A leadership and facilitation company, literally named "momentum," was training corporations around the world when the pandemic hit. And it was clear to financially survive they had to pivot.Jason and Deirdre Maloney created the MagicWrap because they felt the world could use some warmth right now.“There's certainly people who are feeling isolated, feeling alone. Everybody likes a hug," Deirdre Maloney says.And a hug is just what a friend needed. But, when they couldn't find the gift they were looking for, they created it and brought MagicWrap to the market.“There's a concept about a blanket that's about covering yourself, and that's not what we wanted. We wanted that warmth like someone had their arms around you," Jason Maloney said. It even comes with a personalized note, and a pocket to keep it in. The pocket also makes a cell phone easy to walk around with. But before MagicWrap and product manufacturing, the Maloney's were a success in the field of corporate training and facilitation. Their company, Momentum, was booked solid into the fall.“For a company that goes around talking to businesses and they no longer exist. We have no business," said Jason.And their record-breaking year for Momentum, vanished.“It was a shock. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county's average price for a gallon of gas eclipsed for the first time since May 22, according to AAA.The average price of regular gas in San Diego spike 9 cents Saturday and has risen 10 of the last 12 days for a total of 35.8 cents, according to AAA.Since last month, the average price is up more than 40 cents.MAP: Click here to find the cheapest gas in your areaIn California, however, the statewide average sits at .95 a gallon. The national average rests substantially lower, at .65 a gallon.The rise in gasoline prices has been attributed to several issues at refineries in California and just weeks after attacks on Saudi Arabia oil fields. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county's second case of measles this year has been reported, health officials announced Tuesday.The person was fully immunized but came into contact with an 11-month-old San Diego resident who contracted the disease after a recent trip to the Philippines.The second patient may have also exposed the public to measles at two locations, the County of San Diego Health and Human Services said. Those locations are:85? Bakery Café, 3361 Rosecrans Street, on Aug. 15, 16, 17 and 18 from 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.Min Sok Chon Korean Restaurant, 4620 Convoy Street, on Aug. 15 from 6:30 p.m. to 2 a.m.Ralph’s, 3011 Alta View Drive, on Aug. 16 from approximately 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.Officials added the case is under investigation and more locations may be identified later.“If you were at any of the locations at the dates and times listed, you should watch for symptoms of measles and call your health care provider if you show any signs of developing the disease,” said Dean Sidelinger, County interim deputy public health officer. “Measles is a very contagious disease that can be easily spread by coughing, sneezing or being in the same room with an infected person.”Measles can develop about seven to 21 days after exposure to the disease. Early symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, and red eyes. A distinctive red rash also appears one to four days after symptoms appear, starting on the face and head then spreads downward and outward. A person is considered contagious four days before the rash appears.Anyone with symptoms is asked to call their doctor’s office before visiting directly.Complications from measles are more common in children younger than 5 and adults 20 years and older, though the risk is higher with children. Complications include diarrhea, ear infections, and pneumonia. In severe instances, death can occur.Since there is no treatment for measles, the best course is generally bed rest, fluids, and fever-control medication. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The conference and convention industry has been hard-hit by the pandemic.With limitations on gatherings and worry about health, most of the in-person part of the industry came to a standstill."COVID-19 has made this year an extraordinarily challenging and unpredictable year," said President and CEO of the San Diego Convention Center Rip Rippetoe.By Rippetoe's numbers, from March through the end of 2020, they'll have lost more than 100 events at the convention center.Rippetoe said the estimated financial loss to the San Diego region is more than one billion dollars."It doesn't just include us," said Rippetoe. "There are restaurants, hotels, attractions, retail. All the things that people may not realize are affected."It's the same problem for spots up and down the state and across most of the country."We have had zero conferences, I believe since March," said Madonna Inn Marketing Manager Amanda Rich.The Madonna Expo Center in San Luis Obispo can hold around 2,000 people, and prior to COVID-19, they hosted multiple events a week."It's been a huge change for us and our staff," Rich said. "We have a banquet staff that's here specifically for those expo events, and we haven't had any."Virtual EventsWhile in-person locations have suffered, for many conferences, the show still goes on, virtually."A virtual event is not here to replace an in-person event," said Jonathan Kazarian, founder and CEO at Accelevents. "It's not intended to even be modeled exactly like that. A virtual event is its own beast and its own opportunity.”Kazarian said his virtual event platform helps build opportunities for exhibitors to interact with attendees, ways to facilitate all those presentations virtually, and also helps to bring people together."We're working with a lot of software companies now that do these user conferences that maybe in the past they've spent this massive budget on hosting this event once a year and now for a fraction of the cost they can come in and host that event and with the click of a button re-do it month after month,” he said.Kazarian explained that virtual turnout for some companies has been higher than what they were used to seeing in person.But can the event really be the same? 2246
