COLUSA COUNTY, Calif. (KGTV) -- California Highway Patrol is investigating after someone reportedly shot at a Pacific Gas and Electric worker Wednesday. According to CHP, the worker was traveling in a parked PG&E pick-up truck on I-5 south of Lenahan Road in Colusa County when the passenger side window shattered. At the time, the driver was unsure why the window shattered, but an investigation by CHP determined that a bullet hit the truck. CHP says another vehicle was traveling near the PG&E truck at the time of the incident, but details on the vehicle or driver are unclear at this time. The PG&E worker was uninjured. 646

Community colleges across the country have been an essential part of higher education. During the pandemic, many are seeing a decline in enrollment as issues like child care and internet access affect students."It's an issue. We did a survey in the spring semester of our students and about 24% of our students said they either had no WiFi access or it was spotty and that’s a quarter of our students," said Rebecca Ashford, President of Chattanooga State Community College. Dr. Ashford says their school enrollment is down by 7%. Chattanooga State Community College even started a technology pantry, similar to a food pantry but instead of food it offers donated laptops and other technology materials to help equip students with online learning."I think the uncertainty of the whole world and situation that we’re in, the demands of family, uncertainty about jobs and the lack of technology access - or just the fear of it because a lot of students are fearful of taking online classes. I think it's just the perfect storm," said Dr. Ashford."A lot of our students are concerned about what should they do. Should I go back to school? Should I stay in school? There's a lot of concerns, [students who] need to go out and make money, maybe someone in their family has lost a job," said Dr. Carole Goldsmith, President of Fresno City College in California. Fresno City College is reporting a 15% decline in enrollment. Like Chattanooga State Community College, Fresno City College students aren't able to take a number of classes that require in-person learning. Classes like welding, science labs and more."Our performing arts. We have a very large theatrical program; dance, song, music and all of those programs we’re not able to bring them back face-to-face so a lot of them unfortunately are dropping out," said Dr. Goldsmith. Dr. Goldsmith says, at the same time, they're seeing some spikes in classes that many students use to transfer to a four-year university, like engineering and math. Students possibly finding it more economical to take the courses online at their local community college than spend the money on a virtual university tuition. "Some of those counts that we’re seeing increase in some of the general education transfer courses is really quite telling and I think as we move forward it may change how we do business for many years to come," said Dr. Goldsmith.The community college has also been loaning out laptops and WiFi hotspots to students who need them. At Chattanooga State, educators are hoping students who've been unable to continue classes know that the school is ready and here for them when they're able to come back. And that, in general, they don't fall too far behind. "We do know that students who take a gap year are, I think it's about 25% or so, less likely to complete a degree. And so, we’ve been really trying to get the message out about not taking a gap year and continuing your education," said Dr. Ashford. 2968

CLEVELAND, Ohio - A local Tuskegee Airman who served in World War II was honored and celebrated in a special way on Thursday.Asa Newman who was part of the Tuskegee Airmen— the first African American unit to fly combat airplanes in World War II—recently turned 102 years old.To celebrate this American hero, community members lined the street as law enforcement honked their horns and a crowd waved across the street to Newman.The Aurora Post of the American Legion was there to honor Newman who was surrounded by family and friends.Newman grew up in Cleveland and attended East Cleveland High School. After World War II, he moved to Chicago and attended college at Roosevelt University. He was one of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters. COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Coronavirus has been on everyone's mind this year, and it can be difficult to avoid the topic. However, there is also shame associated with a positive test result. KOAA spoke with Jessica Rodriguez when she was with her children at a local park on Tuesday. She explained how she would feel if diagnosed with coronavirus. "I think it's a little bit of a shame thing... I'd hope I didn't get anybody sick. It'd almost be embarrassing," said Rodriguez, who has lived in Colorado Springs for almost two decades. Another person at the park, Sheila Martin, told KOAA she would not feel ashamed if she got the virus, and encouraged people to tell their close contacts if they experience symptoms. "Try to stop the spread, and then eventually, we'll get there," said Martin.Jonathan Baer was also at the park on Tuesday, and said he would not be afraid to talk about test results, and told people to stop their irrational fear of the virus. "I understand that it's real, it has the potential to be very serious, but that doesn't change my thoughts on it... There's been a tremendous fear campaign for the American public," said Baer, who said the media has helped spread that fear. The Clinical Program Manager of Child and Family Services for AspenPointe, Heather Lea, said fear related to the virus and confusion on best practices for safety protocols both contribute to increased anxiety about a positive test. "If I tell somebody that I had COVID, or that I have COVID, automatically, you know, the judgment pieces can come into play. There are embarrassment factors that can come into play for people too, about feeling like maybe there was something I could have done that I didn't, although that's often not really the case for most people," said Lea. Lea discussed how the virus has different layers of guilt associated with it, and said telling close contacts can help relieve some of it. "Regardless of how anxiety-provoking this is, how nervous you are, you are doing the right thing... I would rather get it over and done with, almost like ripping off the band-aid, instead of carrying that around with me forever," said Lea. Lea described it like walking a tightrope when trying to decide who to tell when symptoms first surface, but before a positive test result has actually been received. "It's hard to say. I personally carry that responsibility and would want people to know, as quickly as possible, if I'm waiting days to receive a test," said Lea. She also said any feelings the person who is learning of potential exposure is experiencing are valid, but it's important to move through stages of anger and decide upon the next steps. "This is how stigmas get attached to things, and when we stigmatize things, people don't get help. And they only spend time suffering and hurting when they don't need to be... This is not something you should have to do alone," said Lea. KOAA also reached out to El Paso County Public Health, which provided us with these responses to certain questions:What should I do if I am notified that I tested positive for COVID-19?Public Health is here as a resource to help guide you through this process. As soon as Public Health receives the notification of a positive case (typically these are received through lab reports), we will reach out to let the individual know, and answer any questions. Public Health can work with you to talk about the next steps and to help identify who you might have been in contact with. You can also call (719) 578-3220 to speak to a communicable disease epidemiologist. It’s important to follow the guidance of Public Health. If you test positive, you should isolate at home for at least 10 days since symptoms first appeared AND until no fever for at least 24 hours without medication AND symptoms are improving.Should I notify my friends and family?With COVID-19, we are looking for anyone who may have had prolonged exposure to you – anyone who may have been within six feet or less, for a period of 10-15 minutes or longer. Any household contacts should quarantine for a period of 14 days, and seek testing if they begin experiencing symptoms. Again, when Public Health reaches out, our trained experts will talk through this process with you and help identify who you may have been in prolonged contact with.Here are examples of some of the things we may talk through: Did you go to work while you were ill? Did you attend a social gathering recently? Were you in your prolonged contact with anyone? Did you have long conversations with anyone while standing less than six feet apart? Were you and other people wearing masks? If you may have had prolonged contact with other friends or social contacts, you may want to let them know out of an abundance of caution. Public Health can also work with you throughout this process to identify whether or not additional contacts need to be notified.What if I get a test and am awaiting my results – should I notify the people I’ve been in contact with?One of the things you can do while you’re awaiting test results is to make sure you’re staying home, to prevent spreading illness. Again, it can be helpful to think through who you may have had prolonged contact with; you may want to let close contacts know that you are experiencing symptoms and awaiting test results. CINCINNATI, Ohio — An Ohio man who falsely claimed in 2019 to be a long-missing boy received a mandatory two-year federal prison sentence on Tuesday after pleading guilty to aggravated identity theft.U.S. District Court Judge Michael Barrett gave Brian Rini, 25, credit for time served in jail, where Rini has been detained for nearly 21 months. That means Rini will be released from prison in about three and a half months.In April 2019, Rini told federal agents he was Timmothy Pitzen, an Aurora, Illinois, boy who disappeared at age 6 in 2011.Rini claimed he was also a sex trafficking victim who escaped from his captors.His lies prompted a massive federal, state and local investigation and raised the hopes of the Pitzen family, only to see them crushed again when the FBI soon exposed Rini's lie."I just want to say I'm sorry for what I've done and that I wish that I could just take it back," Rini said during a video hearing in Cincinnati. "I'm sorry for the family."Rini has twice before made bogus claims about being a juvenile sex trafficking victim and only admitted to the hoax this time after being confronted with the results of a DNA test, according to the FBI."He can't keep doing this. This is no way to live his own life and he really needs to think of the people that he hurts when he does this," said Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Healey, who prosecuted the case.Healey said Rini's lies prompted a major criminal investigation that pulled important law enforcement resources away from other cases, and caused "an enormous amount of unnecessary pain to the victim's family.""He needs to understand that when he tells lies like this it does cause damage.
