Across the country, confederate statues and symbols are going down. Just this week, Mississippi voted to change its flag which featured the old confederate flag. On Wednesday night, a statue of Stonewall Jackson was taken down in Richmond, VA. NO CHANGES INSIDE CAPITOLWhile changes are no doubt underway around the country, the 11 statues representing Confederate soldiers and officials are on display as part of the National Statuary Hall collection in the United States Capitol. "They committed treason against the United States," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said in a recent press conference. Pelosi wrote a letter asking for the Confederate men to be removed, however she doesn't have the power to do so unilaterally. Senator Mitch McConnell has said he won't pass a new law to change that"What I do think is clearly a bridge too far - this nonsense that we need to airbrush the Capitol, I mean eight former presidents owned slaves," McConnell told reporters recently. STATUES IN CONGRESS ARE CONTROLLED BY STATESCurrently, each state gets to send two statues to display inside the United States Capitol. Often times, the state legislature decides which statue is represented, which can get political The full list is available here, however these are the 11 confederate men represented in the collection: Jefferson Davis, President of Confederate States of America, Mississippi James Zachariah George, Reconstruction leader and white supremacist, Mississippi Wade Hampton, One of the largest slaveholders in the Southeast, South Carolina John E. Kenna, Confederate soldier, West Virginia Robert E. Lee, Commander of the Confederate States Army, Virginia Uriah Milton Rose, Confederacy supporter, Arkansas . Edmund Kirby Smith, Confederate soldier and slave holder, Florida. Alexander Hamilton Stephens, Vice president of the Confederate States, Georgia Zebulon Baird Vance, Confederate military member, North Carolina Joseph Wheeler, Commander in the Confederate Army of Tennessee, Alabama Edward Douglass White, Confederate solider, Louisiana 2060

After dipping below a million new claims a week for the first time since March, jobless claims are back up above that mark. The U.S. Department of Labor just reported at least 1.1 million people filed new jobless claims last week, while there were another 14.8 million continuing claims. For all those on unemployment, what is not back is the 0 pandemic unemployment assistance. Instead, President Trump signed an executive order for Lost Wage Assistance, while Congress is still in a stalemate over a new stimulus package.Until the president’s order kicks in, after states apply for the help and get approved, everyone on unemployment is being forced to live off their respective state's normal unemployment benefit. In many states, the average benefit payout is meager, at best.“The national average for unemployment dropped from nearly 0 a week to just 8 a week in June of this year, because so many low wage workers were losing their jobs,” said Andrew Stettner, a senior fellow at The Century Foundation.Stettner has been heavily researching and analyzing unemployment benefits with the New York and D.C.-based independent think tank. Part of his research and analysis shows low-wage workers could be getting far less than that average state weekly benefit. For example, in a state like Hawaii, some low wage workers could be getting the state’s minimum payout of just a week right now. In other states like Louisiana, Connecticut, North Carolina, Nevada, Oklahoma, and Delaware, minimums aren’t much higher, ranging between to per week.“All but nine states have minimum benefits below 0 per week,” Stettner added.Understanding states’ minimums and how little some workers could now be getting per week is important because it will impact their eligibility for the president’s executive order.“If you don’t get more than 0 in unemployment benefits a week from the state, you can’t get Trump's new Lost Wage Assistance,” explained Stettner.Lost Wage Assistance is an additional 0 a week from the federal government for those on unemployment and is supposed to be available until Dec. 27, 2020. Essentially, right now, it is the only stopgap in place to help those unemployed, but it won’t help those who may need help the most. That’s why many are urging Congress to quickly come to an agreement on the next stimulus bill that helps everyone struggling.“I think there is the will to continue federal unemployment employment benefits, Trump’s executive order. Trump’s executive order promises them through December 27, but there is not enough money to fulfill that promise. So, I think there is the will to do the right thing but there is a lot getting in the way,” said Stettner. 2718

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A man has died following a deputy-involved shooting in Alpine Monday afternoon.  The man's family later identified him as Daniel Ayala. According to the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, deputies shot Ayala at an apartment complex on the 2600 block of Alpine Boulevard around 3 p.m. during a confrontation. No deputies were injured, sheriff's officials said.According to Lt. Michael Blevins, dispatchers had received several 911 calls reporting a man yelling in the apartment complex. Blevins said at one point he made statements threatening to kill people. A witness told 10News, Ayala had pounded on his door, yelling incoherently. When deputies arrived they say they went up to Ayala's apartment."He exited the apartment with a knife in his hand and advanced towards the deputies," said Lt. Blevins. That's when the deputies opened fire. Blevins said more than one deputy fired a gun, though he said they were still investigating exactly who discharged their weapon and how many shots were fired. 1064

Actresses Kristen Bell and Jenny Slate have both announced that they will no longer voice mixed-race characters on their respective animated shows, acknowledging that the roles would be better suited for actresses of color.Bell voiced Molly Tillerman, a mixed-race character in 13 episodes of the Apple Plus animated series "Central Park," which was released earlier this year. In a statement Wednesday, the show acknowledged that the character represented an "opportunity to get representation right."The show said it would find a Black or mixed-race actress to voice the character moving forward. Bell will remain on the show's creative team in a "new role.""We profoundly regret that we might have contributed to anyone's feeling of exclusion or erasure," the show's statement read."I am happy to relinquish this role to someone who can give a much more accurate portrayal and I will commit to learning, growing and doing my part for equality and inclusion," Bell said in a statement of her own. 1006

Airports are finding new ways to make traveling safe for passengers during the COVID-19 pandemic. From mask requirements to high-tech cleaning solutions and physical distancing campaigns, they want travelers to feel safe the next time they fly. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is testing technology that could detect the virus long before a person boards their plane. They're running a 12-week pilot program with three thermal imaging cameras aimed at detecting elevated temperatures in passengers. Justin Erbacci is the CEO of Los Angeles World Airport (LAWA), the governing body for LAX and Van Nuys Airports. He says LAX is the first airport to test this kind of technology at a terminal entrance. "Certainly, as we ramp up, we have to have a process that allows passengers just to flow in," said Erbacci. Erbacci says the aviation industry has never experienced a crisis of this magnitude."The closest that I experienced was 9/11, of course. And that was a terrible, terrible time. But it was a much shorter period, and the impacts were not as severe. Now, we are in a situation where the impacts are significantly greater and the duration is much longer," said Erbacci. Medical staff monitors the thermal imaging cameras, looking for passengers with a fever of 100.4 or higher. If an elevated temperature is detected, the passenger is asked to take a voluntary second screening with a thermometer, to validate the accuracy of the thermal cameras. If a passenger is confirmed to have a fever, they're given information about the risk but are not turned away. However, they could face another screening by their airline, which has the final say on whether they fly.Medical assistant Genevie Guillen says passengers have so far been fully cooperative."Everyone is a bit scared, so I think they'd rather take precautions than take the chance of flying," said Guillen. Only deployed for a week, the screenings have not yet detected anyone with a fever, but there have been a few false positives. The airport is hoping more time and data will provide a clearer picture of the camera's accuracy. Critics of the technology say even if it's accurate, it can't spot asymptomatic passengers. And some people who show other symptoms never get a fever at all. From February 24 to April 21, the CDC screened approximately 268,000 returning travelers, discovering only 14 COVID-19 cases."These temperature checks are not meant to be the single solution that it is going to make everybody safe. It's just one layer of protection, in addition to many others," said Erbacci. The cameras being tested at LAX are on loan at no charge, but outfitting the entire airport with them would cost in the millions; it's an investment LAX hopes the government will help fund.Apart from giving every passenger a COVID test, Erbacci says it's the best way to detect the virus. But to be truly effective, he says it must be done nationwide to ensure arriving passengers have also been screened."If we can remove, even if it's only one-third or two-thirds of the people that actually have the virus, you're still stopping those people from coming in," said Erbacci. 3153
