SAN DIEGO (KGTV)---San Diego Fire Department recruiter Captain Jason Shanley reminds people all the time, "If you don’t see it it’s hard for you to know that you can be it."As the department's only full-time recruiter he spends his days making connections, trying to show not only kids but adults that being a firefighter is possible, no matter who they are or where they come from."The narrative is that tall white guys with mustaches are the ones that become firefighters and that’s just not true," saidShanley.Take Captain Shanley for instance. His path to the fire department was paved by members of an organization called Brothers United, a group of African American firefighters in San Diego."I started taking some classes, met some other firefighters, got a mentor and then here I am 20 years later," Shanely said.His passion for what he does and desire to share it made him a perfect fit when the department created the full time recruiting position four years ago."As a department, we really wanted to focus more specifically on and make an actual effort to recruit more diversity into our fire department," he explained.Captain Shanley says some of the biggest obstacles are simply educating people on what it takes to become a firefighter. And once they do know, then trying to help them get the training they need.EMT schools are spread out all over San Diego County; hard to get to for those in the middle of the city without transportation."So we're working to try to bring some of those classes and resources to be more centrally located so we can solve that equity issue and that’s part of what we’re doing in the department as we speak," said Shanley.While there is still work to do, Captain Shanley says it's important the department has someone like him dedicated to hiring staff representative of the community it serves."I want other people to know this is something you can do, it’s more than just a job, it’s a career." 1950

SAN DIEGO — A lawsuit was announced Monday over the death of Roxsana Hernandez, a transgender woman who died in Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody earlier this year as she sought asylum at the border.Hernandez arrived at the U.S.-Mexico border in San Ysidro in May from her native Honduras, but Transgender Law Center Director Lynly Egyes said Hernandez “came to the U.S. seeking protection and instead was met with torture.”"An independent autopsy report reveals that Roxsana was shackled for a long time and very tightly, enough to cause deep bruising on her wrists. She also had deep bruising Injuries consistent with physical abuse with a baton or asp while she was handcuffed, according to an examination of the tissue by an independent expert board-certified forensic pathologist," Egyes said.According to attorneys, Hernandez died from dehydration after being denied water and medical care.Hernandez, who was HIV positive, became very ill as she was transferred from California to Texas, back to California, and then to New Mexico, where she died.Hernandez’s family is hoping the wrongful death lawsuit will provide answers as to what happened. SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A man who illegally demolished a San Francisco house designed by modernist architect Richard Neutra was ordered this week to rebuild it exactly as it was.The city Planning Commission also ordered Ross Johnston to add a sidewalk plaque telling the entire saga of the house's origins in the 1930s, its demolition and replication.It's not known whether he will follow through. (KGTV) - With car horns blaring, cellphone video captured a fight breaking out at a busy intersection in San Diego near Montgomery High School.The incident played out at Palm Avenue and Beyer Way - just feet from the high school - as school let out Friday afternoon. In the crosswalk, there was a flurry off punches. A teen in a hoodie is recorded battering another student on the ground. Some other teens joins the fray and more punches are traded."It's stupid. Why have a fight so dramatic like that? It could cause a car accident," a student told 10News. We are not naming the student at the request of their family.The student doesn't know what sparked the fight, but says those involved were juniors. The student told 10News this was the third big fight on campus this year. "Just make us look bad. Students should set a good example for our school," the student said.There were no accidents, but some of those drivers did get out of their cars. A witness tells us some tried to stop the fight. In the now-viral video, a crowd of people spill across the crosswalk. The melee lasted more than 20 minutes before it broke up. Police arrived but did not make any arrests.Janet Paz, a mother of two students at the school, says it sends a bad message."Makes me feel worried that kids aren't safe in school," said Paz.A spokesperson with the Sweetwater Union High School District says they believe they've identified the three-to-five students involved and are mulling possible discipline. While many are dreading the drive, others have chosen to take the rails.Gary Green was visiting his friend in San Diego for the last few days. But he is making the trip back to Los Angeles on the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner. "The car is a painful experience. The 405 is obnoxious. The 101 is obnoxious.
