NARA, Japan, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Culture Minister Cai Wu met with Seiichi Kondo, Commissioner for Cultural Affairs of Japan, Yu In-Chon, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism of South Korea on Tuesday in Japan's Nara for the 3rd China-Japan- South Korea Ministerial Conference on Culture.The officials exchanged views on China-Japan, China-South Korea bilateral cultural exchanges and cooperation.During the meeting with Kondo, Cai said that the scale and number of China-Japan cultural exchanges rank the first in international cultural exchanges in China and China is willing to develop the bilateral relations on a strategic and long-term point of view.China will enhance the strategic and mutually beneficial relationship between the two countries through cultural exchanges and cooperation, he added.This year, the Chinese Ministry of Culture, with the joint efforts of the two countries' concerned departments, will hold China-Japan "Animation Festival" as well as "Television Week."Seiichi Kondo agreed with Cai's comments on China-Japan cultural exchanges and cooperation and added that although China and Japan experienced some political twists and turns, Japan always attaches great importance to and actively promote the bilateral cultural exchanges and cooperation.Japan is willing to work hand-in-glove with China in regional cooperation and contribute to improving the bilateral relationship, the Japanese official said.During the meeting with Yu In-Chon, Cai said that with the joint efforts of the leaders and different circles from both countries, China-South Korea cultural exchanges have become an important part of the bilateral strategic partnership.The South Korean minister said the width and depth of cultural exchanges have been expanded year by year. BEIJING, Nov. 27 (Xinhua) -- China's apparent consumption of crude steel is likely to reach 596 million tonnes this year, a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent, according to a steel association official.Apparent consumption represents the sum of net imports and output, and can be used to estimate real consumption excluding inventory.Luo Bingsheng, deputy head of the China Iron and Steel Association, expected the country's crude steel output to climb 8.2 percent this year from one year earlier, to reach 624 million tonnes.Luo further noted that a rising investment in 2011 would result in an increase in China's steel demand.If the year-on-year growth of the country's social fixed assets investment maintained itself at around 20 percent next year, China's crude steel apparent consumption would see an annual increase of 40 million to 50 million tonnes next year, said Luo.

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) - China's priority in the public health sector will shift from prevention and control of communicable diseases to treating chronic diseases during the next five years.Li Bin, an official with the Ministry of Health, made the statement during a regular press conference at the ministry on Friday.Li said China had given priority to controlling communicable diseases during the 11th five year program (2006-2010), and the health authority will now focus on chronic diseases during the 12th five year program (2011-2015).According to statistics from the ministry, cardio-cerebral vascular disease has become the major threat to the health of the Chinese public. The incidence rate of chronic diseases in China has reached 20 percent, which meant 260 million people have been diagnosed as suffering from chronic diseases.It was also reported during the press conference that China had retrofitted toilets in 7.83 million rural households into more hygienic facilities as of the end of November this year.
