BEIJING, May 5 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday called for more efforts to cut emissions and conserve energy to meet the country's target set by the 11th Five-Year Plan.According to the plan laid out in 2006, China will cut its per unit GDP energy consumption by 20 percent compared with 2005 levels by the end of 2010.The task of fulfilling the goal was still tough , Wen said at a State Council meeting, adding that this year would be particularly difficult as the first quarter had already seen rising energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product (GDP) in the major industrial sectors.In the first three months, six major industries, including steel, power and non-ferrous, saw a 3.2 percent growth in energy consumption per unit of GDP, Wen said. BEIJING, May 17 (Xinhua) -- China hopes the United States will not exclude China when it loosens its export restrictions, Yao Jian, a spokesman with the Ministry of Commerce said here Monday.Yao's remarks came after the United States said over the weekend it might change its exports control regime.The United States should treat all countries equally and not discriminate against China in its export policies, Yao said at a press conference.U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke said in Hong Kong Sunday "concrete proposals" for changes in the exports control could be expected within the next several months.Locke said the review will help with "the sale of highly sophisticated technology that might be embedded in some of the machines and devices like wind turbines, and the software that might operate these very sophisticated systems."
JI'NAN, March 31(Xinhua) -- A senior Chinese legislator has called for greater efforts to promote women's awareness and ability to safeguard their legitimate rights and interests.Chen Zhili, vice chairwoman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, China's top legislature, made the remarks during a week-long inspection tour of the eastern Shandong Province ending Wednesday.Chen was sent by the top legislature to inspect how local law enforcement agencies implemented the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women.The law, which took effect on Dec. 1, 2005, had played an important role in protecting women's legitimate rights, raising their social status and mobilized them in the country's modernization drive in an active and innovative manner, she said.She called for more efforts to publicize the law to make people aware of the law's significance in protecting women's rights.Chen, also chairwoman of the All-China Women's Federation, said Chinese women faced challenges such as discrimination and a lack of labor rights.
