TIJUANA, Mexico (KGTV) — Mexican authorities arrested three people in connection to the slayings of two teenage Honduran migrants.Police executed a search warrant in Tijuana Tuesday night after they said Esmerelda N., Carlos N., and Francisco N. kidnapped and killed the teenagers over the weekend. 10News tracked down Uriel Gonzalez, the General Coordinator of the YMCA Homes for Migrant Youth - Mexico. He said the three unaccompanied minors traveled alone from their home towns in Honduras to seek temporary refuge in Mexico. For the time they were at the shelter they were well behaved. So when they went missing on Saturday around lunch time, his staff believed they had walked off their open-door campus to visit friends at another shelter. When one came back seriously injured, he realized they were targeted.“They were kidnapping the kids that are in a very vulnerable position, who are not Mexicans. Migrants are very attractive for organized crime, because of the extortion and the money they can ask to their families,” Gonzalez said. According to Baja California prosecutors, three Honduran migrants seeking refuge at the Tijuana YMCA Youth Shelter were on their way to El Barretal, the main caravan shelter Saturday night. A witness told authorities two men and one woman robbed and kidnapped the three boys during the walk.Later that night, the bodies of two boys, 16 and 17 years old, were found in a Tijuana alleyway. They had been stabbed and strangled. Despite being seriously injured, a third teen managed to escape. According to the Youth Shelter organizer, the boys arrived in the US-Mexico border city as part of the migrant caravan about two to three weeks ago. In the time they were at the shelter, they never had any disciplinary issues.Shelter staff members have since asked the Mexican government to increase security measures in the area.Investigators said the deaths are among the many recent violent incidents happening in and around the migrant shelters in Tijuana. On Tuesday night, two people walking on the street threw a can of tear gas into El Barretal. The migrants were not injured and the facility was not damaged. Investigators said this is another example of the growing tensions and impatience between asylum seekers and local Mexicans. 2287

They've been ignored for decades, but now, drive-in movie theaters are making a huge comeback. It's the only place where large crowds of people can see a movie together, and still maintain a social distance.Usually on vacant lots or in rural areas, the drive-in was hugely popular. Until it wasn't. Fancy theaters took over and many of those sites became a piece of history, the empty lots they sat on often doubling as a swap meet.“It’s been one of the most interesting stories of the pandemic, in terms of the movie business, is that drive-ins, which have been mostly ignored since the 70s and 80s, have become the focal point for theatrical movie going and for people who want to get out of the house and go to the movies, because those are the spaces that are open and I think it will have an impact going forward,” said Ross Melnick, professor of film and media studies at the University of California Santa Barbara.Melnick is also the man behind the website Cinema Treasures. The site provides research on more than 50,000 theaters around the world. “It features memories, comments, data, photographs; it’s a globally crowd-sourced information database in which people can talk about when they worked at theaters, the information they have on them. as well as remembering their history and contemporary function,” he explained.Now, it's a social site. People keeping in touch, remembering their favorite theaters, and their favorite memories. “When you’re home, you’re thinking about what you’re missing, what you used to do--used to go to the restaurant, coffee shop and one of the things they used to do is go to the movies,” Melnick said.The Memphis-based Malco Theatres has been a family business since 1915. There are 36 locations and one drive-in, which recently reopened. Malco called it a "socially distant cinematic success."“It’s selling out. It’s like the glory days,” said David Tashie, president of Malco Theatres. “Cars are piling in. Melnick says there's been pop-up drive-ins all over the country and world. Some are so full they're turning people away. It's the one place where people can be together, even if they're not. "The longevity of the kind of business it creates a stake in the community there’s this continuum you have this place that and multiple generations have grown up in the area,” Melnick said. “The summer drive-in is this consistent location for rites of passage- childhood, teenage hood or parenthood. In 2011, he moved to the Escondido location on East Valley Parkway. He initially enjoyed his time working there."[I liked] the customer service interaction, solving the customer problems and issues, and of course, developing employees," Girsch said. In 2014, he became supervisor for the paint department. According to his lawsuit, he noticed what he believed to be "unlawful activities concerning hazardous waste disposal" at the store where he worked."They were literally dumping hazmat down the garbage containers that was going to the landfills," Girsch said. He said he filed a complaint with the Environmental Protection Agency in late 2014 and also had numerous conversations with investigators about Home Depot violations. "I reported what I felt was illegal," he said. After that, he claimed retaliation began. He was accused of safety violations and according to his lawsuit, "repeatedly denied promotions and targeted for discipline.""I ran a five million dollar department, which was the paint department, and I was subsequently in 2017 demoted to the tool rental," Girsch said.Home Depot was fined millions in March 2018 for hazardous materials and customer privacy violations. An investigation between the Attorney General's office and several prosecutors' offices, including San Diego, resulted in a .8 million dollar settlement. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office could not reveal which local Home Depot locations were investigated, but did say all the ones inspected in the county revealed unlawful hazardous waste disposal."You will not silence my voice," Girsch said. "[Home Depot knows] the issues. They've ignored time after time, any attempts to resolve the issues."A Home Depot spokesperson told Team 10: "We disagree with his claims, which we'll address in the proper form."
