NEW YORK, July 15 (Xinhua) -- A Gallup survey released on Friday found a total of 59 percent of Americans support a ban on smoking in all public places.The July 7-10 survey among 1,016 national adults showed a change in the public's attitude toward public smoking ban. In 2001, when Gallup first asked about a ban on public smoking, 39 percent were in favor, an attitude that stayed roughly the same through 2007.At the same time, the poll also found that fewer than two in 10 people supported the idea of making smoking totally illegal.According to the American Lung Association, 27 states plus the District of Columbia have passed comprehensive smoke-free laws. A New York City law bans smoking in virtually all public places, including outdoor plazas and beaches.

BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China's National Energy Administration (NEA) announced Sunday that the country's total electric power consumption rose 12.2 percent from a year earlier to 2.69 trillion kilowatt-hours (kwh) during the first seven months of this year.In July alone, power consumption was up 11.8 percent year-on-year to 434.9 billion kwh, according to the NEA.During the first seven months, power consumption in the country's primary industries rose 5.1 percent year-on-year to reach 59.1 billion kwh; power use in secondary industries totaled 2.0253 trillion kwh, up 11.9 percent; consumption in tertiary industries surged 15.5 percent to reach 285.3 billion kwh.Meanwhile, consumption by residents in both urban and rural areas rose 12 percent to 317.2 billion kwh.Power generated by China's newly-built power plants reached 41.23 million kilowatts during the January-July period, of which 7.69 million kilowatts was hydro-generated and 27.74 million was coal-fire generated.

Arianespace had planned six Ariane 5 missions through 2011.The satellite Arabsat-5C was developed for the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) to provide satellite capacity in both C-band and Ka-band frequencies for a wide range of communications services.Jointly produced by Europe's EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, it will be positioned at 20 degree East orbital location to cover the Middle East and Africa.Manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corporation of the United States, SES-2 will join the fleet of European satellite telecommunications operator SES, and is to be positioned at 87 degree West for coverage over North America and the Caribbean.Both Arabsat-5C and SES-2 have life-spans as long as 15 years.This Ariane 5 dual-passenger mission was postponed from Tuesday due to local strikes of French Guiana workers.Founded in 1980 as the world's first launch service and solutions company, Arianespace planned to achieve six Ariane 5 missions through 2011. BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhuanet) -- A new study showed that environmental factors may play a larger role in the development of autism than previously recognized, according to media reports on Tuesday.The new study in the Archives of General Psychiatry looked at 192 pairs of twins in California. It found autism was surprisingly common in fraternal twins, despite the fact that they don’t share as many of the same genes as identical twins, suggesting that something in their mutual life circumstances may be playing at least as strong a role as genetics.The study, which will likely be followed up with similar studies of twins and other siblings, could  force a dramatic swing in the focus of research into the developmental disorder.“It looks like some shared environmental factors play a role in autism, and the study really points toward factors that are early in life that affect the development of the child,” said study researcher Joachim Hallmayer, MD, an associate professor of psychiatry at Stanford University in California.
