ALEXANDRIA, Ky. — One northern Kentucky family honored their lost wife and mother by paying it forward to brighten the morning of dozens of people.The Peters family celebrated what they called "Family Friday," where every Friday they put aside distractions and did something together."Our family began our Family Friday in the drive-thru at Dunkin'," 11-year-old Davis Peter said."Every Friday, especially when he was out of school, we would make sure we would enjoy time together as a family," Barry Peters, Davis' father, said. Then, in June, Laura Peters, Barry's wife and Davis' mom, died after going into cardiac arrest at 41 years old. "Since then we have learned to walk in a new normal," Barry said. Barry and Davis wanted to honor Laura, so they made a trip to Dunkin'.Laura "ran on Dunkin'," Davis said, getting coffee there at least four times a week. With that in mind, Davis and Barry did some math to figure out how much Laura would have spent at Dunkin' over six months."Since it's been six months, that would be four medium coffees a week at a piece for the last 26 weeks, equaling 8," Davis said. Barry and Davis then made a trip to Dunkin' with that money."I need you to take the 8; that's how much coffee she would have drank over the last six months," Davis said. "I need you to pay for everyone behind us until it runs out."Barry and Davis then watched from the parking lot as cars rolled up and ordered their morning cup of Joe."Every time somebody pulled up and we'd say, 'You're paid for,' everybody's mouth just fell," Amanda Jones, a shift leader at Dunkin', said. "Then when we told them why, what had happened, everybody was teary-eyed.""I don't remember one person who didn't honk their horn and be thankful," Davis said. After issuing previous guidance that encouraged schools to close in areas with high transmission of the coronavirus, the CDC is now emphasizing that schools reopen this fall.The guidance issued on Thursday is in line with a Trump administration priority to reopen schools this fall.“It is critically important for our public health to open schools this fall,” said CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield. “The CDC resources released today will help parents, teachers and administrators make practical, safety-focused decisions as this school year begins. I know this has been a difficult time for our Nation’s families. School closures have disrupted normal ways of life for children and parents, and they have had negative health consequences on our youth. CDC is prepared to work with K-12 schools to safely reopen while protecting the most vulnerable.”Now in areas with, as the CDC calls it, "substantial, uncontrolled transmission" of the coronavirus, "Schools should work closely with local health officials to make decisions on whether to maintain school operations. The health, safety, and wellbeing of students, teachers, staff and their families is the most important consideration in determining whether school closure is a necessary step. Communities can support schools staying open by implementing strategies that decrease a community’s level of transmission. However, if community transmission levels cannot be decreased, school closure is an important consideration."In areas with substantial, controlled transmission, "Significant mitigation strategies are necessary." In addition, social distancing and face covering policies should be implemented, the CDC said.Previous guidance called for schools in areas with substantial community transmission (the CDC did not distinguish between uncontrolled or controlled) to, "Implement extended school dismissals (e.g., dismissals for longer than two weeks). This longer-term, and likely broader-reaching, dismissal strategy is intended to slow transmission rates of COVID-19 in the community. During extended school dismissals, also cancel extracurricular group activities, school-based afterschool programs, and large events."In previous guidance, the CDC called on schools to keep students 6 feet apart. But many classrooms do not have the space to properly socially distance students. The Trump administration’s response appears to be a 5 billion request to Congress. President Donald Trump said that the funds, in part, could be used for schools to open additional spaces and hire additional staff in order to help space students.The CDC said that the “best available evidence from countries that have opened schools indicates that COVID-19 poses low risks to school-aged children, at least in areas with low community transmission, and suggests that children are unlikely to be major drivers of the spread of the virus.”But that guidance contradicts a South Korean study published by the CDC earlier this week.The study said that while children under age 9 were less likely to spread the virus, youth ages 10 through 19 were just as likely as adults of spreading the virus.The study also found that closing schools in several Chinese cities, including Wuhan, that school closures and social distancing significantly reduced the rate of COVID-19 among contacts of school-aged children.“The role of household transmission of SARS-CoV-2 amid reopening of schools and loosening of social distancing underscores the need for a time-sensitive epidemiologic study to guide public health policy,” the researchers wrote.In its new guidance, the CDC said that extended school closures are harmful to children and can lead to severe learning loss, and the need for in-person instruction is particularly important for students with heightened behavioral needs.The American Federation of Teachers this week pointed toward a three-point plan that the US should implement for reopening schools.“Our plan details three conditions essential for schools to reopen,” wrote Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers. “First, the average daily community infection rate among those tested for the coronavirus must be very low. (New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has required the rate not to exceed 5 percent for at least 14 days.) Second, schools must employ public health protocols, including 6-feet social distancing, masks, deep cleaning and handwashing stations. Third, adequate resources must be available to enact these safeguards, including funding for additional nurses, guidance counselors and teachers to reduce class size.”But the CDC also weighed the concerns of the coronavirus against providing physical activity, food and safety for students. The CDC said studies project that the childhood obesity rate would increase by 2.4% if schools remained closed through December.This guidance comes as cases in the US steadily increased earlier this month, prompting coronavirus death counts to rise in recent days. Amazon is giving Whole Foods shoppers an early gift for the holidays.The grocer announced Wednesday it's slashing prices again, this time on several "holiday staples," including sweet potatoes, canned pumpkin and turkey.If you're an Amazon Prime member, you'll pay even less for turkey: Whole Foods slashed turkey prices to .99 per pound (compared to .49 for non-Prime members), or .99 per pound for an organic turkey (.49 for non-Prime members).To redeem the discount, Amazon is offering a printable coupon only accessible to Prime members on its website."These are the latest new lower prices in our ongoing integration and innovation with Amazon, and we're just getting started," Whole Foods CEO John Mackey said in a prepared statement. A woman known to authorities as a prostitute is accused of setting up one of her Johns to be robbed.Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office detectives say Christina Chiesa, 36, had sex with a man for money and then signaled for Robert Jones, 26, and two other men to steal from him. Surveillance video captured the victim having sex with Chiesa behind a dumpster behind a shopping plaza in suburban West Palm Beach on April 10, according to an arrest report.Jones is seen on video walking up to them, pulling out a knife, swinging it at the victim, the report states. “I’m gonna open you up, give me the money,” Jones allegedly told the victim.The victim told detectives he was able to fight off Jones until Chiesa signaled for two other men to come over. He said the men punched and cut him in the face. He said one of the wounds was so deep that he needed stitches. The suspects stole 0 out of his wallet and his beach cruiser bicycle. He said he was able to grab his wallet back from Chiesa.Days later, a deputy recognized Chiesa and Jones from the surveillance video. The two other men were not identified in the report.Chiesa was arrested on April 11 and Jones was arrested on April 13. They are being held at the Palm Beach County Jail without bond. They are facing charges of robbery and aggravated battery.Chiesa has been convicted of prostitution three times in Palm Beach County. 1435

ALPINE, Calif. (KGTV) - Six months after the West Fire ripped through Alpine, residents still have an immense amount of work to do to rebuild.Colin Campbell's parents owned the Campbell Creek Ranch for 13 years before it burned in July. Campbell spoke with 10News in August at a benefit that raised at least ,000 for the victims of the fire.Sunday, on the six month anniversary of the fire, Campbell walked through the ranch, lending a window into his memories.Surrounding him, the ranch lay much the same as the day after the fire. Ashes and bricks covering the foundation of his parent's home, the pool drained, the white fence lining the driveway, melted. As he looked around him, he saw the ghost of what had been.He looked at the pool, and spoke of an old pact he made with his two sons, "at any time, on the coldest day of the year, I would plunge into the pool, and they always took it upon me to do it, and their timing was impeccable," he said laughing. His sons and wife would jump in after him.At the house, his fondest memory was of a train set his parents built for his boys. He described the wooden track built at knee height, right in front of the vast fireplace to ensure the kids were warm while playing happily for hours, "we spoiled them with trains."Over the past six months, volunteers and family members sifted through soot, unearthing treasures."Man it absolutely has been meaningful," Campbell said poignantly, "in fact there has been a picture of my wife, our wedding 23 years ago, that somehow, someway came out of the rubble."He was also struck by the signs of hope sprouting around the grounds, "you can see now it is greening up, in the mountainsides, they are growing back, and it's just incredible that the environment, they just reinvigorate themselves." He said the boys are young teens now and learning, while cleaning up the ranch, how nature prevails.Campbell's fight to protect the property is not over. "The erosion is our main concern," he said. With help from local leaders, sand bags held the weak soil mostly in place after recent rain.Campbell said he's incredibly thankful for the continued support of the community, and hopes in the next two years to rebuild and move his parents back onto the ranch. 2256
