Army Secretary Ryan D. McCarthy said Tuesday that he was suspending 14 leaders at Fort Hood after an internal investigation revealed "major flaws" in leadership at the Texas base.On Tuesday, McCarthy blamed leadership for allowing a culture that invited sexual assault against female soldiers to fester, saying the culture was "the direct result of leadership failures."McCarthy also said the Army would institute policy changes that he hopes to be in place by March 2021, adding that the internal investigation will "without a doubt will change the culture of the Army."Investigations into the alleged toxic leadership culture at Fort Hood began earlier this year with the disappearance of then-Pfc. Vanessa Guillen. She was last seen on the base on April 22 and was not seen until her remains were found at a nearby river in July.Hours after Guillen's remains were found, a suspect wanted in connection with her death died by suicide as police officers approached his car during a traffic stop. That soldier's estranged wife was later arrested in connection with Guillen's death.Guillen's family has maintained that prior to her death, she had been sexually assaulted by another soldier at the base. They also claim that she had been afraid to report the assault to her superior officers for fear of retribution.Weeks after her death, the Army said that while an investigation remained open, they had not found evidence that Guillen had been sexually assaulted.McCarthy did not make any specific statements regarding Guillen's case and the current status into the investigation into the assault allegations. However, he did say that Guillen's murder "shocked our conscience."Guillen's family held a press conference at the Fort on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.Speaking alongside Guillen's family, Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo said it is important for those aware of assaults to come forward."When a person is a victim, there no more powerful thing than love," Acevedo said. "I want to tell the community to come forward." Guillen's case wasn't the only sign of trouble at Fort Hood. Between January and late October, the Intercept reports that there were 28 deaths on the base, including five homicides and eight suicides. In October, The Intercept published a report that detailed fears of seven noncommissioned officers who said the culture at the base had grown so toxic that they feared for the safety of their soldiers. The report detailed rampant misconduct, including drug use, sexual assault and warning signs of suicide that were ignored by commanding officers.CNN reports that Fort Hood is home to 37,000 service members and has a total population of more than 60,000. 2682

As has been stated by numerous legal scholars, I have the absolute right to PARDON myself, but why would I do that when I have done nothing wrong? In the meantime, the never ending Witch Hunt, led by 13 very Angry and Conflicted Democrats (& others) continues into the mid-terms!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 4, 2018 346

ANDERSON, Indiana — An inmate on work release in an Indiana county is accused of stealing election equipment. The Madison County Clerk says no voting was compromised. Indiana State Police said Tyler Sink, 26, was on work release in Madison County and was authorized to work at the clerk's office. Investigators said an employee with the Madison County Justice Center told police they found a personal electronic ballot and a memory card hidden in Sink's personal belongings. State police say they believe Sink stole the equipment after he volunteered to set up a voting site while on work release. Madison County Clerk Darlene Likens says the compromised machines are not being used in early voting and that no voter information was stolen. "There is nothing, nothing was compromised," said Likens. "Nothing of our election was compromised, not the integrity of it but it's picked up something I don't think he had a clue what it was."Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings issued the following statement: 1041

As many NFL fans question the patriotism of kneeling NFL players, the spotlight is now turning to the fans themselves. The Green Bay Packers handed out small American Flags during the Packers-Lions Monday Night Game, as part of the NFL's Salute to Service Military Campaign. "During the National Anthem, everybody was waving (their flags) and singing," Marine veteran Tegan Griffith told WTMJ.  "It made me feel very good."However, by halftime, Griffith says she and her fellow veterans noticed many of the flags were discarded."We started noticing people leaving (flags) on the ground, next to food wrappers and beer cups," Griffith explained.  "We found a couple on the bathroom floor.  The veterans I was with started to get a little upset."After the game, the flags were seen everywhere."It looked like red, white, and blue confetti," described Phil Olson, a season ticker holder.  "People were walking all over them.  It struck me as unpatriotic."After the game, both Olson and Griffith told WTMJ they spotted several fans picking up the extra flags."I'm going to tell the Packers they they shouldn't hand out flags because it's the wrong venue," Olson said. "Every game, the Packers will give out a souvenir with the Packers logo on it.  Everybody takes the (souvenir) home.  But after this game, hardly anybody wanted the American flag."The Packers released a statement on the matter:"We distributed more than 77,000 United States flags as part of the Salute to Service theme of the game. We were particularly pleased with how they contributed to the festive atmosphere of the game, especially during the national anthem. We received a lot of positive feedback. We often have fan giveaways and this one was very popular. Our stadium- and guest-services teams picked up any flags they noticed on the ground." 1897

Are you looking for some steaks to throw on the grill this weekend or on the Fourth of July? You may want to bring extra money; the pandemic is sending meat prices up sharply this month.High prices are starting to impact consumers, restaurants, and anyone who cooks meat for their business.Tyrique Ramsey and his family have served his community from a food truck for years, but he was forced to raise prices last week as pork costs skyrocketed."We used to be able to get it for .99 a pound, but now we are almost paying .99 a pound," Ramsey said. While chicken and ground beef prices are higher, the worst is steak, where prices have gone up almost 50% this year on some cuts. for a package of steakAt Walmart, basic strip steaks were a pound, which came to for a package of two small, shrink-wrapped steaks. One of the cheapest cuts of meat, chuck roast, was a pound, almost double from a year ago.Ground beef was in the (fatty) to (lean) a pound range as well, a far cry from the normal summertime price of a pound in many supermarkets.Shopper Jackie Thompson says she can't afford it anymore."I think it's ridiculous, it is totally ridiculous," she said. " for a steak!"At a nearby supermarket, bone-in ribeyes were at a pound, bringing the total to for one steak. Top-dollar cuts like filet mignon were nowhere to be found. The Hutchinson family wondered if short supplies to blame."It's still pretty thin in the meat aisle, for sure," they said.Government blames plant shutdowns and slowdownsThe Bureau of Labor Statistics says processing plant shutdowns continue to cause shortages.Even after those plants reopen, many will be on limited schedules with fewer workers. The Labor report says beef prices rose 11% in May. The average retail price of beef roast rose a whopping 19% during the month. In addition, prices for chicken, tomatoes and even ice cream went up the government said.Restaurants forced to raise pricesRamsey has had to explain why his price board has gone up in recent days, just as many restaurants are raising their menu prices."I just had to go up a few more dollars," he said. "But a lot of the customers, they kind of understand, we explain it to them."Grocery stores insist they are not profiting from rising prices. Still, attorneys general offices in several states are investigating the source of these price hikes, which appear to be linked to processing and slaughterhouse shutdowns due to COVID-19.Until the pandemic subsides, prices could remain on the high side.
