is making history. He’s the first athlete with cerebral palsy to sign an endorsement contract with Nike. The University of Oregon junior was given the news last weekend after a college race, and he was visibly touched by achieving his dream of becoming a professional runner. Justin’s parents, Brent and Tracy Gallegos, say they’re proud all Justin has worked to achieve, and were stunned to see him in that moment."I’ve never seen him that emotional ever…..ever," Brent Gallegos said.Justin’s condition affects muscle and motor function, but he didn’t let that stop him."He works very hard for it and when he sets his goals, he sets them very high," Tracy Gallegos said.His story of overcoming obstacles is inspiring others. He was a big topic of conversation among some medical professionals attending a three-day conference for the American Academy of Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine hosted by Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. "To show the world that we really can be successful and contribute in some way to society and that we’re valuable," said Dr. Raffi Najarian, who has cerebral palsy.He hopes stories like Justin’s will inspire others."It’s great to see because it’s something that we have seen, you know, up to this point," Najarian said.As for Justin, he has a message for everyone: "You don’t have to let your disability or physical impairments stop you." 1440

(KGTV) — Emergency crews Saturday were working to pull a submerged vehicle out of Otay Lakes.It's unclear how the vehicle became submerged and whether anyone was inside the vehicle. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - An Eastlake pizza restaurant shut down Wednesday after an inspection turned up signs of rodent nests, droppings and urine.Filippi’s Pizza Grotto at 871 Showroom Place, near Otay Lakes Road and Hunte Parkway, received a primary inspection report April 18 from the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health.The inspector found 20 dried rodent droppings in a back oven and rodent nests in the panels of two ovens, County documents showed. There were also rodent droppings in utensil storage areas, beneath a stove, and dry storage areas, according to the report.The report indicated there were multiple holes in an exterior wall and a door leading to the outdoor trash area that building management had ordered to remain open.The County Dept. of Environmental Health conducted a second inspection the following day.The inspector reported six dried mouse droppings and two fresh rat droppings in dry storage on the building’s second floor, according to County documents.There was also dried urine on the plastic wrapper of cardboard pizza boxes and gnaw marks through plastic into boxes, the report said.The operator of Filippi’s told the inspector the restaurant had been deep-cleaned before the re-inspection.Filippi’s reopened Friday afternoon, according to County health officials. 1333
