OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A desperate mother is making a plea for tips after a thief snatched her van, a "lifeline" for her special needs daughter.Veronica Lara lives on Harrison Street. Her 7-year-old daughter, Sophie, suffers from Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy, and a rare chromosomal disorder called Pallister-Killian Mosaic Syndrome. A year ago, her family spent ,000 making her 2015 Toyota Sienna wheelchair accessible."It's my daughter's lifeline. He is no longer able to work as a tow truck driver, which will squeeze the family's finances."I'm still standing strong. I'm a strong momma, but this special needs family has gone through a lot, and this just added to my grief and anxiety ... (AP) — A worker doing an inspection on a popular central Florida thrill ride was killed Monday after falling more than 50 feet.Orange County Fire Rescue tweeted that firefighters responded to the Orlando StarFlyer ride early Monday after receiving a report that the 21-year-old man had fallen. The unidentified worker was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.The ride wasn’t moving at the time.At 450 feet, the Orlando StarFlyer is billed as the world’s tallest swing ride. Visitors in swings rotate around a pole reaching speeds up to 45 mph. The ride is located on International Drive, the busy tourist corridor in Orlando. 659

Oceanside (KGTV): The Main Attraction is getting ready for its last dance.The popular topless bar, the last of its kind in the North County, was recently sold. Developers now plan to turn the land it sits on, as well as more than 5 acres around it, into a mixed-use housing project.Papers filed with the City of Oceanside Planning Department show plans for a five story, 308-unit complex that also includes 4,000 square feet of street front retail stores and a six-story parking garage. Wood Partners and Lightfoot Planning Group filed the plans.The land sits just west of the 5 freeway near the intersection of North Coast Highway and Costa Pacifica Way. A vacant lot covers most of the 5.3-acre parcel. A few abandoned warehouses and the strip club stand as the only buildings around."It is exciting," says Leslee Gaul, the CEO of Visit Oceanside. "It’s part of the renaissance in our community, and I think it’s a great location."Gaul's office is right across the street from the topless bar. She works in the California Welcome Center. The Main Attraction is the first thing most visitors see when they get off the freeway in Oceanside.Gaul says the club has been a good neighbor, but she's ready for the change."It’s been a low key, positive relationship for many years," she says. "But as things change and our community changes, this is part of that."Homes within the complex will range from a 550 square foot studio to 1,550 square foot townhomes. The majority of the 308 units will be either one or two-bedroom apartments. Meanwhile, the plans from the developer say residents will have modern amenities, including "an indoor‐outdoor social lounge with pool access and catering kitchen, a fitness center, an artist center, bicycle room, and surfboard storage." There will also be a 5th‐floor deck with an ocean view.Phone calls to the developer, the city and the topless bar weren't returned this week. On Friday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's list of hand sanitizer products to avoid grew to 101 entries.Based on FDA test results, these products have "concerningly low levels of ethyl alcohol or isopropyl alcohol, which are active ingredients in hand sanitizer products," according to the department.The list includes those subpotent products, as well as those that may be contaminated with methanol. On social media, Nikolas Cruz did not appear to be a peaceful man. He made quite clear his desire to perpetrate the exact type of violence of which he now stands accused.Before he allegedly committed one of the worst mass shootings in US history at a Parkland, Florida, high school on Wednesday, police officials say Cruz wrote social media posts so threatening he was twice reported to the FBI.He hurled slurs at blacks and Muslims, and according to the Anti-Defamation League, had ties to white supremacists. He said he would shoot people with his AR-15 and singled out police and anti-fascist protesters as deserving of his vengeance. Just five months ago, he stated his aspiration to become a "professional school shooter."Yet on the morning of the massacre, the family that took the 19-year-old into their home didn't notice anything terribly strange about the young man's behavior, the family's attorney said Thursday.The only thing abnormal was that he didn't get up for his adult GED class. Normally, the father would take him to class on the way to work, but when they tried to wake Cruz up Wednesday, he said something like, "It's Valentine's Day. I don't go to school on Valentine's Day," according to the lawyer."They just blew it off," attorney Jim Lewis said. "This is some 19-year-old that didn't want to get up and go to school that day, and (they) left it at that."The family took Cruz in last year after his adoptive mother died. Cruz was depressed, Lewis said. The family's son knew Cruz, so they opened their home, got him into a GED class and helped him get a job at a Dollar Tree, the lawyer said."He seemed to be doing better," Lewis said.Prior to the mass shooting that left 17 adults and children dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, Cruz had exchanged texts with the son, who was a student there.Lewis characterized the texts as, "How you doing? He had to keep it in a lockbox in his room. They had it locked up and believed that that was going to be sufficient, that there wasn't going to be a problem.
