SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A newly discovered comet flew past Earth early on Saturday, giving those who awoke early enough to catch it quite a show.Comet Neowise was spotted by a NASA telescope by the same name on March 27, according to NASA. Since then, the space agency says the comet has been spotted by several NASA spacecraft, including Parker Solar Probe, NASA’s Solar and Terrestrial Relations Observatory, the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory, and astronauts aboard the International Space Station.NASA says the comet came within Mercury's orbit on July 3, where the sun caused dust and gas to burn off its surface and create an even bigger debris trail.Neowise, which measures about three miles across, will be visible in Earth's Northern Hemisphere until mid-August, when it will change course and head toward the outer solar system, NASA says.For the next few days, the comet will be visible about an hour before sunrise in the northeastern sky in the U.S., NASA adds. Depending on local conditions, Neowise may be visible shortly after sunset on July 11 or July 12."In its discovery images, Comet Neowise appeared as a glowing, fuzzy dot moving across the sky even when it was still pretty far away," said Amy Mainzer, Neowise principal investigator at the University of Arizona. "As soon as we saw how close it would come to the Sun, we had hopes that it would put on a good show."In San Diego County, at least one stargazer was able to catch the comet streak across the early morning sky. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego college student out for a run was attacked by a swarm of bees — stung at least a hundred times — in the North County.Jaeyoung Choi tells ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena that he was running on a bike path near SR-56 and Carmel Valley Road on Aug. 4, when he started noticing the bees."Next thing I know, a couple bees are hitting me thought it was no big deal and then there were a lot more bees and then a lot more bees and then all of a sudden I'm getting swarmed," Choi said.During the attack, Choi said he saw a man in a beekeeper outfit and tried to get help from him, though he was unsuccessful."Did not speak any English at all the beekeeper so I couldn't get the guys info or even know if he's licensed or not, just one guy there, just really weird," Choi said.Eventually, a cyclist came across Choi and called 911, and Choi was rushed to Scripps Memorial Hospital. There, he learned he had been stung more than 100 times."At the hospital, they pulled out around 150 stingers or so basically swelled up to a balloon," said Choi.Choi says a week since the attack, his body is still reacting and breaking out in hives. He's also still dealing with the medical bills from the incident."I just can't imagine if it were somebody younger or a lot older I definitely think they would've left in a body bag," Choi said.James McDonald, a professional beekeeper and owns Encinitas Bee Company, said based on the bees' behaviors, he believes they were a form of Africanized "Killer Bees," adding that San Diego is home to plenty of them."They're called 'killer bees' for a reason, they kill people," McDonald said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A newly-released poll shows key San Diego County races are undecided ahead of the June 5 primary election.Many of the 1,100 voters questioned in the scientific 10News/Union-Tribune poll showed no clear preference for non-partisan positions including District Attorney, Sheriff, and County Assessor.DISTRICT ATTORNEYSummer Stephan, the interim San Diego County District Attorney, held 35 percent of the vote to Genevieve Jones-Wright’s 22 percent. Stephan led among Republicans, white voters, and those over 35 years old. Jones-Wright led among Democrats, and Latino and younger voters. 43 percent of voters were undecided in the race.Stephan was appointed by the Board of Supervisors last year to fill the remainder for Bonnie Dumanis’ term. Jones-Wright is a Deputy Public Defender. The two have met in several public forums.  SAN DIEGO COUNTY SHERIFFIncumbent Sheriff Bill Gore led Sheriff’s Department commander Dave Meyers by 10 percent in the poll. However, 33 percent of voters were undecided.Gore had stronger support from senior citizens, white voters and conservatives.  COUNTY ASSESSOR/RECORDER/COUNTY CLERKThe countywide election pitting incumbent Ernest Dronenburg Jr. against ethics attorney Matt Strabone shows voters were essentially tied, with a 6.3 percent margin of error. Dronenburg held 20 percent of the vote to Strabone’s 17 percent.An overwhelming 63 percent of voters were undecided.  VOTER BREAKDOWN84 percent of those surveyed said they were registered to vote in California. 14 percent were not, and 2 percent were not sure.About half of San Diegans said they would definitely vote in the June 5 election. About a fourth said they would likely vote. A combined 11 percent said they were unlikely or certain not to vote.According to the Registrar of Voters, 75 percent of those eligible to vote in the county are registered. Of those registered, 37 percent are registered Democrats, 29 percent are registered Republicans and another 29 percent are Independent. As far as voter turnout for the June Primary, over the last 30 years, the highest number of voters to turn out was 40 percent in 1990.  DO POLITICAL PARTIES MAKE A DIFFERENCE?The Survey USA pollsters asked San Diegans if political parties impacted how they planned to vote in the elections. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A landmark Supreme Court ruling today extended workplace protections for LGBTQ workers nationwide.Years ago, and a few months into a new job in San Diego, Lina Craychee says she came out as transgender and was promptly transferred from a store location to a corporate job."My boss told me I had to. They wouldn't let me present as female in the store level, because it would hurt business," said Craychee.Craychee says she kept silent and accepted the transfer because she needed the job. It's the type of silence she hopes will fade away after an historic Supreme Court ruling. By a 6-3 majority, the court extended 1964 Civil Rights Act protections to LGBTQ employees, who now can't be fired or discriminated against in the workplace because of their sexual orientation.While California protects LGBTQ workers against discrimination, nearly 30 states do not."Huge feeling of relief and victory," said Eddie Reynoso, executive director of the Equality Business Alliance in San Diego.Last fall, Reynoso camped for 72 hours on the Supreme Court steps for the opportunity to witness the arguments."In terms of impact, this will be bigger than the marriage equality ruling," said Reynoso.Reynoso says the ruling sends a powerful message across the country."Ultimately it means the workplace is going to be a safer place. LGBT workers will have an affirming work environment," said Reynoso.While this ruling is directed at the workplace, experts say this could open to door for other challenges involving LGBTQ discrimination.
