SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The officer who saved two twin toddlers and their dad after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs was recognized for his heroic efforts this week.San Diego Police K9 officer Jonathan Wiese was awarded the Medal of Valor and Heroic Act award from the California Surf Lifesaving Association and United States Lifesaving Association for his efforts to save the three people on June 13.SDPD received a call about a suicidal man with twin two-year-old girls driving with the intention of careening off the Coronado Bridge. Wiese was able to get the man and the two girls from the car to the shore."I could see him and he had one of the girls in his arms, and I have a two-year-old daughter at home so I imagined, what if that was my wife and kid down there? You're not going to stand there on the cliff and watch it happen," he told ABC 10News in June. "And by then four or five other cops had shown up so I pretty much threw the end of the leash to them and then I said hang on and I just jumped off."The officer also performed rescue breathing on one of the girls who was limp after being pulled from the wreck.Wiese is the same officer who helped apprehend the suspected Poway synagogue shooter in April 2019. He was on his way to meet his family for lunch on Apr. 27 when he heard a call of shots fired and immediately responded to the area."I didn't do the job to be liked every day, I didn't do it to become rich, I did it because I want to be out there making a difference and helping people, as cliche as that might sound, but I was just glad I could be there," Wiese said referring to protecting the toddlers. 2058

The latest Center for World University Rankings, published Monday, examined 20,000 universities around the world and focused on quality of education, alumni employment, quality of faculty and research performance. For the 2019-20 CWUR rankings, UC San Diego was listed in 7th among public U.S. universities. Among all U.S. universities, the La Jolla school ranked 21st. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Supreme Court ruling striking down the federal ban on sports betting opens the door to making it legal in California.Jeremy Lind stopped by this sports bar in Normal Heights for a little lunch and sports."I'm a Steelers fan myself, Go Steelers!" said Lind.Lind isn't shy about making bets with friends.  His appetite for bets could soon expand."That would definitely open up my betting curiosities I think," said Lind.'That' is the possibility sports betting becomes legal in California, now that the federal ban has been struck down.  The road to legal sports wagering requires a state constitutional amendment.  Both houses must pass a bill by two-third votes. A majority of voters must then approve it at the ballot box.  Proponents say sports gambling is already happening, including off-shore websites.  George Belch is the co-founder of SDSU's Sports MBA program."The main argument for this is: it's a reality and we need to recognize this and how to control it," said Belch.  The regulation would include consumer protections.  Supporters say taxpayers will win out.  Some estimates place revenues from sports betting between 0 and 0 million in annual tax revenues.  Belch says critics will point to sports gambling's impact on the integrity of amateur sports and gambling addictions.    "They will point out we don't want to make it easier people to bet.  It we facilitate it, it's simply not a good thing," said Belch.Belch says if sports betting becomes legal, you could see it at casinos, racetracks, online sites, even individual parlors. The California Nations Indian Gaming Association issued the following statement: "...we would advise the state to move slowly and cautiously and examine all angles as it relates to sports betting.  As the state of California weighs the decision of whether to allow for the practice of sports wagering, we firmly ask that tribes have a place at the table in any and all discussions surrounding this issue.  We also want to make very clear that California voters have, on numerous occasions, confirmed the exclusive right of California tribal governments to operate casino-style games.  Legalization of sports betting should not become a back-door way to infringe upon that exclusivity.  A strong, well-regulated gaming industry is of utmost importance to California’s tribal governments and the public. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The purple most restrictive tier for coronavirus guidelines goes into effect Saturday forcing many museums around San Diego County to close their doors once again."It really wasn't a surprise and when this all first started happening I think we realized that there wasn't going to be a magic date that everything was going to be better," James Haddan, Senior Director of Development and External Communications at the Museum of Us, said they've been anticipating the county's fall back into the purple tier."We made some hard choices initially, right away," Haddan said they made difficult cuts to staff at the beginning of the pandemic, hoping to sustain for the next two years."It has been extremely difficult for arts and cultural organizations throughout the city and Balboa Park would be no different," Executive Director of the Balboa Park Cultural Partnership Peter Comiskey said.Comiskey said while many of the museums must close, there are still things to do at the park. The Japanese Friendship Garden, Spanish Village, and restaurants are open.In La Jolla, the Birch Aquarium is shifting too. They reopened in July and are creating as many exhibits as they can outside. Throughout the day, both Democrats and Republicans repeated the same points over and over again. Political analysts say that’s only expected to continue. “The president used the power of his public office to obtain an improper personal political benefit at the expense of America's national security,” said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Pelosi kicked off the debate, summing up the argument to impeach President Donald Trump. The promises to the base matter, and today is a promise kept for the majority,” Collins said. The speeches continued for hours, Democrats and Republicans each taking a minute or two to state their case. Very rarely did either party directly respond to each other. “You are not going to convince the person next to you. They are not your audience,” said Thad Kousser, UC San Diego Political Analyst. Kousser says the way this is set up is purely for show. Different representatives are trying to reach their constituents, who may not be watching live.
