PHOENIX, Ariz. -- Officials have made an arrest in the cold case of Alissa Turney, a 17-year-old girl who went missing in Arizona in 2001.The Maricopa County Attorney's Office announced second-degree murder charges against Alissa's stepfather, Michael Roy Turney, according to a press conference Thursday.Alissa went missing at the end of the school year in 2001 and was first reported as a runaway by Michael Turney, according to officials.Michael called in the runaway report, telling authorities that she had left a note and was going to California.In 2008, new information was brought to light and officials began a criminal investigation into Alissa's disappearance. Officials conducted 200 interviews with coworkers, friends, and family.When a search warrant was issued on Michael's residence, they discovered a bombing plot, at which point he was brought into custody in 2008.Officials say Michael took a plea deal and served 10 years in prison in the bombing plot, unrelated to Alissa's disappearance.He was arrested Thursday afternoon by police in Mesa in connection to her presumed death. Police detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a skydiver in Zephyrhills, Florida.Management at Skydive City told Tampa-based WFTS, the skydiver was experienced and had a properly working parachute and reserve parachute. "(The skydiver) hit the ground at full speed and were killed on impact, instantly," said General Manager TK Hayes. Hayes said neither the main parachute or reserve were pulled. It was the second to last jump of the night. The skydiver broke away from a group dive, landing at the edge of the 100-acre property. "It's definitely a mystery," said Hayes. "We've had a preliminary investigation with the detectives out there and looked at the equipment, we can't see anything particularly wrong with it."Hayes said the skydiver was not using an automatic activation device, which deploys the parachute at 700 feet if still in free-fall. That piece of equipment is not required for licensed skydivers. "It's just a sad day for the community, there's nothing we can do about that now that that's happened other than hopefully we learned something from it," he said. Skydive City sees about 70,000 jumps per year. According to Hayes, it has been a couple years since they've experienced a fatal jump. At this time, police have not released the skydiver's name, pending next of kin notification.  1424

Police in North Haven, Connecticut have arrested a man they said implied he was going to hand out candy filled with poison to trick-or-treaters.Detectives received an anonymous tip about alarming statements made by 57-year-old Ronald Przybylo.Upon their investigation, police said they found disturbing posts and videos that led them to believe the man was possibly dangerous.Police said Przybylo allegedly posted comments implying that he planned to provide candy filled with rat poison to trick-or-treaters.Przybylo also reportedly referenced several mass killings from around the country and “dubbed himself the Halloween Lunatic,” police said.When officers responded to his home, they found floors and furniture to be completely covered with animal urine and feces.The North Haven Animal Control and the Quinnipiac Valley Health Department responded and removed three dogs, three cats, and an Amazon African Bird.Ronald Przybylo was arrested and charged with second-degree breach of peace, seven counts of animal cruelty, and was held on a ,000 bond.Maryellen Przybylo was also arrested and charged with seven counts of animal cruelty and was released on a ,500 bond.She’s expected to appear in court on Nov. 9. 1233

Our nation’s veterans and Gold Star families will receive free access for life to any national park, national wildlife refuge, and other federal lands.Beginning Veterans Day, which is Wednesday, the Department of Interior said they would permanently waive the entrance fees for them.“The Trump Administration is committed to honoring American patriots – the men and women who have served in our armed forces,” said Secretary Bernhardt in a press release. “With the utmost respect and gratitude, we are granting veterans and Gold Star Families free access to the iconic and treasured lands they fought to protect starting this Veterans Day and every single day thereafter.”To get the free pass, which is called America the Beautiful, veterans must provide a form of identification that would show they served in the armed forces or in the United States National Guard and Reserves.Gold star families are next of kin of a member of the United States Armed Forces who lost his or her life in a war, an international terrorist attack, or a military operation outside of the US while serving in the armed forces, the department said.With the pass, 2,000 federal recreation sites on more than 400 million acres of public lands, including Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Arches, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial, will be accessed.The department already waives fees for active-duty military service members. 1403
