BEIJING, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- It's supposed to be a time of family reunions, new year greetings and fireworks, but blizzards and accidents on Wednesday put a damper on the Chinese New Year. The country is experiencing the peak travel period with millions of people are eager to get away from tough jobs to go home for the most important Chinese holiday, which falls on Sunday. The mass movement of people is the largest human migration on the earth. In the southern Guangdong Province, China's business hub, about 100,000 migrant workers are expected to ride motorcycles to go home to neighboring Hunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces, to avoid train jams and high train ticket prices."It will be a tiring 10-hour motorcycle ride, but I can save a lot of money by not taking a train," said a migrant worker surnamed Huang who set off at 6 a.m. Wednesday for his home in neighboring Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.Traffic police set up more than a dozen rest areas along major national highways so workers could warm their hands, drink some hot tea and repair their motorcycles before continuing their trip.Railway stations across the country have been crowded with millions of migrant workers carrying belongings and trying to buy tickets home. For some, this is the one chance they have per year to return home with gifts for their family. The railways are expected to carry 210 million passengers during the 40-day travel period that began January 30.But a blizzard that hit at least six provinces and regions in northern China Tuesday and Wednesday has disrupted tens of thousands of homecoming trips.Railway authorities say trains will slow down once fresh snow measures 40 cm. Train service will be halted if the snow depth exceeds 50 cm.The Ministry of Transport said at least 24 expressways were closed nationwide amid heavy snow by Wednesday morning in the provinces of Shanxi, Shaanxi, Hebei, Shandong and Henan, as well as in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region.Besides the bad weather, traffic accidents caused by the crush of people and tired driving are straining the nerves of passengers and government officials.More than 600 traffic accidents occurred in the northwestern Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region between Tuesday and Wednesday. No casualties were reported, said the regional traffic police. In Gansu Province, nine people were killed and another 24 injured after a bus with 33 passengers veered off the road and fell into a ravine Wednesday morning near Longnan City.More than 270,000 police have been busy trying to keep order on the roads, cracking down on speeding, overloading and other offences, according to the Ministry of Public Security. The holiday is also an annual headache for authorities as workshops, mostly illegal and poorly run, are speeding up production of fireworks, a must have item when celebrating the Spring Festival.Three people died and another two were injured Wednesday after a blast in a fireworks plant in Anshun City in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

BEIJING, March 18 (Xinhua) -- U.S. Ambassador to China Jon Huntsman Thursday said the U.S.- China relationship is mature and stable enough to weather differences between the two countries.Huntsman made the remarks in his speech, "2010: The Year of Decision," at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing. The ambassador thought 2010 would be "the most important year in the history of the Sino-U.S. relations," as the two sides had to take action and make real progress on pressing global challenges like economic recovery and climate change. The China-U.S relationship had a good start after President Obama took office last year. However, U.S arms sales to Taiwan and U.S leaders' meetings with the ** Lama posed problems."I've seen enough ups and downs to know that the recent turbulence we've experienced is part of a natural cycle. Our relationship is mature and stable enough to weather our differences," said Huntsman in his half-hour speech.Huntsman said he was confident the two countries would work through their differences through dialogue, and they would be able to get on with the global challenges."Together we can lay the foundation for another 30 years of economic growth and stability in our countries, and in the world," he said."I am convinced that blue skies are already on the horizon," he said.He expected the bilateral relationship would regain the "high cruising altitude" of last year by the opening of the Shanghai World Expo in May.He was also confident the two sides would make real progress on the global challenges when they met for the second round of the U.S.-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue (SED) and when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited the United States this year.

SHANGHAI, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- China's economic hub Shanghai in December posted the first year-on-year growth in both imports and exports in 14 months, indicating further recovery from the economic downturn, local customs said Sunday.     Last month, Shanghai's foreign trade stood at 30.7 billion U.S. dollars, a growth of 35.3 percent over the same month of 2008. This was the second year-on-year growth of foreign trade in two consecutive months in the city, the sources said.     Exports in particular, which stood at 15.21 billion U.S. dollars, reported the first year-on-year growth of 23.5 percent since November 2008, while imports surged 49.5 percent, up from the 26.7 percent growth rate in the previous month.     Last month saw the city's trade with the European Union, the United States and Japan up 15.4 percent, 36.8 percent and 19.8 percent, respectively.     However, Shanghai's foreign trade in total last year went down 13.8 percent from 2008 to 277.73 billion U.S. dollars due to the economic crisis effect. The total included 141.91 billion dollars in exports, down 16.2 percent, and 135.82 billion dollars in imports, down 11.1 percent.

BEIJING, Jan. 30 (Xinhua) -- China's National People's Congress (NPC), the top legislature, on Saturday voiced strong protest against Washington's plan to sell a package of arms worth about 6.4 billion U.S. dollars to Taiwan, urging the U.S. side to immediately withdraw the wrong decision. The U.S. government announced the plan "in disregard of the strong opposition and repeated representations from the Chinese side," said a leading official of the NPC Foreign Affairs Committee."We are firmly opposed to that (the plan), and has lodged severe representations to the U.S. side," the official said.Such a move is gravely against the three joint communiques between China and the United States, especially the "Aug. 17" communique, in which the United States promised not to seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan, and intended to gradually reduce arms sales to the island. The plan endangers China's national security and efforts for peaceful reunification. It also harms Sino-U.S. relations and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. "The Chinese people are strongly indignant about it," the official said. The arms package would include 114 Patriot (PAC-3) anti-missile systems, 60 UH-60M Black Hawk helicopters, 12 Harpoon Block II Telemetry missiles, 2 Osprey Class mine hunting ships and a command and control enhancement system, according to a Pentagon website.
