And that was long before the pandemic.Social isolation has also been associated with about a 50 percent increased risk of dementia, among other serious medical conditions, according to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine as cited by the CDC.It’s an issue that’s only been made worse by COVID-19.“All of these incredibly important protective measures that are put in place are further isolating older adults,” Fischer said. And these furry friends, designed with older adults in mind, bark, meow, and react to your attention just like real animals.“Pets in general have always helped seniors and most people get out of a funk. Coming home to that dog that’s just looking at you and wagging its tail, it’s hard to feel upset because that's unconditional love,” Catherine Baines-Sobczak, a licensed marriage family therapist with the HealthOne crisis assessment team, said.“Essentially it’s a perception of not feeling connected to other people, feeling unsupported or feeling that you’re misunderstood,” she said. She said beyond the online games, book clubs, and phone calls, animals provide something special.“With seniors it's difficult to find things to care for that give you that immediate reaction, so those pets...they do that,” she explained. “Having something to hold that’s tactile, that's soft, that may bring up memories of past pets they've had...that could help them feel less lonely.”Decreasing the sense of loneliness has other health benefits too.“Their memory is also impaired by loneliness, you don't have those outside triggers to remind you of things and to stay connected,” Baines-Sobczak said.As we find new ways to connect with our older loved ones without putting their health at risk, the demand for companion pets, which are sold online, continues to bloom.“I think like most skeptics, the second you see an older adult receive one of these, immediately name it and interact with it like they've had it forever, it’s magical. (KGTV) — Whale watchers off the coast of Dana Point were recently treated to the sighting of a lifetime.A rare gray orca calf was spotted swimming in a pod of whales by a pilot, before the message was relayed to Capt. Todd Mansur of Dana Wharf Whale Watching.Mansur said the sighting by itself was a rare occasion on its own."The feeling you get when you get to see, not only orcas, but then to see that baby and how it stood out so much," Mansur recalls. "I've been doing this for longer than most people have been alive. And I have had killer whale encounters in Southern California less than 10 times."The gray orca is one of two that have recently been documented by scientists. The other was seen off the coast of British Columbia."There were people on the boat that were crying. That's how excited they were," Mansur said.Mansur says there's no way to know what gives the rare orca its gray color. It could be a gene or a disease."Unless we actually collect a DNA sample from all of them and scientifically match things up," Mansur said. "But for the passengers on board, it was the spot of a lifetime." 1117

(KGTV) - San Diego County leaders say a massive church gathering on the sand at Cardiff State Beach Sunday violated the health mandate to prevent the spread of COVID-19.The event featured music, prayer, and people getting baptized in the ocean.Alisha Goodman is the mom of two teenagers. She also ministers to three other teens from broken homes. They all went to the event together."It turned out to be way more than I would have ever imagined, or expected it to be. I think everyone has just been so suppressed for the past few months. It was an opportunity for us to get out and worship and be together and feel that presence of God that we haven't really had an opportunity to do," said Goodman.Pictures on social media captured huge crowds with little social distancing and not a lot of people wearing face coverings.Goodman says she felt safe."I think everybody was being fair with each other and social distancing within their immediate families and friends group, but there was some hugging and people who hadn't seen each other in a long time, they haven't seen each other in 4 months," said Goodman.The event was organized by Sean Feucht. He's a member of Bethel Church in Redding, but the church was not involved with Sunday's gathering.
