SEATTLE — If you’re eating seafood in the US, there is a good chance it came through Seattle. Data from 2017 show more than 150 million pounds of seafood worth nearly 0 million came through the city on the sound. But COVID-19 is changing everything.A new study published in the Journal of Fish and Fisheries found that seafood imports, exports, and catches were all down around 40% compared to 2019. A colossal decline.“We were scared, just like everybody. Not only with the health concerns and people getting sick, and then financially we just bought the business a couple years ago from our boss and it was pretty quiet, pretty sleepy down here," said Ryan Reese, one of the owners of Pike Place Fish Market. Just like everyone else, they’ve had to adjust during the pandemic.“We’ve converted our whole operation like a little shipping factory and so we’ve really changed our focus from over the counter service to trying really hard to drive our online presence,” said Reese. Ryan says they’ve been lucky to stay busy shipping fish out to customers.“People still need to eat everyday and they’re cooking at home and luckily they think of us and we ship overnight and so we’re feeling grateful,” said Reese. What we found is it’s kind of a mixed bag with the seafood industry; some companies are adapting really well and getting their product to people and other companies are really struggling and their sales are down from 10% to 40%. “You got to have your gear in perfect condition, it’s gotta be fishing for you, that’s what makes the money,” said Cub Jansen, fishing captain. Cub is doing some maintenance work on one of his boats. He and his crew had a tough season.“The biggest thing would be the price difference. You know, we’ve been hurting on price. Typically in Alaska, we’d get paid per pound for crab, but this year, we got paid .85 per pound. There’s no casinos buying, no cruise ships, there’s limited capacity at restaurants, so it’s made for a tough market,” said Jansen.When you have no place to sell your catch, that can crush an industry.“This year has really hurt our crews and our boat owners earnings,” said Bob Alverson, the manager of the Fishing Vessels Owner’s Association. He says his members are hurting.“The earnings for our crews and the boats are off about 30 to 40%,” said Alverson.There are two huge reasons. First, seafood is mostly sold in restaurants and COVID-19 restrictions have been hard on those businesses.“The restaurant trade is where we make our living a lot and I feel sorry for the waiters and waitresses’ businesses. They have really been hit hard. And anyone who depends on selling their product through the restaurant trade has been similarly hit,” said Alverson.Second, exports to Japan and China have essentially dried up since the pandemic.“We’ve lost our overseas markets to China, which buy the vast majority of our live crab,” said Jansen.That leaves this group of hardworking people with a lot of questions.“The biggest thing with the COVID stuff is, am I going to have a market tomorrow? Am I going to be able to sell this crab or salmon that I have on the boat? Or is everything going to shutdown?” said Jansen. Those are the type of questions that make you lose sleep at night.But it’s not the first time this industry has been hit hard, and it certainly won’t be the last. Maybe you wouldn’t know by looking at them, but fisherman tend to be ocean half full type of people.“In the fish business, everybody is an optimist. Next year can always be better than this year,” said Alverson.“There’s a lot of heritage and a lot of pride. It’s a hard working community,” said Reese. “We all need each other,” said Jansen. SANTEE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A broken water main damaged a Santee street and flooded at least one nearby business early Friday morning.At around 3:45 a.m., authorities were called to Prospect Avenue and Cuyamaca Street in response to a water coming out of the roadway.The water blasted out of the street and flooded an auto repair business. At least six vehicles were partially submerged due to the rising water.By 4:15 a.m., authorities were able to shut off the water and begin road repairs.A city official said they believe the overnight temperature change may have caused the water main break.ABC 10News learned repairs are expected to last throughout the day.The public is asked to avoid the area of Prospect Avenue and Cuyamaca Street, as lanes have been closed. 772

(KGTV) — Cameras caught a thief wreaking havoc at an East County business park, culminating in several destructive acts after he realized he was locked in.Scott Trafton has seen the video countless times, but his emotions have yet to lessen."Aggravating and makes me angry," said Trafton, who owns XP Builders.Just before midnight last Thursday night, a truck is seen driving into a business park on Wheatlands Court. The truck, believed to be a Chevy Silverado, is parked in the dark for more than four hours, before a man emerges and heads toward Trafton's general contractor business. In the video, the man grabs items from the truck bed, before prying open a toolbox in the back. A knife at this side, the man would get away with more than a thousand dollars with of Trafton's tools. "It hurts being a small business. Every penny counts," said Trafton.Trafton is not the only victim. The thief left behind a trail of shattered truck windows and missing items."Basically took whatever wasn't bolted down," said Trafton.When the man went to leave, he was met by a gate, locked by someone who had left earlier. The camera spies him apparently chaining his truck to the fence and pulling forward, but he can't get the fence down."He then came over to another truck and broke a window. He then took a moving blanket to protect his truck and drove to another fence," said Trafton.In the video, you can see the flash of his lights, before his final act."He ran into the fence, spread it wide open and knocked it over," said Trafton.The repair bill will tally some ,000. SAN ONOFRE (KGTV) -- Police chased a domestic violence suspect from Los Angeles County to San Diego County Thursday night. The driver, who has family in Tijuana, was believe to be heading to the border, according to our ABC affiliate in L.A.?At one point, the suspect may have ran over a spike strip, slowing him down. Once near the Camp Pendleton area police attempted two pit maneuvers. Shortly after the suspect drove off the freeway and into the brush, where he ultimately turned off the car and exited his vehicle. Police were able to take him into custody around 11:20 p.m. and began to search the vehicle. *This is a developing story. 10News will continue to update as more details unfold.  730

SAN FRANCISCO (KGTV) -- A boy who became well known after a photo of him hugging a police officer was widely shared on social media is feared dead along with his family after their SUV fell over a cliff, according to the Associated Press.Authorities say 15-year-old Devonte Hart is feared dead after the family’s vehicle fell 100 feet over a cliff along Highway 1 near County Road 430.Tha California Highway Patrol said 19-year-old Markis Hart, 14-year-old Jeremiah Hart and 14-year-old Abigail Hart died along with their parents, Jennifer and Sarah Hart. "We have every indication to believe that all six children were in there," Mendocino County Sheriff Tom Allmon said. "We know that an entire family vanished and perished during this tragedy."The California Highway Patrol hasn’t determined why the vehicle went over the cliff into the ocean.Devonte gained fame after a photo of him hugging a police officer went viral. In the photo (pictured below) a Portland officer reportedly saw him holding a “free hugs” sign and crying.
