SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — U.S. Coast Guard officials Wednesday offloaded thousands of pounds of cocaine in San Diego after it was seized in international waters.The narcotics seizures occurred in four separate incidents off the coasts of Mexico, Central, and South America between July and early October.Alert (WMEC-630): Two cases seizing about 4,000 pounds of cocaine;Robert Ward (WPC-1130): One case seizing about 1,500 pounds of cocaine; andSeneca (WMEC-906): One case seizing about 1,400 pounds of cocaine.The narcotics have a street value of more than million, according to the Coast Guard."I am extremely proud of this crew for doing their part to keep these dangerous drugs off the streets," said Cmdr. "The Eastern Pacific Ocean is a challenging environment, especially on a ship that is in her 50th year of service, yet this crew persevered to disrupt the illegal flow of narcotics that fuels instability in Central and South America."The Coast Guard has increased its presence in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Basic as part of its Western Hemisphere Strategy. The area of water is known as a drug transit zone for Central and South America.During the confrontations in international waters, the suspected vessel is initially located and tracked by an allied, military, or law enforcement personnel. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Six new flu deaths have been reported this week in San Diego County as the number of emergency room visits due to the flu remain the same, according to the County Health and Human Services Agency.So far this flu season, 308 people have died from the flu throughout the county. Those who have died range in age from one to 101 years old and almost all had underlying medical conditions.Also last week, 682 lab-confirmed cases of the flu were reported compared to 620 the week before.“The number of influenza cases being reported is still elevated, a sign that the flu is still here and making people sick,” said Wilma Wooten M.D., M.P.H., County public health officer. “People should continue getting vaccinated.”So far this flu season, more than 19,000 lab-confirmed cases of the flu have been reported, compared to nearly 5,000 last season. 874

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Years of emails and persistence finally paid off for a Del Cerro man whose sister died while crossing the street five years ago. Vahid Hamzavi's sister, Mina, was killed while crossing the street at the intersection of Navajo Road and Margerum Avenue. There are crossing signs and buttons, but no designated, marked crosswalk. Hamzavi started asking for a crosswalk at the deadly intersection in 2016. In February, he reached out to 10News because nothing had been done. City Councilmember Scott Sherman's office told us there would be a crosswalk installed by March or April, but still nothing. Last week, Hamzavi called the councilmember's office again. Sherman's office told him they expedited the work order with the Department of Transportation and Storm Water and that the crosswalk would be in place by Friday. On Monday, crews were already out measuring and outlining the design for the crosswalk. The work is expected to be complete on Tuesday.Hamzavi says the wait was worth it and he hopes the intersection will now be safer for those walking in the neighborhood.  1153

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — You've likely seen the bar nestled next to Interstate 5 on India St., just across from the San Diego International Airport.Its plane-shaped sign pointed toward the heavens, glowing neon red as the sun sets on the city.The Aero Club has sat near the airport since 1947, serving residents of the Mission Hills area, factory employees who worked near the airfield, and service members passing through town or deployed to San Diego.MORE places to explore in San DiegoSince it was opened by Mariam Profit in 1947, originally as a place for employees working at the nearby aircraft factory, the bar has been a spot for the everyday worker.It's that colorful past that has added to the bar's history decade after decade, according to bar owner Bill Lutzius."Over the years, different groups come and go. For a long time we had the Coast Guard helicopter pilots coming in all the time," Lutzius recalled. "In the 70s, it was like a cop bar, they called it. I know it was like a biker bar for a while."Lutzius ran through the times of the day when certain clientele roll through: The neighbors first, those heading home from work second, people out for dinner next, the late-night crowd after, then finally the late-night workers just getting off a shift.Behind him, photos of past guests: Locals, military pilots, sailors, an array of aircraft nose art.He recalls the former Aero Club owners as well. One owner used to leave the keys for guests to lock up at the end of the night. Another owner was actually a group of Greyhound bus drivers."A lot of characters came and went ... A bar is an awesome place for the neighborhood because it's sort of a meeting place," Lutzius said. "Everybody catches up on what's going on."While not an owner, Lutzius said one frequent guest used to be a dog. The bar's then-owner would give it a free beer.Today, the bar continues to serve an eclectic crowd, boasting 1,200 different types of whiskey. The wall behind the bar is clad in bottles glistening against a ceiling covered with strings of lights.While the whiskey sign outside the bar reads 900, rest assured there's much more. Lutzius says it just became too much to continue updating it.But how did they all get there? That's on Lutzius."I guess I'm just an obsessive person. It may not even be logical, you know, to do it. But just because of my personality we'd just buy anything we can buy," Lutzius said. "We ended up with about 1,200 whiskeys ... There's lots of good stuff."I just had a vision of a wall of liquor, and that's what we started with ... it just evolved into being whiskey," he added. 2656

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two women who worked as massage therapists at the Grand Del Mar are suing the resort’s parent company, claiming the spa allowed them to be sexually harassed by male clients. Christina Murphy and Madeline Flores made allegations this week of sexual harassment, failure to prevent harassment, wrongful termination, and retaliation against FHR GDM Hotel Management Company LLC. The women’s claims involve two spa clients, Steve Hodsdon and Juan Pablo Mariscal, who the women say made inappropriate advances during scheduled massage appointments. The Grand allowed clients to disregard protocols for keeping themselves covered and repeatedly exposed themselves to therapists, according to a court document filed by the women’s attorney. The male clients also made sexually suggestive comments and gestures and propositioned their therapists for sexual favors, the document said. The legal complaint also details issues Flores and Murphy said they addressed to the spa’s lead massage therapist, manager, director, and human resources representative. The Grand “ignored the complaints and tried to brush them under the rug to keep these male clients coming to the Spa,” the document reads. Both Flores and Murphy used administrative channels to make complaints in Aug. 2018, filing sexual harassment complaints with the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing. On Feb. 26, 2019, Murphy and Flores amended their complaints to include a claim of construction discharge in violation of FEHA or wrongful termination, respectively, and the DFEH closed their cases. The women say they suffered emotional distress, mental anguish, nervousness, grief, anxiety, worry, shock, humiliation, and shame.In a statement sent to 10News, Murphy said, "From the beginning, the Grand Del Mar makes it clear that as massage therapists, we should feel privileged to work on such high-end clientele. This creates a power differential where the guests have all the power and the therapists are powerless to challenge inappropriate conduct. The sexual intimidation by these male clients caused me so much fear – fear of what these men were capable of and fear of retaliation by the Grand for reporting them. But I had to speak up to protect myself and my coworkers. When it became obvious that the Grand was not going to protect me, I did the only thing I knew would keep this from happening to me again – I quit."Flores said in the same statement, "What happened to me and Christina never should have happened. The Grand should have taken action to stop this harassment the first time it received complaints about these men. But the Grand did nothing and we ultimately paid the price. The Grand made me feel unsafe at work when they were supposed to be the ones to protect me. This was a profession that I went to school for and that I loved, and now, I have lost my passion for it. I was scared to come forward but ultimately, I felt I had to come forward because I do not want what happened to me to happen to other massage therapists."Their attorney, Alreen Haeggquist, with Haeggquist & Eck, LLP said, “The law is simple and straightforward: an employer has a duty to protect its employees from harassment. But in the face of multiple detailed complaints by its female massage therapists over a period of years, the Grand has chosen to instead protect the perpetrators. The Grand has made a clear choice: the tens of thousands of dollars its predatory male clients spend at the Hotel is far more important than the safety of its female employees. For the right amount of money, the Grand will ignore clients who remove all draping, grind on the massage table, expose their erect penises and ask its therapists for prostate massages. Over the past few years, the Grand has refused to accept any responsibility for its systemic failures. They have had multiple opportunities to do the right thing and protect their female massage therapists – and time after time, they’ve failed to do so. Well, time’s up.”The plaintiffs believe no fewer than six massage therapists may have been victimized, the court document says. The hotel responded in a statement of its own, "Fairmont Grand Del Mar acts diligently to investigate employee complaints and is confident that there was no wrongdoing by the hotel in connection with this matter. The safety of our guests and our colleagues is a top priority and providing a healthy work environment remains paramount.
