SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An Animal Planet TV series focusing on the San Diego Zoo and the zoo's Safari Park will premiere Saturday, offering audiences a behind-the-scenes view of the zoo's daily activities."The Zoo: San Diego" will debut with two one-hour episodes titled "Welcome to Our World" and "New Day for an Old Tortoise." The series will follow animal care staff members, veterinarians, scientists and researchers at the zoo, Safari Park and the zoo's Institute for Conservation Research.The first episode will feature a baby klipspringer's birth and first days at the zoo, research into why a species of pit viper is having spinal issues and conservation work on the California condor population. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - As the Valley Fire burned for a fifth straight day, blackening thousands of acres in rural eastern San Diego County, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra issued a consumer alert today warning that charging excessive prices for goods and services is illegal during a state of emergency.The state's price gouging law holds that it is unlawful to raise the price of items more than 10% after a state of emergency has been declared.Violations of the price gouging statute could carry penalties of up to one year in county jail and/or a ,000 fine. Civil enforcement actions could also include up to ,500 per violation and other monetary penalties.As of midday Wednesday, the Valley Fire had burned more than 17,000 acres and was 11% contained. It was one of many blazes ravaging the state, including the El Dorado Fire in San Bernardino County and the Creek Fire in Fresno, Madera and Mariposa counties.``Multiple fires burning throughout the state have forced evacuations for thousands of California residents. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Thursday publicly identified a 21-year-old man who was killed when the sports car he was driving crashed off a South Bay freeway connector.Jose Cruz Perez of Logan Heights lost control of the blue Nissan 350Z coupe while trying to merge onto eastbound state Route 54 from northbound Interstate 5 in National City at high speed shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Alerted by a witness who saw Perez's vehicle veer off the connector and plunge down a steep embankment just south of the Sweetwater River, California Highway Patrol officers searched the area but were unable to find the car or driver.About four hours after the accident, a worker at a shipbuilding yard alongside the freeway ramp found the wrecked Nissan in a mud pond with Perez's body partially ejected from the driver's side door, the CHP reported. 910

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge granted a preliminary injunction Friday sought by Hall of Fame horse trainer Jerry Hollendorfer against the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, which banned Hollendorfer from participation in the wake of a spate of horse deaths.Hollendorfer, 73, was banned last month from Del Mar and sought legal intervention to allow him to participate at this summer's racing season.He argued that Del Mar officials did not provide an adequate reason for precluding him from racing. The complaint alleges that he was notified on June 28 that he wouldn't be assigned stalls because of "PR risks and considerations."RELATED: 2 horses killed in collision during training at Del Mar RacetrackIn his written ruling, Judge Ronald F. Frazier ruled that Del Mar "arbitrarily" denied Hollendofer's stall application without providing him a hearing on the matter.In court, Frazier noted that there was no definitive link tying Hollendorfer to the horses' deaths.Thirty horses died at Santa Anita during its most recent meet that started in late December and ended in late June. Christopher Jaczko, representing the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, argued that whether or not Hollendorfer could be connected to the horses' deaths, Del Mar's decision to exclude Hollendorfer was a valid business decision based on the negative publicity Hollendorfer could bring."Mr. Hollendorfer's record over the past six months in California is problematic," Jaczko said.He alleged that banning Hollendorfer was also in the interests of horse safety and not just to avoid bad publicity. However, had avoiding negative publicity been the sole reason for the ban, Jaczko contended that would be a rational business justification on Del Mar's part, particularly with the heightened scrutiny the horse racing industry is currently facing."We're not saying he did anything to kill those horses. We're saying that in the best interest of our business, we don't want the attention, we don't want the clamor that we're not doing everything we can to change business as usual," Jaczko said.Jaczko also said the ban does not cause "irreparable harm" to Hollendorfer, as he has the ability to participate in other races, including several ongoing and upcoming races in California.Talking to reporters outside the courtroom, Hollendorfer said he was "very grateful" that Frazier ruled in his favor."I've lost an awful lot of business because of this," said Hollendorfer, who was not sure when he would begin participating in the Del Mar racing season.Hollendorfer said he had confidence in his training methods, but would be open to recommendations to improve horse safety."I would guess my stable does more with horses every day than any other stable that I know of," Hollendorfer said. "We examine every horse every day from head to toe. We take them out of their stalls and jog them down the road and make sure that they're sound before we even consider taking them to the racetrack. I think that we're doing plenty to ensure the safety of our stable and if somebody else has another suggestion how to do more, than I'm certainly willing to listen to somebody's opinion on that."Hollendorfer's attorney, Drew Couto, said his record with equine fatalities was not as severe as Del Mar claimed, and laid blame to Stronach Group racetracks, identifying them as the common denominator in the deaths of horses under Hollendorfer's care."Where did (Hollendorfer) have equine fatalities? He had them at Stronach group racetracks," Couto said. "They were horribly managed in our opinion this last year and that's the cause of these issues."Couto did not make any definitive statements regarding any legal steps towards contesting Santa Anita's ban."One step at a time," Couto said. "We had to take care of this issue. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- A prominent local civil rights leader called on the San Diego County Sheriff's Department Monday to fire a deputy who allegedly shared a "lewd and racist and vile" altered photograph of George Floyd taken from the viral video of the Minnesota man's death in police custody.The doctored image showed a nude male "porn star" kneeling on Floyd in place of Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin, who kept his knee on Floyd's neck for nearly nine minutes as the detainee repeatedly protested that he could not breathe, according to NAACP San Diego Branch President Francine Maxwell. She said the lawman "must go" because "this is far from the first time he has shown himself to be an overtly racist and deplorable human being" and because "this (doctored-photo) incident shows he has clearly not changed his evil, racist and hate-filled ways and (that) he is a danger to all residents of the county."The sheriff's spokesman said the department's leaders "understand the public concern" over the episode and "want to bring the matter to a just conclusion as soon as possible."
