BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- China's weather forecast authorities on Sunday said the heat that had been bearing down on many parts of the country would continue for a few more days.Sweltering weather, with temperatures over 35 degrees Celsius, could be expected in at least 13 provinces and regions across China, the National Meteorological Center said.In Beijing, the local meteorological bureau upgraded the heat alert on Sunday from blue to yellow, two steps below the top alert. BEIJING, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- China and Switzerland Saturday marked the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties at a reception in Beijing.Addressing the occasion, senior Chinese official Liu Qi said China hopes to take the opportunity of the 60th anniversary to enhance mutual political trust and cooperation with Switzerland in various fields.Liu, member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, said China attaches great importance to developing friendly relations with Switzerland, one of the first Western countries to recognize the People's Republic of China.Currently China is Switzerland's second largest trading partner in Asia, and Switzerland is a major partner of China in Europe, said Liu.Doris Leuthard, President of the Swiss Confederation and Head of Federal Department of Economic Affairs, said Swiss-China relationship has deeply developed since the establishment of the diplomatic ties on Sept. 14, 1950.Leuthard said the two economies are complementary and can achieve win-win results in fields such as environment, machinery and financial services.Leuthard is paying a working visit to China from Aug. 10 to 15, at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao.

SHANGHAI, July 15 (Xinhua) -- Argentine President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner paid a visit here Thursday as the last leg of her China trip.Shanghai was more prosperous and beautiful now, said Kirchner, who came to the city in 2004 for the first time, in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng Thursday morning.Over 40 heads of states and governments from various nations had visited Shanghai since the opening of the Shanghai World Expo on May 1, Han said, adding that 15 state and government chiefs were expected to attend the closing ceremony scheduled for the end of October.Kirchner said the Expo was a "real world gathering" and reiterated Argentina's support to the event.One hundred and eighty-nine countries and fifty-seven international organizations have participated the Expo.Deeply impressed by the sound construction and administration of Shanghai, Kirchner said the cities in other countries including those of Argentina should learn from Shanghai's development."We will introduce Shanghai's experience to Argentina after this China visit," she added.Kirchner visited the Chinese and Argentine Pavilions after the meeting.She will leave Shanghai and conclude her China visit later Thursday night.

BEIJING, July 6 (Xinhua) -- Hundreds of middle school students from Nanjing City, east China's Jiangsu Province, came to the Memorial Hall of the Chinese People's War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression in Beijing Tuesday to mourn martyrs killed in the war."We came here to keep the past firmly in mind and cherish the present peace," said a student from the Second Foreign Language School of Nanjing.Temperatures in most parts of Beijing had risen to more than 39 degrees centigrade but even so the memorial hall was crowded with visitors from all over the country.The full-scale anti-aggression war started on July 7, 1937, when the Imperial Japanese Army bombarded the town of Wanping in suburban Beijing and advanced on the Lugou Bridge. The No. 29 Nationalists Corps fought hard to resist the siege, marking the official start of an eight-year resistance war.The Chinese resistance played a decisive role in inflicting heavy casualties on the Japanese. The Chinese people paid dearly for the victory, with an estimated 35 million casualties, including military and civilian, dead and wounded.The memorial has received more than 15 million visitors since it opened in 1987, said Li Zongyuan, deputy curator of the memorial hall.

ZHOUQU, Gansu, Aug. 16 (Xinhua) -- A new round of rains started to pound the mudslide-flattened Chinese town of Zhouqu Monday night, which has increased the possibilities of new mudslides occurring.The weather bureau in the Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, which administers Zhouqu County, issued a rainstorm warning Monday night, warning about the likelihood of new geological disasters.Rains started pounding Zhouqu at around 10 p.m., which, according to Gansu's provincial weather bureau, could last for five days and precipitation in some regions may reach 60 to 80 mm.The massive landslide on August 8 killed 1,254 people as of 4 p.m.Monday, with 490 still missing.Residents are ferried by a boat in landslide-hit Zhouqu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in northwest China's Gansu Province, Aug. 16, 2010. Large-scaled ponding area still remained in the county although the flood has subsidised. Meanwhile, rescue headquarters in Zhouqu has started implementing a disaster prevention contingency plan, which was drawn up on August 11.The plan asks rescue teams and residents alike to move out of mudslide-prone areas if heavy rainfalls pelt the region.According to the plan, tents built in these areas should be removed immediately. Also, cars are not allowed to park in these areas.
