SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County Supervisor Nathan Fletcher and other local health and community leaders urged San Diegans to put their focus on the fight against the coronavirus instead of the restrictions placed on businesses due to the pandemic.During a Monday morning press conference, Fletcher specifically called out fellow Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristin Gaspar, who have been pushing for reopenings.“In particular Supervisors Jim Desmond and Kristen Gaspar are inciting a fight between government and small business. They’re exploiting the pain and suffering that small businesses are going through as a result of a global pandemic as a wedge for political gain. It is reckless and irresponsible leadership,” Fletcher said.Fletcher’s comments come as San Diego County inches towards the possibility of moving from the red tier into California’s most restrictive purple tier.In response to Fletcher’s remarks, Gaspar issued this statement:“This morning Supervisor Fletcher held a hellfire and brimstone press conference in which he ironically and incorrectly blamed me for playing politics with COVID. Let me set the record straight: I have never supported any approach to re-opening that was not specifically supported by our Public Health Officer and clinical leadership team. Supervisor Fletcher knows this but prefers to continue spreading this false narrative because he is actively running a campaign against me. I measured the distance between our office doors, and it is 7 feet, so he and I can actually have a socially distanced conversation anytime he isn’t holding a press conference. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Police are reminding families who may care for an at-risk loved one to have a plan if they become lost.Officers said Saturday that a woman named "Lupe" disappeared from her home recently and was lost before a neighbor who noticed her called police.SDPD Southern Division officer McClain responded to the call and stayed with Lupe as other officers searched the area to try and get her back home, according to police. An officer eventually found a residence with an open door, which was Lupe's home.Instead of transporting her back home in a police vehicle, and possibly confusing or scaring the woman, SDPD said McClain, "figured it was time to get his steps in and walked Lupe back to her residence." There, she was reunited with her family.SDPD said the incident highlighted the need for families to make sure loved ones with medical or mental issues have an ID bracelet with their basic information, address, and emergency contact if they become lost.The Alzheimer's Association says families can prevent a loved one from wandering away from home by identifying times they are likely to wander and plan activities, ensure basic meets are met, use devices to signal when a door or window opens, and regularly supervise them. The group says families can plan for the possibility of someone wandering away from home by asking neighbors to call if they see the person alone, know where a person could likely go to if they leave the home alone, and familiarize themselves with the neighborhood and any possible hazards there may be. 1568

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diegans posted images and updates about the fierce Valley Fire burning out of control in the Japatul Valley on Saturday night.Photos and videos shot from various locations around San Diego show a large ominous plume of smoke over the county. Others show videos of flames near the scene of the fire, and at least one local resident miles away from the fire documented ash falling from the sky.As of late Saturday night, fire officials said the blaze has scorched about 1,500 acres. Crews continue to battle the fire under harsh conditions, including strong winds and high heat. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego County health officials say the county’s contact tracing program has not been hampered by the same issues plaguing efforts in other areas like New York City, but there may be blind spots in the county’s data.One of the keys to successful contact tracing is eliciting a full list of close contacts from an individual who tests positive. A “close contact” is defined as someone who was within 6 feet of an infected person for at least 15 minutes, beginning 48 hours before illness appeared and lasting until the patient was isolated.It’s sensitive work, but the breadth of that list is critical to suppression efforts. “By identifying or ‘tracing’ the contacts of people infected with COVID-19, we can identify other individuals who might be infected, test those individuals for infection, treat those who are also infected and trace their contacts as well,” the county says on its website.However, in New York City, only 35% of the residents who tested positive actually provided information about their close contacts to tracers during the first two weeks of June, the New York Times reported.That means that even if tracers were able to reach virtually all of the individuals on their list, they would still likely have a vastly incomplete picture of those who may be at risk.That’s where San Diego’s first potential blind spot comes in. Unlike New York City, San Diego County is not actively monitoring the percentage of individuals who provide information on close contacts to tracers, County Medical Director Dr. Eric McDonald said Monday.“We don’t specifically follow that metric,” he said. “We think we’re probably doing better than the numbers you hear from New York. It’s difficult though for us to drill down on that specifically.”Instead, the county bases one of its triggers on attempts to reach the close contacts it has on file, regardless of how complete or incomplete that list may be, and regardless of whether tracers actually got in touch with those individuals -- a second potential blind spot.McDonald acknowledged that tracers are often given out-of-date or inaccurate contact information, and must rely on public records and other sources to try to reach out to close contacts.As of Monday, the county had attempted to contact 87% of known close contacts within 24 hours, well above the county’s goal of 70%.“I think we’re doing pretty well from the contact tracing perspective,” McDonald said of that metric.“I would say the general gestalt from talking to our contact tracers is that most individuals are actually quite cooperative and do give as best information as they can about close contacts. And we really do appreciate that,” he added.McDonald said that staff would reexamine the county’s database in light of the inquiry by ABC 10News, and on Tuesday a spokeswoman provided an update. “Approximately 60 percent of our cases identify one or more close contacts,” said communications officer Sarah Sweeney.Assuming that every person who tests positive has at least one close contact, it means San Diego County disease detectives are placing calls to -- at most -- 52% of close contacts within the first 24 hours.McDonald said while that tracers do not get close contact information from everyone, there are circumstances when a close contact is simply a household member and has no other unique close contacts to follow up on.“Some close contacts don’t need to be identifying any other close contacts,” he said. “Overall, I would say that our cooperation is good to excellent.”From May 4 to May 28, people who tested positive in the county identified an average of 2.2 close contacts, County Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten said at a Board of Supervisors meeting earlier this month.Whether tracers actually reach those individuals is another story.“I’m a person who thinks it would be great to have perfection: every single person telling us every single thing that they know. But I think that we are doing very well from the information we are getting from our close contact investigations,” McDonald said Tuesday. 4089

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Roughly 24 hours after stepping foot on Hawaiian soil, San Diego mother Christina Adele said that she and her family flew back home from vacation once Hawaiian state health officials had them quarantine after not accepting their negative test results.“I was in tears,” she told ABC10 News. She said that before the trip she checked Hawaii's entry checklist which requires a negative nucleic acid amplification test performed by a trusted partner, including CVS Pharmacy. She said that she and her family went to a CVS in Poway to get tested, which is where she said that she clarified with CVS staff that their testing would be adequate. “I said, ‘We're going to Hawaii. We need to make sure this is not an antigen or antibody test,’ and they assured me it wasn't,” she added.The family’s excitement quickly faded after their plane touched down in Hawaii. Adele said that Hawaiian health officials did not accept their tests and said that her family was instructed to quarantine for 14 days in their room at their resort.“[The resort staff said] if we see you out at all we're going to call the Hawaiian Police Department and you will go to jail,” she told ABC10 News. “I didn't pack much of anything for my son. I had some diapers and some things but I was thinking I was going to buy all that stuff in Hawaii.”She said her family couldn’t handle the quarantine so they flew back home the next day.“[I got] an email saying that [Hawaiian health officials] reread our COVID tests and they actually are valid and we could be immediately released from quarantine," she said a day after returning home.Part of the email reads: "Aloha, your COVID test has been read and you have been released from quarantine."“The whole ridiculous part is we had the negative COVID tests from the trusted partner,” she added.State health officials in Hawaii emailed the following to ABC10 News: 1901
