Gunnery Sergeant Roy Wesley Brady Jr. retired from the Marine Corps after 22 years of service. On Monday, he left San Diego for New Jersey.It is a journey that will take about half a year to complete, and it is not the first time he has made the intense trek.Check out the story I did with him. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A man was hospitalized Saturday night after being stabbed several times during a confrontation in Mission Beach, police said.The incident happened around 8 p.m. in the 900 block of West Mission Bay, said Ofc. Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Heims said a 26-year-old man approached and exchanged words with a 50-year-old man. The younger man then pulled out a knife and stabbed the victim multiple times."The victim fell to the ground and the suspect fled the scene," Heims said. "The victim was transported to the hospital where his injuries were determined (to be) non-life threatening."The suspect was caught a short time later and arrested. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Fire-Rescue chaplain found himself in need after flames ripped through his apartment in Old Town.Father David Fucci was with a friend last Thursday night when he got a call."My neighbor calls and says, 'Your apartment is on fire'," said Father Fucci.As he raced home, a mix of feelings washed over him. For about seven years, he's served as a volunteer chaplain, consoling victims during tragedy."That night, it felt surreal. Almost like an out-of-body experience. Normally I'm the one driving to the scene, thinking about what I can say," said Father Fucci.Instead, he could only watch as flames claimed his home. "Just kept thinking, don't let it spread to any other apartments and thankfully, it didn't," said Father Fucci.Then, something remarkable happened. As word spread of whose apartment it was, some familiar faces began appearing, including five other volunteer chaplains and a battalion chief."They took the time to put a hand on my shoulders. I knew I was blessed," said Father Fucci.Father Fucci found himself the person receiving comfort. "Sometimes those that give, it's hard to receive ... the compassion, love and help. You learn to let go," said Father Fucci.In the end, the apartment was declared a total loss. Amid the ashes, Father Fucci found something that survived."I found a picture of Mom and Dad. Last picture of them. They died a year later," said Father Fucci.He also discovered something else. He calls it a blessing born from his loss: a perspective that will allow him to better help others at the next scene."Now you have a greater understanding of what they need," said Father Fucci.Father Fucci did not have renters insurance. He tells us the cause is accidental, but the exact cause hasn't been determined.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help him with expenses. 1844

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego family is preparing to uproot their lives and move across the country so their 2-year-old son can get a life-altering liver transplant.After Gavin was born, Kendra and Vince Giacalone waited nearly two years for answers on what was wrong with their son.Eventually, through exome sequencing, they learned Gavin had a rare genetic disorder: GM3 Synthase Deficiency. He's missing an enzyme which helps with brain development.The family read online there was no treatment or medicine for their son but they refused to give up.After connecting with specialists they are now hopeful a liver transplant from Kendra's sister will replace the enzyme Gavin is missing.The family will move to Pittsburg for several months while Gavin gets the transplant.All transplant costs are being covered by the Children's Organ Transplant Association (COTA).The family is trying to raise ,000 for COTA in Gavin's name - 100 percent of donations will go to Gavin.You can also follow Gavin's Rare Journey on Facebook.  1041

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A new report is calling for San Diego County jail reforms to address mental health issues and inmate suicides.From 2014-2016, 17 people have died by suicide while being held in a San Diego County jail facility, according to an investigation?by Disability Rights California (DRC).By this rate, the group says San Diego County's rate of inmate suicide is "staggeringly" high compared to national, statewide, and local data. During this three-year period, the county's rate of 107 deaths per 100,000 was double the national rate of 50 per 100,000, the group says.More: TEAM 10 INVESTIGATIONS"People with mental health needs and their families deserve better," DRC Attorney Rebecca Cervenak said. "Without appropriate community services and improved conditions, people will continue to suffer."The report says four aspects contribute to the high suicide rate: over-incarceration of people with mental health needs, lack of jail oversight, failure to provide mental health treatment and harmful solitary confinement, and a lack of efficient suicide prevention.DRC spoke with jail staff, inmates, and San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) leadership as part of their investigation.The SDSO said they welcome feedback regarding the jail system and will work to improve procedures, but had a number of concerns with how data was gathered and recommendations were formed: 1409
