SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer responded Friday after Governor Gavin Newsom issued new stay-at-home orders for the region.Faulconer said in a statement on Twitter that local businesses aren’t being treated fairly under the new guidance.“Restaurants made good faith efforts to comply with COVID rules. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s no mistake, the Marriott Marquis in Downtown San Diego is playing host to bees on the roof, and it’s all for the benefit of local business. The hive highlights a growing trend called urban beekeeping and the popularity of the practice is creating a lot of buzz. In 2012, the City of San Diego amended its municipal code to allow some residents, along with community gardens and retail farms to keep two beehives. The practice has several benefits, according to the city, including access to fresh, natural honey. The city says urban beekeeping also reduces the number of aggressive Africanized bees in the vicinity of the docile honeybee hive. Beekeeping is also known to reduce carbon footprint due to local production, however, there are some things to be aware of. The primary risk of beekeeping is getting stung. The city says if you plan to keep bees, you can count on bee stings every now and then. Before deciding to keep bees, the City of San Diego urges dialogue with neighbors. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Mayor Kevin Faulconer condemned Governor Gavin Newsom’s amendment to the California sex offender law in a tweet Saturday morning.The mayor said he is “appalled” by the changes, which give judges discretion on whether or not to list someone as a sex offender for having oral or anal sex with a minor, the Associated Press reported.“As a parent I’m appalled that last night our governor signed a law maintaining a 24-year-old can have sex with a 14-year-old and it not be considered predatory,” Faulconer said.RELATED: California governor signs bill changing sex offender law“An adult who commits ANY sex act on a minor 10 years younger must be registered a sex offender. Law must be changed,” he continued.The bill does not allow statutory rape or pedophilia.The San Francisco Chronicle reported Friday that the bill, SB145, was signed by Newsom without comment. The bill gives judges discretion over sex-offender registration in cases involving teenagers between the ages of 14 to 17, and adults who are less than 10 years older, the Chronicle said.The author of the bill Senator Scott Wiener, from San Fransisco replied to Faulconer's tweet, "Mr. Mayor - I'd always been under the impression that you were a supporter of the LGBTQ community. This bill does nothing more than treat LGBTQ young people the same way we've treated straight young people since 1944. Why would you oppose simple equality?"The bill changes antiquated language that protects a man in a relationship with an underage woman, extending it to members of the LGBTQ community.The bill goes into effect on January 1, 2021. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hundreds showed up to walk in the annual Friendship Walk at Liberty Station on Sunday. This year, the walk was also in honor of Lori Kaye, the only fatal victim in the Poway Synagogue shooting in April. Friends say Kaye was a long-time supporter of the Friendship Circle, a non-profit that provides support and friendship to special needs individuals and their families. Last year, Kaye donated all of the shirts for everyone at the walk. This year, everyone wore shirts that said "Walk for Lori" The walk raised over ,000 for The Friendship Circle. 581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Local research organizations and San Diego County are teaming with the CDC to expand the genome sequencing of COVID-19. That data gives county leaders important information to drive decision-making to help slow and control the spread of the virus.“The virus is constantly evolving and trying to figure out the best way to spread through our population. And is it does that, it changes a little bit,” said Dr. Louise Laurent a professor at UC San Diego, which is part of the team, along with Scripps Research.Laurent says that studying changes in the virus can help identify which cases are connected to each other and which are not. The county can use that information to understand what measures are working, where there are significant outbreaks, and whether new measures are needed to stop those outbreaks.The county’s top epidemiologist, Dr. Eric McDonald, tells ABC 10News that the data shows that through testing and contract tracing, efforts to control outbreaks have generally been effective. “It looks like many of the instances of individuals who are infected don’t result in too many other infections. We don’t have lots of big clusters of the same exact strain,” McDonald said.The data also shows that while the restrictions and actions taken by the county have been effective in controlling outbreaks, COVID-19 continues to spread in San Diego through travel. “What we found is that San Diego has been hit many different times and viruses from other places have come to San Diego,” Laurent said. “We don’t want to be an isolated place. We want to interact, right? We’re just that kind of place. It makes us vibrant. It makes us an interesting place to be. But that also makes us vulnerable.”The research team recently received a .5 million contract from the CDC to expand its work. 1823
