CORONADO, Calif., (KGTV)— Coronado residents are split on whether a fenced-in, off-leash dog park would be a welcome addition, next to a childcare facility and the Coronado School District building. The district office is located on 6th Street, just east of Naval Air Station North Island. Coronado’s famous dog beach is where dogs can be dogs: run freely on the sand, splash around, and play with their humans. But soon, something similar could be coming about a mile north on the island. Last week, the Coronado Unified School District and the City of Coronado announced that they are negotiating changes to their Facilities Joint Use Agreement. A portion of the 3/4 acre grassy area, between the district office and the childcare facility on 6th Street could be converted into a fenced-in dog park.“I think a lot of the homeowners and parents were blindsided by this,” Emily Foster said. Foster lives across the street.  The mother of three small children believes having a portion of the grass become a dog park would be unsanitary.“We’re concerned about run-off through the shared sprinkler system of animal waste,” Foster said. “We’re concerned about fleas and ticks.” With a smaller space, Foster believes her kids will not be able to play like they once did. No more Jog-athons. No more parachutes. No more fun.“It’s the only grassy area where Village Elementary kids have for PE and recess,” Foster said. “Everything has been replaced by blacktop or artificial turf.”The school district’s proposal explains that the dog park will only be one-third of the entire green space, about one-quarter of an acre, with the entrance on the school district side. A double fence will separate the children's green space from the dog park. Plus, the City of Coronado will contribute ,000 to the district every year to maintain the area. That money will go directly back to Coronado kids.“If the elected officials of the school board didn’t think this was in the best interest of the students, I don’t see that they would be doing this,” Holidais Moreira said. Moreira has been working for two years to get a fenced-in dog park in the city, especially for her 13-year-old rescue, Happy Kapi. Kapi’s joints are not what they used to be, so the dog beach is not an option. A ride to the Cays dog park is not far. But she said she would rather take her dog to a dog park that is fenced-in.The district is now asking Council for a one-year trial period to evaluate the use of impact on the community.“Every park allows children. Not every one allows dogs,” Moreira said. “As a resident and a taxpayer, I see no reason why those of us who have dogs should not have the same rights as the other people who have kids and think those parks should be only reserved for children.” “People of Coronado want a dog park, a safe place that their dogs can run and play,” Foster agreed. “But we should look at other options in the city where that can happen, where it’s not a detriment to the children.”The Coronado City Council will be discussing the issue at their next council meeting on Tuesday, August 21 at 4 pm. 3193

Claims that U.S. voter registration rolls have been hacked and leaked are false and were created by malicious actors trying to spread disinformation ahead of the 2020 election, the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said Monday.In a press release published on the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center, the agencies said they have "no information suggesting any cyberattack on U.S. election infrastructure," and added that registration rolls or any ballots already cast have not been compromised.The FBI says foreign actors and cybercriminals are spreading false reports about cyberattacks affecting election integrity in "an attempt to manipulate public opinion, discredit the electoral process, and undermine confidence in U.S. democratic institutions."According to the press release, U.S. voter information is publicly available and can be purchased, and while hackers have obtained some of that information in the past, the data "did not impact the voting process or the integrity of election results."Ahead of the 2016 election, Russia used social media to create politically-oriented groups and spread misinformation. The FBI has warned that Russia and other countries are attempting to do the same thing in 2020.In order to avoid misinformation online, the FBI suggests:Seeking out information from trustworthy sources, verifying who produced the content, and considering their intent.Relying on state and local election officials for information about voter registration databases and voting systems.Viewing early, unverified claims with a healthy dose of skepticism.Verifying through multiple reliable sources any reports about compromises of voter information or voting systems, and consider searching for other reliable sources before sharing such information via social media or other avenues.Reporting potential election crimes — such as disinformation about the manner, time, or place of voting — to the FBI.Making use of in-platform tools offered by social media companies for reporting suspicious posts that appear to be spreading false or inconsistent information about voter information or voting systems. 2164

CORONADO, Calif. (KGTV) — Thousands of sailors left Naval Air Base Coronado Friday afternoon, to embark on a seven-month deployment to the Indo-Pacific Region. Its colossal presence is intimidating. Impressive. Indisputable.“We comprise the most mobile, most capable, and most lethal fighting force on the entire planet,” Captain Brett Crozier, Commanding Officer of the USS Theodore Roosevelt, said. But the strength of the ship isn’t in the hardware. It’s in the 6,000 sailors who will call it home for the next seven months. Friday is their farewell to their families. “Already I’ve been crying like all day,” Stephanie Hastings said. The young mother of two is saying goodbye to her husband, Christopher, for the first time. This is the 26-year-old’s first deployment. Emotions overcome her, even though her toddlers do not understand. “He [three-year-old Mason] doesn’t really know what’s going on. He said he wants to go to Target today. He doesn’t want to come here,” Hastings laughed. But long-time military wife Fama Nyassi has no tears. She and her two daughters are sending off their father, Ousom, for the fifth time. “Daddy is not around, but Mommy is here. I will take care of everything!” Nyassi said. For the next seven months, the sailors will travel to the Indo-Pacific region to provide maritime security and regional safety. For EMC Nyassi, it’s comforting to know that his wife has got his back at home. “I can’t thank her enough. She’s the rock of the family. I can’t thank her enough,” EMC Nyassi said. Those left behind say their strength comes from their love for their spouse and for their country. “I tell him all the time that I am really proud,” Hastings said of her husband. “So proud of him. He’s the hero of the family,” Nyassi said of her husband. The last time the USS Roosevelt left for a seven-month deployment was to support “Operations Inherent Resolve” and “Freedom’s Sentinel” between October 2017 and May 2018. Congress returned to work this week with two major things on its plate: pass a budget bill to avoid a government shutdown and get to work on another stimulus bill legislators have been talking about for months.Congress has until Dec. 11 to pass a budget bill, but there is no timeline on another stimulus package, as both Democrats and Republicans have failed to agree to terms on one.“I just want, more than anything, to be represented by people that understand,” said Ryan Nisly.In March, Nisly lost his job bartending. Only a few weeks later, he found a new one. But after the most recent round of shutdowns in his home state of Colorado, he has been relegated to working 5-10 hours a week.“I’ve had some bad moments,” said Nisly. “No matter your amount of resolve, it’s not enough sometimes if the entire deck is stacked against you.”Nisly, like so many millions of Americans, says he has been waiting for Congress to act and pass another stimulus bill. Since the CARES Act pumped more than trillion into the U.S. economy in late March, including a ,200 stimulus check to most Americans, Congress has stumbled to give any sort of meaningful relief to those, like Nisly, who need it.The Economic Policy Institute estimates between now and 2022, trillion in relief is needed, with an additional 0 billion annually through the end of 2024.“Americans could hardly be more cynical about government and its inability to act and this is a perfect example,” said Howard Gleckman, a fiscal policy expert at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.Gleckman says despite the need for financial help, he thinks the prospect of a new stimulus bill, with individual stimulus checks, is bleak at best until President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office on Jan. 20.He says Democrats and Republicans are having trouble agreeing on where money from a stimulus should go. It’s not about substance it’s all about politics,” said Gleckman. “I think the best bet is that they’ll make an effort at this [and] fail.
