SHANGHAI, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) -- A total of 1.03 million people visited the Shanghai World Exposition on Saturday, a record number since the Expo opened. The total number also exceeded an earlier record.The Expo had received some 64.62 million visitors by the end of Saturday, the 169th day since the event began on May 1. The previous record was set during the 1970 Osaka World Expo in Japan, which about 64 million people attended over a six month period.Attendance may be increasing since this is the first weekend after the week-long National Day holiday and the second to last weekend before the final seven designated days from Oct. 25-31.Since early this morning, the Expo' s public transportation system has been under great pressure as visitors have been seen throughout the Expo site.Visitors needed to queue up for more than one hour before being admitted to most pavilions. Some popular pavilions, including the Oil Pavilion and Space Home Pavilion, stopped visitors from queuing up by 4 or 5 p.m. because of the large crowds.Many visitors could only walk around, take pictures outside of pavilions, or have picnics at rest area. Further, all parades were canceled due to the large number of visitors.Zhou Qian and Dai Shishi from Hangzhou described the long queues as "horrible". But Zhou said she had been prepared for the situation as they visited seven pavilions, including the Egyptian and Spanish pavilions.A visitor surnamed Zhang and her daughter, a high school student in Shanghai, entered the site at 11 a.m. but had only visited three pavilions by 6:30 p.m."And all of them are small ones. It's not a proper time to come, but it's not easy for my daughter to be free," Zhang said.A series of measures have been taken to deal with the situation, according to the Bureau of Shanghai World Expo.When the number exceeded 700,000 visitors, organizers made announcements to visitors through the World Expo official website, TV Station, mobile televisions, and telecommunication operators.Visitors were persuaded to avoid peak times on televisions seen on subways in the morning, and in the afternoons they were advised not to continue entering the site today.

BEIJING, Oct. 30 (Xinhua) -- Vice Premier Li Keqiang has said China would advance practical cooperation with the European Union (EU) in all areas.Li made the remarks Friday when meeting with a delegation from the European People's Party and European Democrats (EPP-ED), which is the largest group in the European Parliament.China hopes the two sides work together to expand common interests, respect each other's core interests and major concerns, so as to promote the China-EU relationship in a maturer and more steady way, Li said during the meeting.Since the two sides forged diplomatic ties 35 years ago, China and the EU had scored leap-forward development in bilateral relationship, which was exerting more and more influence to the world peace and development, Li said.Noting inter-party contacts constitute an important part of China-EU relations, Li, also member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said the CPC is willing to deepen dialogue and exchanges with the EPP-ED.Joseph Daul, chairman of the EPP-ED and also head of the delegation, said he is willing to cement inter-party exchanges with the CPC and push forward the EU-China relations.

MUSCAT, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- A top Chinese delegation will sign agreements on two-way investment and personnel training with Oman amid efforts to deepen the cooperation between China and the Gulf oil-rich Sultanate, Chinese ambassador to Oman Pan Weifang said Friday.Jia Qinglin, China's top political advisor, will pay a three- day good-will visit to Oman starting from Saturday. This is a visit of the highest level in 11 years in the history of bilateral relations, ambassador Pan told Xinhua ahead of the visit.The delegation will meet Omani Sultan Qabus bin Said al-Said, deputy prime minister and other ministers and sign the important agreements during the visit, he said."I am very pleased to see that the senior Chinese leader will meet with His Majesty Sultan Qabus as the friendly Omani people are celebrating the 40th National Day," Pan said. TIANJIN, Oct. 7 (Xinhua) -- China's top climate change official Thursday called for compromise from all parties to seek the biggest common ground during the UN climate talks while developed and developing countries remained divided on many issues.Parties at the talks should rebuild mutual trust and improve sense of responsibility as climate change is a global issue affecting every country, Xie Zhenhua, vice minister of the National Development and Reform Commission, told the press on the sidelines of a new round of UN climate talks held in Tianjin from Oct. 4 to 9."The best result of the global climate talks may be a solution that dissatisfies every one but is accepted by all," he said. "To reach the result, every party needs compromise and work to find the biggest common ground. If one country refuses to do anything and ask others to do many, this is definitely not acceptable."When asked about one of the most controversial issue on how to manage the fast start fund, Xie said, as a developing country, China is fully qualified to receive funds and technical supports from developed countries."But, provided that the amount of current fast start fund is much less than what developing countries need, China would not compete with those who need the money most such as the least developing countries and island countries," he said.Jonathan Pershing, who leads the U.S. negotiators at the Tianjin meeting, said on Thursday that there should be a differentiation between offering finance for developing countries as some countries clearly have enormous capabilities, even though they are listed in the developing country list, while some countries, although in the developing country list, have virtually no capabilities.Countries like China can do a great deal, and have made very clear that they intend to do a great deal, he told reporters."It (China) has made commitment that was made on a series of actions on intensity, on renewable energy and on forests that are examples of what a really powerful country with enormous commitment can deliver," he said.Xie Zhenhua said China will also provide as much assistance to these countries as it is able to, through South-South cooperation."We are not only saying it but have also begun doing it. In the past few years, we have provided training programs to people from least developed countries and worked with them in programs to cope with climate changes," Xie said.However, Xie strongly argued that developed countries should actually add new money in the fast start fund as a majority of current identified fast start fund was in fact included in the existing Official Development Assistance (ODA).
