SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego State University reported 25 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 1,072 since Aug. 24, the first day of instruction for the fall semester.The new totals reported by Student Health Services reflect numbers as of 6 p.m. Saturday.Of the students living on campus, 385 have tested positive and students living off-campus totaled 666 positive cases, health services said. A total of eight faculty or staff members have tested positive and 13 "visitors," people who have had exposure with an SDSU-affiliated individual, have tested positive.The number of confirmed cases was 1,030, with 42 probable cases.The information is based on cases reported to Student Health Services by an individual or by a public health official. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County public health officials Saturday reported 529 newly confirmed cases and four additional deaths from COVID-19, bringing the county's totals to 29,577 cases and 565 deaths.Three new community outbreaks of COVID-19 were identified Friday, raising the number of outbreaks in the past week to 40. One outbreak was in a restaurant/bar, another in a gym, the other in a government setting.The number of outbreaks far exceeds the county's goal of fewer than seven in a seven-day span. A community setting outbreak is defined as three or more COVID-19 cases in a setting and in people of different households.Of the 9,161 tests reported Friday, 6% were positive. The 14-day rolling average percentage of positive cases is 5.4%. The state's target is fewer than 8% of tests returning positive.Of the total positive cases, 2,551 -- or 8.6% -- required hospitalization and 650 -- or 2.2% -- were admitted to an intensive care unit.The four people whose deaths were reported Friday were men who died between July 24 and July 31. Their ages ranged from 55 to 82. All had underlying medical conditions, as have 95% of those who have died from the illness.According to county data, 57% of adult San Diego County residents have underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, heart and lung disease, cancer, diabetes and obesity. These conditions put such people at higher risk for serious illness should they contract COVID-19.Of the total hospitalized during the pandemic due to the illness, 71% have been 50 or older. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Legion Major League Rugby team announced Tuesday that it released recently signed player Steffon Armitage in the wake of his conviction for sexually assaulting a woman in France.On Monday, a French court found Armitage guilty of groping a woman's breasts outside a bar last year in the town of Pau, where he was playing at the time of the assault. Armitage, 34, admitted he had also been drinking heavily that night.The court handed Armitage a suspended prison sentence and ordered him to compensate the victim with 5,000 euros, roughly ,500 in U.S. dollars.The Legion signed Armitage in July. Earlier in the decade, Armitage won three European Rugby Champions Cup titles with France's FC Toulannais and was named the European Rugby Cup's 2013-2014 player of the year.He had been expected to join the team at the beginning of pre-season training in December."Armitage's conduct does not reflect the values of the Legion and therefore, the team is going to go in a different direction for the 2020 season," the team said in a statement released Tuesday.The Legion launched with Major League Rugby in 2018 as one of the league's seven founding teams. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The caregiver for a 74-year-old man who died in her care and another senior who were both involuntarily locked away at her various San Diego residences was sentenced Friday to 13 years in state prison.Shirley Montano, 53, pleaded guilty earlier this year to charges of voluntary manslaughter, false imprisonment of a dependent adult and perjury.A murder charge stemming from the death of Robert Chagas was dropped under the plea agreement.RELATED: Woman to stand trial for senior's death, abuse of elderly womanProsecutors alleged the defendant withheld food from Chagas and Josefina Kellogg, 61, causing their health to deteriorate over the course of several years, during which she moved often and relocated them, as well.Chagas died Oct. 7, 2016, at Sharp Memorial Hospital of pneumonia, which prosecutors argued was exacerbated by severe malnutrition he suffered under Montano's care.While the victims lived with Montano, she used their social security checks and other government benefits to buy herself a truck, among other personal purchases, and gambled away their money at local casinos, according to prosecutors.Testimony from Montano's 2019 preliminary hearing indicated Chagas and Kellogg were kept isolated from others and were confined to their respective bedrooms. Wagner said Chagas was not getting sufficient food, but could not opine as to why, only that it appeared to be due to non-medical factors.No calls were made by family or medical professionals to Adult Protective Services in Chagas' case, which also contributed to Wagner's opinion not to classify his death as a homicide, the doctor said.While evidence was presented that Chagas once told a doctor that his weight loss was due to not having enough money for food, Sebeckis said that was not proof that Montano was taking his money or withholding food, especially in light of Chagas' issues with handling his own finances.Chagas' family members testified that an accident that occurred at childbirth had left him "slow," as his brother Richard described it, and that throughout his adult life, Chagas was susceptible to being scammed and had lost exorbitant amounts of money to fraudsters, leading family members to take an active role in assisting him with taxes and paying bills.Sebeckis argued there was little direct evidence that Montano didn't feed the seniors, as past roommates said they had seen her providing food for Chagas and Kellogg. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County health officials have reported 2,490 new COVID-19 infections and 14 new deaths, marking 104,958 total cases and 1,151 total deaths.Saturday marked the fourth consecutive day that more than 2,000 new cases were reported, with 2,867 cases -- a record -- reported Friday, 2,050 reported Thursday and 2,104 Wednesday. It is also the 12th day with more than 1,000 new cases. It is just the sixth time the daily cases have crossed 2,000 -- all of which have come in the past week.Of 27,599 tests reported Saturday, 9% returned positive.The number of hospitalizations continued to rise, with 38 people hospitalized and four patients put in intensive care units. The COVID-19- related hospitalizations increased to 965 -- 249 in ICUs. Since the pandemic began, 5,064 or 4.9% of cases have been hospitalized due to coronavirus, 1,098, or 1.1% have been sent to the ICU.The county's hospitals have 16% of their ICU beds available, down from 21% Thursday. The state now estimates the ICU bed availability in the 11- county Southern California region at 6.2%, down from 7.7% on Thursday.Of the 4,627 people hospitalized in the county, 20% are due to COVID- 19, and 44% of ICU patients.
