According to our reporting partner, Televisa, 15,000 troops will be at the U.S. border Monday morning.Earlier in June, Mexican authorities announced they were sending hundreds of troops to it's southern border to keep migrants from entering from Guatemala. All this in an effort to curb rampant migration."It's exploded without a solution," Foreign Affairs National Security Analyst Ron Bee said. "It's the Mexican response to the threat of tariffs made by President Trump. if they don't do enough to stop Central Americans from entering their country, and traveling across Mexico and entering our country."Televisa tells 10News that 500 troops will patrol from Calexico to Tijuana. There will be a ceremony Sunday in Mexico City."If they [troops] come across illegal immigrants they'll have to apprehend them and take them to a facility to hold onto them until they decide what to do," Bee said, whether that's sending them back home or allowing them to apply for asylum.Mexico already ramped up pressure on migrants, by cutting funding to overflowing migrant shelters, "shelters in Mexico have less access to resources, they are receiving hundreds and hundreds more people than before. They are setting up tent cities," Alex Mensing, Project Coordinator with Pueblos Sin Fronteras, said.He added Mexico has taken other measures to discourage migration, "at this point even private bus companies are being pressured to not allow people onto buses without presenting valid government ID."Bee says this is all a symptom of a bigger problem, saying the U.S. needs to adjust how we handle the large flow of migrants, or we'll repeatedly see this issue. 1749

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Gun control activists filled Balboa Park Thursday, demanding gun control for the safety of students.Wendy Wheatcroft, the director of "Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense In America, says the event was in response to the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.  As a mother of three, she was horrified.“I want to be able to do everything in my power to make sure they grow up in a safe environment,” Wheatcroft said.RELATED: Victims of Parkland shootingWheatcroft says California has some of the toughest gun laws in the country and should be the model for the federal level.“In California, we have a gun law called the gun violence restraining order and this allows people to remove weapons from someone they deem to be a threat to themselves or others,” she said.  “If they had this law in Florida, they could have prevented this from happening.”RELATED: Vigil held for Parkland shooting victimsJim Miller is with the San Diego Gun Owner’s Political Action Committee. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Despite criticism, a spokesperson for the California Republican Party told ABC 10News on Tuesday that the party will continue placing unofficial ballot drop boxes around communities.They've popped up in Orange, Los Angeles, and Fresno counties, but so far none have been reported in San Diego. Several have been labeled "official", as confirmed by CA GOP spokesperson Hector Barajas. “We could've had better wording on the ballot boxes and so we changed some of the wording around already on the ballot boxes but the important thing to remember is that these ballot boxes are inside our campaign headquarters or inside of businesses or other organizations. It's not as though they're outside in front of a mailbox or outside a library or a secondhand store or another place of business,” he told ABC 10News.On Monday, California's Secretary of State and the State Attorney General sent a cease and desist to the GOP, calling the boxes illegal. Some argue that the boxes are deceptive and could lead to tampering. “These boxes are not the same as county election drop boxes that are required to meet state security standards,” said California Secretary of State Alex Padilla.Barajas told ABC 10News, “What is happening right now is the Secretary of State -- with this cease and desist -- is basically looking to engage in voter suppression [by] eliminating more options for individuals to be able to drop off their ballot.”Barajas said that "ballot harvesting" is a practice that allows a third party to collect voters' completed ballots and was legalized four years ago in a bill authored by San Diego Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez.A tweet Tuesday from one of Gonzalez’s accounts reads, "Apparently, Republicans in our legislature think that when I wrote that a voter could designate a 'person' to turn in their ballot, they thought I meant a fraudulently labeled box. I'm terribly sorry. I will define person next time.”When asked how many boxes the GOP has placed around the state, Barajas responded, “We're not giving an exact number but we will say that we've got them statewide and with the amount of press we've gotten on this we're considering maybe even doubling or tripling our efforts.”The San Diego County Registrar of Voters reports it has already received 175,000 completed ballots. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Foreign ambassadors from around the world made their way to San Diego to visit the border and see how the US handles security Monday. Rolling down a gravel road, at the US-Mexico border, a van carried several foreign ambassadors to the US. The group, part of more than 30, came to San Diego for the State Department’s “Experience America Program.” Monday’s stop – a 14-mile stretch of newly constructed primary and secondary border wall just east of Otay Mesa. As the ambassadors approached, work was being done in the hope of finishing the project by January. “Today we’ve been told how you are protecting the US-Mexico border,” said Javlon Vahobov, Uzbekistan Ambassador to the United States.Like the Uzbekistan Ambassador, this is their first time to California. Border issues top of mind in his home country. “For a country that is located in the heart of central Asia, and surrounded by all 5 central Asian countries- including Afghanistan.”Agents describing how they protect the border, from the construction of the walls, to agents and technology. “Struggling with smuggling of narcotics, fighting trafficking persons. Those issues that have been shared today are very accurate, accurate for the region, for Uzbekistan itself,” said Vahobov. The border trip is just part of the diplomats’ visit to San Diego. “Tunnels are being digged and drugs transported and that’s a real threat for American people I think,” said Andris Teikmanis, Ambassador of Latvia to the United States.Teikmanis said he was also anxious to hear more about innovation taking place in San Diego. “Learning about biotechnology, and university and different kinds of businesses and culture present here in San Diego.” 1723
