SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A dog named Roadrunner was spotted on camera escaping a coyote in an incident that’s happening more than ever before, according to the Helen Woodward Animal Center. The shelter’s veterinarians got a call from neighbors in Vista last month. One of the residents saw a small dog repeatedly on the run from coyotes in the Creekside and Brengle Terrace areas. Neighbors kept in touch through NextDoor as many of them tried to lure the dog to safety. Babs Fry, whose nonprofit “A Way Home For Animals” helps rescue pets, was able to save Roadrunner. She brought the dog to the Helen Woodward Animal Center for a free checkup. “We were concerned that Roadrunner may have been bitten and would require Rabies shots and months of downtime, but he was one of the lucky ones who managed to escape without incident,” said Animal Health Supervisor Madison Hughes. Roadrunner was treated for malnourishment, and skin and flea issues, shelter officials said. Fry took him home for a full recovery and will start interviewing potential adopters next week. Roadrunner’s story is increasingly common, according to Helen Woodward Animal Center officials. The shelter has received more reports of coyote attacks and the deaths of pets than ever before. The increase in coyote encounters may be due to last year’s fires, seasonal drought, heat, and recent housing development, shelter officials said. The Helen Woodward Animal Center has tips to protect your pets from coyotes:Don’t keep pet food or water outside, especially at nightSupervise your pets while outdoors, especially smaller dogsPick up fallen fruit from trees in your yard.Keep your cat indoors, especially between dusk and dawnThoroughly clean your grill and if possible store it in a garageNever leave dogs tied up outsideDo keep your dog on a leash on walks and hikes in order to keep them in close proximityBring a whistle or bear spray along on hikes and walksSix-foot tall fences are most effective in keeping coyotes out. For extra protection “coyote runners,” devices that can be installed on the top perimeter of tall fences and cause a coyote to slip off when trying to hop over are effective.NEVER run away from a coyoteMake loud noises, yell, spray a garden hose in their direction or squirt vinegar, bang pots and pans together, throw sticks, cans, rubber balls or other small objects toward (not at) the coyote. (You want to discourage the coyote from coming back so you may have to use a variety of these methods if coyote sightings persist) 2528

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A family wants the Governor of California to keep the man who murdered three San Diego State professors behind bars. Frederick Davidson was sent to prison in 1997 for three consecutive life sentences without parole after he gunned down his three engineering professors Chen Liang, Preston Lowry, and Constantinos Lyrintzis. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office recently notified the victims’ families that Davidson applied for executive clemency.“Just asking for clemency?  Out of what?  On what grounds?” asked a distraught Esther Alonso, Lyrintzis’ sister-in-law.  Lyrintzis was married to her sister, Deana Alonso, and the couple had a young daughter.A District Attorney’s Office spokesman said the DA’s office already filed a letter opposing Davidson’s request.Alonso told 10News she could not believe Davidson would request clemency.  Alonso said the family agreed to not seek the death penalty in 1997 if Davidson agreed to plead guilty and go to prison for life without parole.“How can they tell them 20 years later that the deaths of their husbands and their fathers…that this guy has more rights than they do?” asked Alonso, a professor at Southwestern College. “I don’t understand a system where that is even possible.”Alonso created a Change.org petition directed at Governor Jerry Brown asking him to deny Davidson’s request. The DA’s spokesman said their office opposed more than 50 clemency requests last year and none of those requests were granted.  The spokesman added there is no deadline for Governor Brown to respond or send it to a hearing. 1627

The winner each of last season's 10 episodes received ,000.Culvenor said he created "Holey Moley" because he "wanted to create a fun physical competition that people of any age, body type or background could take part in.""Miniature golf was perfect because absolutely everyone can play, and people have such fond nostalgic memories of playing it on family vacations, first dates or with friends," he said.Culvenor said he pitched the show as "a serious competition in a really silly world.""Everyone who takes part in 'Holey Moley' genuinely wants to win and is very passionate about putting, but the world we've created is absolutely ridiculous and fun," he said.Basketball star Stephen Curry is among "Holey Moley's" executive producers and is also the "course pro," who presents the show's plaid version of the Masters Tournament's Green Jacket and Golden Putter trophy to each episode's winner."Stephen absolutely loves miniature golf, so he was extremely collaborative when it came to designing the holes on our incredible course," Culvenor said."He also has a fantastic sense of humor, so he fully embraced the comedic elements of the series and really helped make the show fun for the whole family."Culvenor called "Holey Moley" "the perfect show to watch with the whole family, and not only have a lot of laughs, but to also witness some incredible performances by very talented competitors.""In these challenging times when there is a lot to be stressed about, 'Holey Moley' is a feel-good celebration of fun, silliness and amazing skill," Culvenor said. 3535

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A 10News investigation has revealed that the California department responsible for the state’s child welfare program does not maintain data regarding all deaths of children in foster care.  The revelation is prompting calls for immediate action to child welfare services from at least one San Diego-based politician.State law requires counties to report any child death that is determined to be suspected to be the result of abuse or neglect to the California Department of Social Services.  According to the CDSS, each county in California is required to keep track of every foster child that dies while in its custody.Counties are also responsible for reporting all high profile incidents that occur in foster homes to the State Department of Social Services. High profile incidents would include incidents involving death or serious injury. But the CDSS has no master data list available regarding foster deaths and says that information is maintained at the county level.Using open records laws Team 10 collected the total number fatalities of children residing in a foster placement from all 58 counties in the state since 2010.The numbers show more than 250 kids died during that time across the state. 1290
