SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Speaking from the charred landscape ravaged by one of California's largest current wildfires, Gov. Gavin Newsom strongly asserted that more has to be done to battle the "climate emergency."Newsom toured the devastation at a park in Oroville, Calif., that was burned by the North Complex fire. Since the fire began on Aug. 18, the fire has burned 252,534 acres through Plumas, Butte, and Yuba counties and is 23% contained.It's one of 28 major wildfires burning across California, according to CAL FIRE.During his tour, the governor shot back at the debate over climate change and pledge to continue the state's efforts at lower carbon emissions. Newsom cited August being the state's hottest month in state history and annual drought conditions throughout the state."I'm a little exhausted that we have to continue to debate this issue. This is a climate, damn, emergency. This is real. And it's happening," Newsom said on Friday. "This is the perfect storm. It is happening in unprecedented ways. Year in and year out. "And you can exhaust yourself with your ideological 'BS' by saying, 'well, 100 years ago, we should've done this or that.' All that may be true. And I'm not going to suggest for a second that the forest management practices in the state of California over a century-plus have been ideal. But that's one point. But it's not 'the' point."Newsom said the current "mega-fires" are fueled by "mega-droughts" that have impacted the state."There's something else going on, not just bad practices over the last century related to forestry," Newsom said.Friday, Newsom signed AB2147 into law, which will allow inmates from the state's inmate firefighter program to become firefighters after completing their prison time. CAL FIRE trains minimum-security prison inmates who volunteer to perform the same work as their crews. Volunteer inmates also perform conservation and community service projects while not fighting fires, according to CAL FIRE. According to the Associated Press, inmates are paid per hour while on the frontlines and per day when they're not on duty. Inmates normally have their sentences reduces while participating in the program, the AP says.Previously, volunteer inmates were not eligible to become firefighters after serving time. 2299

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego will light up landmarks this week in honor of the 100th anniversary of the women's suffrage movement.San Diego's convention center Sails Pavilion and Balboa Park's California Tower will be illuminated in purple and gold to commemorate the passage of the 19th Amendment starting Monday until Friday."This week San Diego will be illuminated in colorful lights to celebrate the single largest expansion of voting rights in American history," Mayor Kevin L. Faulconer said. "Millions of women can cast their ballots in November because our nation had the collective will to enshrine in our constitution this fundamental right. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego's Maritime Museum is giving families the chance to spend the night on the seas — but stay in San Diego.The museum's "Family Overnight" program offers a stay aboard the Star of India, the oldest active sailing ship in the world. Families will embark on imaginary voyage learning about the lives and times of the India's passengers in the 19th century.Instructors will be in character and in costume, as they teach various ship-centric tasks like moving cargo and raising sails. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- State health officials are working to catch up on a large backlog of COVID-19 tests.According to Marik Ghaly, California'sCalifornia's Health and Human Services Secretary, a server outage on July 25 led to a delay in lab records coming into the reporting system.Ghaly says they also realized they weren't getting data from one of their largest commercial labs for five days, between July 31 and August 4, because the state neglected to renew a certification."We apologize. You deserve better. The Governor demands better of us,"" Ghaly said during a Friday virtual news conference.Ghaly says there are an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 tests that need to be processed, and that will happen in the next 24 to 48 hours.The system accepts results for other reportable diseases, so the records have to sorted, Ghaly said, though adding that a majority will be COVID-19 test samples."We expect that over the next 24 to 48 hours that the backlog that's between 250 to 300 thousand cases will be resolved giving us a better sense of the number of tests that were delayed," Ghaly said. "We are reporting this data to the counties based on the date the specimen was collected so we can attribute it to the appropriate date."Ghaly points out the state froze the county monitoring list last week, so the problem should have affected any decision-making policies. He also says it doesn't change any state trends with case rates, which he says are still trending downwards slightly.However, it's unclear how the delay in reporting will impact contact tracing.The Governor has ordered an investigation into the error. 1629

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Several people were hospitalized after they reportedly fell ill at a Sorrento Valley pharmaceutical company.San Diego Fire-Rescue crews were called to 6769 Mesa Ridge just before 2 p.m. Tuesday to reports that a 60-year-old man was passed out outside the business, Inovio Pharmaceuticals.Bystanders reportedly began CPR and used a defibrillator on the man.Crews say that additional people were transported after falling ill. In all, two people transported themselves to Scripps Memorial Hospital while two others were transported by emergency crews.Their conditions are not known at this time.SDFD said they believe the victims became sick after eating food brought in by an employee.  727
