LOS ANGELES, Oct. 6 (Xinhua) -- Turner Network Television (TNT) said it will re-air the Emmy Awards-nominated 1999 television movie "Pirates of Silicon Valley" Thursday night as a tribute to Steve Jobs, Apple's creative co-founder who died overnight.According to the cable television channel, the original drama will be shown at 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Pacific Time.Adapted from a bestseller "Fire in the Valley: The Making of The Personal Computer" by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, the 95-minute made-for-television docudrama follows the fascinating and unforgettable race between technology rivals Apple Computers and Microsoft, two fledgling computer empires which have literally changed the world in many areas.It stars "ER" and "Falling Skies" actor Noah Wyle as Steve Jobs, Anthony Michael Hall, who played the leading role in the USA Network series "The Dead Zone," as Microsoft founder Bill Gates and Joey Slotnick ("Nip/Tuck") as Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak.The film debuted on TNT in June 1999 and went on to garner five Emmy nominations including Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries of Movie.Wyle impersonated Jobs at the 1999 Macworld conference and delivered the opening remarks. BEIJING, Oct. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- There is no evidence to prove that using a cell phone can increase the risks of brain cancer, suggested a lastest study by Danish researchers.To arrive at the result, the researchers examined the health records from 1990 to 2007 for 358,403 Danish cell phone plan subscribers.They found that among people using cell phones for as long as 13 years or more, the cancer risks were almost the same as for non-subscribers.The finding, published in the British Medical Journal last week, alleviated the fear among the world's 5 billion cell phone users.Five months ago, a statement from the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) sparked fear in cell phone users around the world because it said that cell phone use might cause brain cancer.However, the finding could not rule out the risk of brain cancer triggered by heavy use of cell phones, admitted Patrizia Frei of the Danish Cancer Society's Institute of Cancer Epidemiology, lead author of the study.Frei added, cited by CNN, "There are still some open questions, about greater amounts of use, and about the effects on children."The IARC did not give formal response to the study, but it offered some ways for cell phone consumers to reduce possible risks months ago.Texting and using hands-free sets for voice calls lower exposure to potentially harmful radiation, compared to device-to-ear voice calls, by at least 10-fold, IARC stated, reported by the New York Daily News.

BEIJING, Jan. 05 (Xinhuanet) -- Tighter licensing and banning unlicensed food processors are two measures needed to improve the poor quality of cooked food in Guangzhou markets, says a new proposal.The proposal, to be presented to the Guangzhou committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, notes that producers of unpacked cooked food currently only need to obtain a food circulation permit.Many of them process food in unlicensed workshops with poor sanitation, and some producers even use substandard materials in food processing.The annual session of the conference opens on Tuesday.Recent tests of unpacked cooked food found that of 100 samples of meat, flour-based food, preserved vegetables, soybean products and algae products, only 38 passed the inspection.No cold dried bean curd or cold algae products passed the tests, which were carried out at seven supermarkets in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, by the city's consumers' commission.Excessive microorganisms were the main reason for failing the tests. Fifty-five samples contained excessive coliform and 12 had golden staph.Meanwhile, in tests of unpacked cooked food at supermarkets in Guangzhou by the city's commerce authority in the third quarter of last year, only 28 of the 71 samples passed the tests. In addition to excessive bacteria, excessive use of coloring agents was also spotted.The situation at other markets, such as wet markets, is more worrying, says the proposal.It also suggests that separate cooked food processing areas be built in local markets, with closer scrutiny over them.Standards concerning the processing, storage and transport of those food products remain unspecified.Some supermarkets, on the other hand, have been lax in selecting suppliers and failed to install protective facilities in shelving the food.Given that a number of government agencies are involved in food safety work, the proposal suggests that a shared information platform be built to prevent loopholes.The food associations should also play a bigger role in supervising food enterprises, it says."Since cooked food goes through the production, transport and shelving steps, it is hard to guarantee the quality. WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- The launch of the Mars Science Laboratory, which contains the car-sized Curiosity rover, has been delayed by a day to Nov. 26, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced Monday.The delay will "allow time for the team to remove and replace a flight termination system battery," NASA said in a statement.The launch is now scheduled for 10:02 a.m. (1502 GMT) on Saturday from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida. The launch window remains open for one hour and 43 minutes.Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any previous Mars rover. Its 10 science instruments include two for ingesting and analyzing samples of powdered rock delivered by the rover's robotic arm.Scheduled to land on the Mars in August 2012, the one-ton rover will examine Gale Crater during a nearly two-year prime mission. Curiosity will land near the base of a layered mountain three miles (five kilometers) high inside the crater. SHIJIAZHUANG, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 3.48 million people in rural areas of north China's Hebei Province have been given access to safe drinking water this year, a local official said Saturday.Authorities in the province have invested more than 1.7 billion yuan (270 million U.S. dollars) so far in 2011 in building drinking water infrastructure, said Liang Jianyi, deputy director of the Hebei Provincial Department of Water and Resources.More than 32 million rural people in Hebei, especially in mountainous and coastal areas, had long suffered from unsafe water, with problems including high fluorine and alkaline contents, Liang said.From 2005 to 2010, the provincial authorities put almost 6 billion yuan into providing safe drinking water for 13 million rural residents, he added.
