Even shorter breaks can erase some lessons.A special program at San Diego Unified is helping keep kids stay sharp and excited about learning all year round, even during breaks. It's about making learning a fun, family affair.In a classroom at Rosa Parks Elementary School in City Heights, 7-year-old students Melody and Isabella are getting some one-on-one attention with their lessons. The teachers in this case are Melody's grandmother and Isabella's mom."Everyday they have to read. Everyday they have homework to do," said Anna Gonzalez. She and Maria Theresa Jaume are among a growing number of parents and guardians getting more involved with their kid's education through the "Family Engagement Department" at San Diego Unified."So, I now know how to ask her questions," says Gonzalez, "How to engage her with the reading and things like that.""It solidifies the bond right," says Family Engagement Program manager Pamela King, "It shows kids that education is important." King says the program was established in 2016, inviting families to become partners in their kid's education with tips on how to do it."You're reading a fiction book. You're learning about the characters but what are characters thinking? What's motivating the character? So, going a little deeper."Organizers say it's about connecting with a child's curious nature. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The COVID-19 pandemic has been tough on kids, as they have been stuck at home for school and for play. However, a second-grader from the College Area is putting his time to good use. Seven-year-old Max Kelley came up with an idea to help feed those in need. Max and his younger sister Lucy were playing out in the backyard when he approached his mom with an idea of wanting to start a business."He wanted to do a water recycling business," says his mom Lauren. "So we went around collecting water bottles and cans. We went around to high schools, the bay, and the beach. Every week, we would return it to the recycling center, and we would get the money."And while some kids might take the money to buy something for themselves, Max wanted to do something completely different, and completely unselfish. His first thought was to think of others, and how the money might benefit somebody else."I realized that there are people in need," says Max. "And need food and water." His mother wasn't surprised at all, describing her son as very caring."He came up with the idea himself, and that was to donate the money to a local food bank," Lauren said.So the day before Thanksgiving, Max, Lucy, and the family donated their collection of 8.43 to the Special Delivery Food Bank in Mission Hills. "My family and the kids all got a standing ovation from all the patrons that were there," says Lauren.One check has been delivered, but Max is definitely not finished giving to those in need. As he and Lucy have plans to raise even more money for the food bank. "It made me feel happy," Max said. 1616

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The former Imperial Beach man convicted of molesting and strangling two young boys in 1993 has died of coronavirus, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation said. Scott Thomas Erskine, 57, was sentenced to death in San Diego County in 2004 for the first-degree murders of 9-year-old Jonathan Sellers and 13-year-old Charles Keever.The California Department of Corrections said Erskine died from complications due to the virus at an outside hospital. He was on death row at San Quentin. Both Sellers and Keever disappeared while on a bicycle ride near their South Bay homes. Erskine lured the victims to an igloo-shaped “fort” of brush before molesting and strangling them.In March of 2001, Erskine was serving a 70-year sentence for raping a San Diego woman when newly-tested DNA linked him to the murder of the boys.Erskine also pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder for the Florida slaying of 26-year-old Renee Baker. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The bomb squad was called to the 2300 block of Meadow Lark Drive around 6:20 p.m. after a man reported he found WWII-era Japanese grenades.The man, Mike Carter, is a former Marine and said his training kicked in when he found the three gnarled pieces of metal."I just figured it would be the right thing to do to dispose of them properly and not throw them in the trash," Carter said.He is a hobbyist, buying items like radio-controlled cars, helicopters and other toys, and then he sells them online. One remote control helicopter that he said he paid for is actually valued closer to ,500.This was his second time buying a storage locker and his interest was piqued by a Saturn IV Rocket. With it came a wooden box he put in the bed of his truck.As he worked his way through the items inside, he came across the bombs.Carter said he took a picture of them, then put them back where he found them and called the bomb squad.He said he was never nervous about them exploding, saying they've been around at least 75 years.His street was shut down for about an hour. He apologized for the trouble to his neighbors.When it comes to whether he'll ever buy a storage locker again, he said maybe. There would have to be something worthwhile inside, and he would check the contents before bringing anything home. 1362

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The next attraction to hit Disneyland's "Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge" is set for early next year."Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance" opens at Disneyland on Jan. 17, 2020, and Walt Disney Wold on Dec. 5, 2019, the park announced Thursday.The second ride to hit "Galaxy's Edge" at the Anaheim park promises guests an immersive adventure that will "blur the lines between fantasy and reality."
