Fashion designer Hubert de Givenchy, a pioneer in high-end ready-to-wear clothing and famous for styling Audrey Hepburn's little black dress in "Breakfast at Tiffany's," has died at the age of 91, the House of Givenchy confirmed on Monday via its official Twitter account."The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. ENCINITAS, Calif. (KGTV) - Police are investigating an elaborate phone scam that cost an Encinitas woman ,400.Lauren Kennedy says she was driving to work Wednesday morning when she received a phone call around 8:30 a.m. She says she had just gotten off the phone with her mother when all of a sudden she was calling her back.But when she answered, it wasn’t her mother’s voice.“It was a man’s voice telling me he had abducted my mother and he was going to kill her if I didn't do exactly as he told me,” Kennedy said.Kennedy said it became so real when she heard her mother’s voice on the other line.“At that point, that’s when I knew it was real," she said. "I heard her in the background, and I thought for sure that they had taken her.”The man on the other line directed her to go to the nearest grocery store and put money into Money Pak cards. Then they demanded the card numbers over the phone and ordered her to destroy the cards afterward.They told her to cut up the cards and email them photo evidence that they had been destroyed.“At that time he hung up and never called me back,” she explained. “So within a minute or two, I called my mom’s phone and at that time, she answered.”That’s when Kennedy’s realized she had fallen victim to an elaborate phone scam.The Sheriff’s Department says the scammers used a “spoofing device” to make it look like the phone was made from her mother’s phone number.The scammers also called Kennedy’s’ mother in the middle of the fake ransom call. They got her worked up by saying they had her daughter.“They just wanted her to be scared and sound scared. All I heard was her saying my name. I still can't believe it," Kennedy said. “I think their whole intention with calling her was to have her voice in the background while they were asking me to do whatever they wanted me to do." Kennedy says she not sure how the scammers got her information or her mother’s. She says she is always careful with her information and weary of scams.“I don't answer phone calls I don't recognize,” she said. “I don't answer blocked numbers. I let people leave voicemails to determine if it’s legit or not. I feel like the public needs to know about this (scam) because if I can fall for this, anybody can fall for this.”In an email, to 10News the Sheriff’s Department says people should hang up when they get phone calls like this and should immediately call law enforcement.Kennedy says that's what her mother did when she go the call, but for her  - it’s easier said than done.“This was life or death," she said. ESCONDIDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Escondido Union High School District is celebrating a grant renewal of over million to go towards helping students.The ASSETs grant comes from the federal government and helps funds after-school programs and other support services for students and parents.The district has received this funding for the past 10 years and schools have put it to good use.San Pasqual High School has created unique clubs like ukulele, welding, robotics, and mountain biking. The money also funds academic tutoring as well as programs like Drivers Ed.Everything created through the ASSETs grant money is free for students. "I can tell you it has literally transformed the experience for hundreds of students, hundreds," said San Pasqual High School Principal Martin Casas.Up until last week, next year's grant money wasn't a sure thing. Casas says the district worried the money would be cut from the federal budget.ASSETs grant schools like San Pasqual were trying to figure out which programs they'd have to cut if the funding didn't come through. Casas estimates they would have had to cut half of their programs.But now that the funding is secured, schools can look forward to creating even more programs.They'll receive 0,000 each year for the next five years.Some new programs in the works include building skateboards, music production, and mariachi.In addition to San Pasqual High, Orange Glen, Escondido and Valley High Schools will be getting ASSETs funding.The district says over 75 percent of its students qualify for free and reduced lunch, so these programs are vital.  1618

(KGTV) — As San Diego County rolls back again into the more-restrictive purple tier, the city of Escondido is coming together to make sure their small businesses survive the newest rollback.In Escondido, Carol Rogers is involved with the Downtown Business Association and the Chamber of Commerce, plus she also owns Stone and Glass, a glass blowing shop. She said everyone has been feeling the impact for the past eight months, but they’re finding ways to adapt.For her glass store, she said online sales have been what kept her afloat.RELATED: San Diego County moves into California's COVID-19 purple tier, new state data shows“Our online sales are phenomenal. It’s what’s kept us in business. It is the only thing that’s kept us in business,” said Rogers.She said she and the organizations she works with have created different plans to help all small businesses. During the summer, they closed down a lane of traffic along the main street and added cement barricades, creating a space for stores to add tables to the sidewalks. Some types of businesses were able to use the space, but others were not.“What we found is the restaurants did it. I works for the restaurants, but retail is not using the space,” she said, discussing the outdoor sidewalk addition.In the spirit of unity, they decided to not waste the outdoor space, so Rogers created an art walk that happened Saturday, Nov. 14. Artists and creators were able to move into unused street space and host pop-up shops, giving them business that has been missing since their local Second Saturday stopped in March.In addition to the stores moving outside and artists popping up for a Saturday afternoon, the community has also stepped up to add life to the cement barricades that block off the outdoor sidewalk space. Starting in the summer, a few cement blocks were painted by artists, and that has continued. Now, Grand Avenue is lined with multi-colored pieces of art.“There’s been professional artists, there’s been people that just want to paint, there’s children,” said artist Tristan Pittard, who was working on his cement canvas Saturday.Pittard said the art is an additional motivator for people to visit the area and support local businesses.“Art in general affects peoples psyche and public art is important for that because people might not be exposed to art otherwise,” said Pittard.For Rogers, the combination of the art walk with the painted cement shows the unity of the people, and gives her hope that Escondido will survive another rollback. She said she hopes the art walk will become a monthly event.“The more that we can do this, we believe the more people will come. This makes people comfortable. We’re outside. We’re far apart. (KGTV) - A retired Escondido homeowner is figuring out how she'll pay for Thanksgiving dinner after everything she bought for the holiday was spoiled during a power outage.On a fixed income, Carol Marbrey purchased the meal at the beginning of the month.“I was never warned that my electric would be turned off, and then I was told it would be on by 7:30 AM, then I was told it would be on by noon, and this is all online, and then I was told it would five at night.”Marbrey came home that night to a dark house; power wasn't restored until the next day.The outage happened earlier this week during the extreme wind conditions and Red Flag Warning countywide.San Diego Gas & Electric says some customers weren't warned because it was a fluid situation, with weather conditions changing by the hour.  A spokesperson tells 10News after power is shut off, technicians must inspect hundreds of miles of lines before turning them back on.Marbrey says she called the company several times to understand the situation.“I was getting different answers as to why our electric was not going on," said Marbrey.An SDG&E spokesperson tells 10News they encountered an issue trying to re-energize Marbrey's circuit, by then it was getting dark, and they had to wait until the following day.Marbrey says she understands the necessity to keep the community safe but wishes she’d been better informed.She knows her situation could be a lot worse.“Our hearts really go out to those people that really suffered; we really respect the fire department, the electrical people that are on the ground, the maintenance people, everyone that's doing their best to keep us safe.”Marbrey estimates they lost 0 to 0 in spoiled food. Her efforts to get reimbursed by SDG&E have been unsuccessful so far.SDG&E says they generally don't reimburse spoiled food during an extreme weather situation, but that customers can still try and make a claim. 1967
