ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) — Opening a new small business in the middle of this pandemic is a risky move, but San Diegans are doing it. Candles on Tap in downtown Encinitas is taking the chance."Today is a big, nerve-wracking, exciting day but we are opening to the public," CEO and co-founder Chantel Johnson said. She and CFO and co-founder Marcus Wandell are hopeful about their new venture. "The feature event is the scent bar where you pull up a chair and pour your own blend," said Wandell. Johnson added, "We are a custom scent bar so when people come in, they’re able to hand pour their own soy candles, diffusers, and fragrance sprays and they get to choose from over 90 scents." Wandell says some of his personal favorites in their shop include a scent called "old books" and they also have a "cannabis" smell.The two are well aware of what they’re getting into. "We're opening in the middle of a pandemic and it's a brick and mortar store so what could go wrong, right?" Wandell said jokingly.Yet, they say they see this time as the perfect opportunity. “There's pent up energy and demand to get out and do something as long as it’s safe so we're seizing on that need in the community for folks to find an experience to do with their loved ones and friends,” says Wandell.The pair are not alone. The U.S. Census reports almost 3.3 million business applications have been filed this year which is up 700,000 from this time last year. There were reportedly more than 1.6 million quarterly applications. In California alone, week 43 saw almost 9,000 applications which is a 25% increase from this time last year.“Some of our friends [say we’re] so brave. This is a bold move but everyone's really excited for us,” added Johnson.Candles on Tap is located at 687 S Coast Hwy 101 Unit 155 in Encinitas. Families still returning home to San Diego after surviving the deadly earthquake in Mexico City.Jorge Jiron and his wife are back in the US after nearly 24 hours of chaos. "when it hit it started shaking real bad," he said. He was in a building that sits on the side of a canyon nearly 12 floors up. Suddenly, everything started to move. "\We were close to the exit, on your way out it is shaking hard but you're really paying attention to everybody and their instructions to get out," said Jiron. "Then, that's when you realize everything is shaking, the windows are shaking the hard, the electric poles are really moving, then you see people that are nervous."The 7.1 magnitude quake was crumbling buildings, shattering windows and sending debris flying through the air. "You're walking you're moving, so you don't realize how bad it is until you're actually standing in one place and you see everything moving around you. When you realize it's already stopped, it takes seconds."They were supposed to fly back to the US Tuesday night, but there was no way out. "The main road that goes to the airport was completely packed with cars. A 30-minute drive would have been 5 or 6 hours," said Jiron.  1241

(KGTV) - City planners in Encinitas are seeking public input about the creation of 10 new pedestrian train crossings.The city currently only has six legal crossings, though much of the train tracks are unobstructed and can be crossed illegally.“Safety is one of our utmost concerns,” said Diane Langager, principal planner with the city.She said she has been working on the crossing project for about two years. In addition to safety, she said the city wants to make the area more accessible by walking and biking.“We’re doing everything we can to increase multi-modal transportation in the city,” she said.They have identified different locations where crossings are possible but want input from residents to see what their priorities are. 766

ELIZABETH, Colo. — Police in Elizabeth, Colorado are investigating an unprovoked attack in the midst of an 8th-grade classroom at Elizabeth Middle School.Cell phone video posted on social media shows a male student walk over to another male student and repeatedly punch him. The attack occurred sometime this month.The attack appears to have been planned. In the video, the boy who instigated the altercation is heard asking the person recording the video if he “should do it right now?”Elizabeth police told Scripps station KMGH in Denver the boy has since been arrested for assault and sent to a juvenile assessment center. Police aren’t saying much about what prompted the fight because it’s a juvenile case.The school district isn’t answering questions on whether the student has had disciplinary actions in the past. The school district they sent out a letter to parents the day of the attack and released the following statement. 968

European Union and British negotiators are closing in on a trade deal with only a disagreement over fishing rights in U.K. waters remaining, After resolving a few remaining fair competition issues, negotiators were down to dealing with fishing quotas and transition terms as they worked to secure a deal for a post-Brexit relationship by an end-of-year deadline. Sources on both sides said the long and difficult negotiations were in their final stretch and an announcement of a deal could come Thursday morning.
