STOCKHOLM, April 30 (Xinhua) -- Sustainability expert, Professor Mohan Munasinghe who is also director general of Sustainable Consumption Institute at University of Manchester said China's development is more sustainable than the U.S. and Europe when they were in the similar development stage.In a recent interview with Xinhua in the Swedish capital city Stockholm, Munasinghe who was also Co-winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace as Vice Chairman of IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) said sustainable development meant to balance the economic and social development with the damage of environment."What China proposes to develop harmonious society and especially to harmonize economic and social development and the environment is a way towards sustainable development," Munasinge said."China is more hopeful because stainability index shows that China's development is much more sustainable than the U.S. and Europe when they had similar development stage when per capita income was around 3,000 U.S. dollars he said."The second reason is that the discipline in eastern culture especially in China and Japan, you have a discipline to mix the social changes with economic development, you need a lot of discipline to bring about these changes," he said, adding that China's way of experiment in changes is very good."China often implements a pilot program and if it is good, it then promotes it in other areas and finally in the whole country and if you fail, then forget it and try new ways, this way you make the changes more beneficial than make it a total failure," commended Munasinge."China has the social capital that you make your society a consensus building society, this is Chinese social capital. BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang urged the boosting of efforts to prevent and control the hand-foot-mouth disease (HFMD) nationwide as the illness re-emerges in parts of the country."Spring and summer is a peak period for infectious diseases. Currently, preventing and controlling various infectious diseases such as the hand-foot-mouth disease is a key task," Li said Wednesday at a meeting on a nationwide health campaign.At least five children died of HFMD and another 9,863 cases have been reported in central China's Henan Province as of March 23. The local government has asked kindergartens and schools across the province to step up health checks of children.Li urged the acceleration of research into vaccines and drugs for the disease and a focus on prevention and control work in rural areas for the most vulnerable groups.HFMD is a common illness mainly affecting children under the age of 10. It usually starts with a slight fever which is followed by blisters and ulcers in the mouth and rashes on the hands and feet. It is spread through contact with saliva or feces of the infected.Li stressed related departments across the country should step up work to prevent and control A/H1N1 influenza with emergency plans and ample storage of vaccines, drugs and equipment.Li added that major events, including the 2010 Shanghai Expo, will be the key events for disease control and prevention.

BEIJING, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao's upcoming visit to Brazil, Venezuela and Chile will be significant to furthering comprehensive development of China-Latin America relations, a senior Chinese diplomat said on Wednesday.Vice Foreign Minister Li Jinzhang told a press briefing that Hu will pay a state visit to Brazil and attend the second summit of the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China - in Brasilia from April 14 to 17, make a state visit to Venezuela from April 17 to 18 and a working visit to Chile on April 18."China and Latin American countries, all as developing countries, share extensive common interests. China has always attached great importance to its relations with these countries," Li said.China-Latin America relations have maintained a good momentum of comprehensive and sustained growth with increased political mutual trust, expansion of cooperation and more frequent cultural exchanges, he said.Hu's visit will be made at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Venezuelan President Hugo Rafael Chavez Frias and Chilean President Sebastian Pinera.Hu will hold talks with President Lula and meet other leaders on furthering China-Brazil ties and boosting cooperation on major global issues, Li saidThe two countries will ink a joint action plan from 2010 to 2014 and agreements in the fields of culture, energy, finance, science and technology as well as product quality inspection, he said. BOAO, Hainan, April 11 (Xinhua) -- Entrepreneurs and economists of the Chinese mainland and Taiwan have considered the expected signing of a cross-Strait economic pact as a top priority in further development of their trade relations.The long-awaited Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement (ECFA), aiming to normalize mainland-Taiwan economic ties and bring the two economies closer, is hoped to be signed by the end of June.Fredrick Chien, chief advisor of Taiwan's Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation, said here Sunday the ECFA will be an "extremely important" agreement to strengthen future development of cross-Strait relations."As long as we make this stride, the cross-Strait economic and trade exchanges will get much closer," Chien said at the Boao Forum for Asia annual conference which concluded Sunday in southern island province of Hainan.He jointly presided over a round-table meeting with Dai Xianglong, chairman of the mainland's National Council for Social Security Fund.
