ATHENS, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Saturday made a five-point proposal on boosting ties with Greece during talks with his Greek counterpart George Papandreou, stressing that China is willing to work with the European country to combat the lingering financial crisis.Wen arrived in Athens earlier in the day, starting a three-day official visit to the country, the first by a Chinese premier in 24 years.Papandreou held a grand welcoming ceremony for Wen after the Chinese premier's arrival.Wen said both countries were great civilizations in the history and the people of the two countries have always been amicable to each other. BEIJING, Oct. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's top legislature on Thursday ended its bimonthly session, adopting a series of bills including the long-awaited social insurance law that had been reviewed by lawmakers four times in almost three years.The law that aims to prevent the improper use of social security funds was first submitted to the legislature in December, 2007, following a scandal in Shanghai involving 3.7 billion yuan (502.3 million U.S. dollars) of social security funds.The law is to take effect on July 1, 2011.In a proposal made by the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee on formulating the country's 12th Five-Year Program (2011-2015) on National Economic and Social Development issued Wednesday, the social security system is set to be improved.The National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee also voted to adopt the law on law application to civil relationships involving foreign interests, and the revised Organic Law of Villagers' Committees, regarding rural people having greater powers to remove villagers' committee members and to convene meetings to decide village affairs.Also adopted at the close of this legislative session were the amendments to the Law on Deputies to the NPC and Local People's Congresses at Various Levels, which further specify the rights and duties of lawmakers.Lawmakers also adopted a decision to appoint Vice President Xi Jinping as vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC) of the People's Republic of China.Born in 1953, Xi was appointed by the CPC Central Committee on Oct. 18 as vice-chairman of the CMC of the party.Xi has served in a number of positions related to the armed forces and military reserve affairs during his previous tenures at national and local levels.The top legislature also expelled Li Qihong, former deputy secretary of Zhongshan Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China in southern Guangdong Province and former mayor of Zhongshan City, from the top legislature on suspicion of "seriously violating disciplines" concerning economic activities.

BEIJING, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) - China's gross domestic product (GDP) will grow about 9 percent next year, but the economy will be challenged by rising labor costs, liquidity problems and difficulty in sustaining rapid growth in the long run, a senior researcher at the country's top think-tank said Saturday.Liu Shijin, deputy director of the Development Research Center of the State Council, or China's Cabinet, spoke at the OTO Fortune Forum held by the Bank of Communications.As for the year 2010, Liu predicted an annual 10-percent GDP growth due to the economic slowdown in China during the second half of the year.He said China's exports and investments would be much better in 2011 than this year, but the growth rate of consumption would pull back slightly from this year's boom, making 9 percent growth "very likely".To keep its economy on track for sustained growth, however, China still faces three major challenges in the long term, according to Liu's research."The first challenge comes from the rapid rise of labor costs in the country," Liu said, warning: "The competitiveness of Chinese companies will be threatened by rising labor costs unless they find a new source of growth, such as innovation."The second challenge is from liquidity as China's currency, the renminbi, and other non-U.S. dollar currencies are under forced appreciation pressure following the Federal Reserve's considering a new round of quantitative easing of the monetary policy, he said.The greenback, which serves as the world's reserve currency, tumbled against most major currencies this week on expected easing move by the Federal Reserve to pump more money into the U.S. economy next month.Meanwhile, China's economic stimulus package also injected excessive liquidity into the market, pushing up prices of commodities, equities and other land-related assets or resources, he added.The third major challenge concerns whether China can maintain its quick economic expansion in the future, he said.According to Liu's forecast, in the next three to five years China's GDP growth will slow to a moderate speed of around 7 percent from its current 10 percent."Actually, we don't have to be too worried about an economy with moderate expansion," he said, "because the current economic growth is too high for China."

WARSAW, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) -- China's top political advisor Jia Qinglin pledged here Tuesday to enhance mutual understanding and economic ties with Poland.Jia, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee, made the remarks when meeting Bogdan Borusewicz, speaker of the Polish Senate.During their talks, Jia hailed the traditional friendly cooperation between China and Poland since the two states established diplomatic ties 61 years ago, including the frequent exchange between the leaderships, legislative bodies and government departments.Poland has been China's largest trade partner in the central and east Europe as bilateral trade for the first time exceed one billion U.S. dollars in 2008, 12 times more than that in 1998, Chinese official figures show.Jia applauded Poland's participation in the Shanghai Expo, and called for strengthening coordination in international affairs.Jia proposed the two states to further exchange between leaderships and at the grass-root level to bolster mutual understanding and mutual trust, to expand economic and trade cooperation such as two-way investment, to properly handle differences and resolve such differences through dialogue, especially to substantially take care of each other's core interests and major concerns.Labeling China as "Poland's largest partner in Asia", Borusewicz applauded bilateral ties and cooperation in various fields, vowing to further promote bilateral ties.Jia and Borusewicz both pledged to enhance exchange and cooperation between the CPPCC and the Polish Senate.Jia arrived here Tuesday afternoon for an official good-will visit.
