TAMPA, Fla. — A kitten in Florida is recovering after being stabbed in the face with a dart.Jennifer Tate volunteers with the St. Francis Society Animal Rescue and she can’t wait to bring home the kitten.“We saved a cat about two and half years ago that had been shot with an arrow and we named him Sir Robin. So, we thought it would be appropriate to name her Maid Marian, the love interest of Sir Robin Hood," said Tate.Hillsborough County Animal Services is trying to find out who’s responsible for hurting the cat.“The person that found her said she could not open her mouth, so it had pierced all the way through and actually into part of her throat," Tate said.Someone found the kitten on Aimiee Court, south of Bearss Avenue in Tampa.“It’s horrific. How does somebody walk up to a cat and jam something into her face? And walk away. How do you sleep at night," said Tate.If Maid Marian is ready, she’ll have surgery Friday at Gulf Coast Veterinary Center.Tate will foster her, but eventually, the hope is the kitten will be adopted.“We want her to have the best life and to be able to put this behind her. Surveillance footage obtained from a Las Vegas phone store shows video shows an iPhone exploding on a desk while an employee sat just a couple feet away.The employee quickly jumped up to get help as the phone burned itself out on the desk in less than 20 seconds.The phone screen was being replaced after it cracked due to heat damage as the battery expanded.The store is not being identified.Paul Tartaglio owns Gadget Repair. While it wasn't his shop, he says he has seen badly damaged batteries due to heat in the Las Vegas desert.He has seen a phone explode before but "It takes a lot for it to explode."The biggest issue he sees the temperatures rise into the triple digits in Las Vegas are the cracked screens from warped batteries. "Over time, the batteries heat up and bloat," Tartaglio said. "The problem is when it bloats up just a little bit, it can cause your screen to crack a lot easier."While he says it's extremely difficult to predict when a battery could explode, Tartaglio said the key is to keep phones out of direct sunlight during the summer.Not only can it lead to explosions in extreme cases, but it can also shorten the life of the battery —especially after the phone issues a temperature warning a few times.Smart phone users should also avoid overcharging devices, which can generate extra heat in the battery.Tartaglio also recommends people use replacement batteries directly from the phone's manufacturer, saying they are often more reliable than aftermarket batteries and typically aren't any more expensive. 1597

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- A Terre Haute police officer who died following an exchange of gunfire with a homicide suspect Friday night has been identified as Patrolman Rob Pitts, a 16-year veteran of the force.Pitts and three other officers with the Terre Haute Police Department were looking for a potential homicide suspect Friday afternoon at the Garden Quarter apartment complex.State police say the suspect started shooting at the officers from the second floor of an apartment building and the officers returned fire. Patrolman Pitts was wounded and later died at Terre Haute Regional hospital.The suspect was located around 9:15 p.m. when members of the Terre Haute Police Department SWAT team entered the apartment building.He also died from his wounds. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Millions of Americans have now gone weeks without increased federal unemployment insurance benefits as Congress continues to weigh replacement options."Every day we wait, another Floridian gets closer to eviction, closer to homelessness and people's lives are really on the line," Florida State Rep. Anna Eskamani (D-Orange County) said.An executive order signed by President Donald Trump aims to give unemployed Americans 0 a week, but states would need to provide a quarter of that money. On top of that, it's unclear if Trump's decision to pull billion in federal money from FEMA is even legal, as the power of the purse constitutionally falls under Congress.With the legality of the order up in the air, some Republican state governors, like Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, are hesitant to adopt the policy."There's only so much you can do through executive action," Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said. "We're now at a point where the President is just doing that, but I want to make sure there's no legal risk for us if someone were to challenge this, then we'd be left on the hook."The concerns haven't stopped Iowa, New Mexico, Arizona and Louisiana from applying, according to a tweet from Trump. South Dakota has reportedly declined to take up the plan."I think there's a lot of red flags on the President's executive order despite the fact that we all desperately need to see this increase in dollars," Eskamani said.DeSantis told reporters during a press conference that they are considering taking out a loan through the Department of Labor to raise the weekly benefit amount for Floridians. It's a compromise Eskamani says state lawmakers are interested in making, but also wishes Congress would strike a deal first."The best-case scenario would be Congress reconvening to come up with a solution and make that compromise, even if it means putting other issues on the table to figure out the unemployment piece," Eskamani said. "This should be a moment of no partisanship.
