BEIJING, June 11 (Xinhua) -- Chinese equities rose slightly Friday after the release of strong May economic data but concerns over policy tightening and other uncertainties left market participants cautious.China's consumer price index (CPI), the main gauge of inflation, increased in May by 3.1 percent from a year ago, the highest rate of increase since November 2008, according to figures released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).The NBS data showed that growth in factory production and investment continued to slow while retail sales, the main gauge of consumer spending, grew 18.7 percent in May year on year from 18.5 percent in April.Affected by slower industrial output growth and higher-than-expected CPI data, the Shanghai Composite Index initially rose but fell in the afternoon to close at 2,569.94 points, up 0.29 percent, or 7.36 points, from the previous close. The Shenzhen Component Index rose 17.11 points, or 0.17 percent, to end at 10,239.33.Total turnover shrank to 152.66 billion yuan (22.35 billion U.S. dollars) from 167.53 billion yuan the previous trading day.Losers outnumbered gainers by 488 to 359 in Shanghai and 572 to 368 in Shenzhen.Analysts believe the slower growth in industrial output was due to recent tightening measures and that the market has turned cautious as the May CPI figure outpaced the 3-percent ceiling the government has set for this year.Lu Ting, China economist at Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, said China's rising inflation may be interpreted negatively by markets. However, according to Yu Yang, an analyst at Galaxy Securities, the CPI is still "under control" and there is little possibility for a rate hike.Analysts also pointed out the decreased turnover volume reflected the fact some investors have taken a wait-and-see attitude ahead of next week's holidays.Chinese markets will be closed from Saturday to Wednesday for the traditional Dragon Boat Festival Holiday.Coal shares led the rise with a 1.8 percent gain as the May producer price index (PPI), a major measure of inflation at the wholesale level, rose 7.1 percent year on year, outpacing the CPI growth.China Shenhua Energy Co., the country's biggest coal producer, climbed 0.78 percent to 23.35 yuan.

QINGDAO, June 30 (Xinhua) -- The spread of green algae has quickened as the temperature rises in Qingdao City of east China's Shandong Province. The area covered by green algae surged by 60 sq. km on Tuesday to 460 sq. km, according to the latest monitoring figure by the North China Sea Branch of the State Oceanic Administration released Wednesday. The surge is three times as fast as the average increase over the past four days, which was from 380 to 400 sq. km."It's getting hotter and hotter in Qingdao these days, and the green algae grows faster and faster," said Wang Zhigang, a local resident who swims in the sea every day.Sixteen to 20 degrees Celsius were the most favorable sea temperature range for growth of the algae, said Pang Shaojun, a researcher from the Institute of Oceanology under the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The air temperature in Qingdao has risen by one degree Celsius per day on average over the past five days, reaching 27 degree Celsius Wednesday, according to the city's meteorological bureau."The sea temperature has risen to 20 degrees Celsius today, and the algae will keep growing if the temperature keeps rising," Pang said. The weather report said there would be a heavy rain in Qingdao, which would lower the air temperature to 25 degrees Celsius in the next three days, which meant the sea temperature would remain in the best range for the continued spreading of the green algae.Over 6,000 people, including cleaning workers and sea police, were deployed to clean the green algae as its continuing spread might affect the local fishery and tourism industries, said Ding Shugen from the Qingdao Committee of Municipal and Rural Construction.

BEIJING, Aug.1 (Xinhua) -- China's General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) has voiced its support for journalists' rights of supervision after police in an east China county wrongly issued an arrest warrant for a journalist."News organizations have the right to know, interview, cover, criticize and monitor events regarding national and public interests. Journalistic activities by news organizations and their reporters are protected by law," read a statement posted on the GAPP's website. The statement came after police of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province canceled a warrant for Qiu Ziming, a reporter of the Economic Observer News, who was accused of defamation by a publicly-listed company.Qiu had previously been wanted by the police of Suichang after Zhejiang Kan Specialty Material Co., Ltd. (Kan) accused him of defaming the company with fabricated stories. However, police of Lishui City, which administers Suichang, ordered the county's public security bureau to cancel the warrant for Qiu after a review found the warrant failed to meet statutory requirements.Police officials said earlier Friday that the investigation into allegations of defamation against Qiu and his newspaper would continue.

BEIJING, July 23 (Xinhua) -- A senior official with the Communist Party of China (CPC) on Friday reaffirmed the Party's and government's unalterable will to clear pornography from the Internet.Liu Yunshan, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, said at a meeting held in Beijing that the government should continue its efforts to crack down on Internet websites that provide pornographic content or links to lewd information.China has established a special working group for coordinating a nationwide campaign to sweep out pornography and other illegal online publications.Officials with government agencies, including the police force and other law enforcement powers in attendance at the meeting, were asked to not only examine websites but also trace the sources of onlinepornography and break the profit chain from producing online pornography and lewd information.Operators of Internet websites, servers, telecom and even advertising agents will be under scrutiny for any pornography or lewd information spread by their services, according to a statement released at the meeting. In other matters discussed at the meeting, the government said it would continue to promote and establish a real name registration system for Internet users and online service operators, and improve its management over Internet search engines as well as information security regulations.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers were busy searching a possible survivor in a damaged building Wednesday night after they were told cries for help were heard from the building in a mudslide-hit town in northwest China.Zhang Guiquan, an army officer, told Xinhua some residents of Zhouqu County of Gansu Province heard cries from the partially-collapsed building near the Bailong River that overflowed after being blocked by mudslides.About 40 soldiers braving heavy rains and potential mudslides were detecting signs of life near the building after receiving the report from the residents, Zhang said.Hopes of finding any survivors faded as the thunderstorms battered the county seat of Zhouqu Wednesday night, nearly four days after the mudslides hit the town, leaving 1,117 people dead and 627 missing.
