She says there simply isn’t enough profit to pay them more, making an increase in minimum wage a bit of a concern.“As the owner, I struggle to stay above water financially myself,” Righter says.Robel Worku works for Colorado People’s Alliance, an organization that fights for justice in economic issues.“I think the argument is that if those costs go up, it’s harder to keep their doors open,” Worku said.Worku says COPA was recently able to help get a Colorado bill passed that gives authority to local governments to increase minimum wages.“The federal minimum wage has stayed stagnant at around .25 for the past 10 or so years, and even beyond that hasn’t raised much within the past few decades,” Worku said.Numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor show there was a steady increase in minimum wage from 2007 to 2009, raising it by a .40, but there hasn’t been a raise since. And before that, the last raise was 10 years prior in 1997. Worku says his organization believes everyone should be afforded the right to earn a livable wage, which is around per hour in Denver, Colorado.
